How to use AAdvantage Systemwide Upgrades

AAdvantage Systemwide Upgrades are a type of flight upgrade offered by American Airlines to members of its AAdvantage frequent flyer programme, and they are governed by their own additional terms and conditions, which override the general AAdvantage terms wherever the two conflict. [6] The terms describe them as transferable and assignable, but not for sale or barter. [6]

Key takeaways

  • American Airlines treats systemwide upgrades as an upgrade type with their own additional terms and conditions, and those additional rules override the general AAdvantage terms if the two conflict. [6]
  • A systemwide upgrade is transferable and assignable, but it may not be sold or bartered, and it is void if it is sold, purchased or expired. [6]
  • Unless American Airlines permits otherwise, a member cannot combine an AAdvantage flight award with a systemwide upgrade. [6]
  • Travel upgraded with a systemwide upgrade earns AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points under the usual rules that applied before the upgrade, not for the cabin actually flown. [6]

What are AAdvantage Systemwide Upgrades?

American Airlines offers different types of flight upgrades that a member may be eligible to obtain, as determined by American Airlines from time to time. [6] The programme's terms name complimentary upgrades, Instant Upgrades and systemwide upgrades as separate categories, each with its own rules. [6] Complimentary upgrades may be available for ConciergeKey, AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum Pro, AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Gold members as American Airlines determines, and certain status members may receive a complimentary upgrade for one companion travelling on the same flight. [6] AAdvantage status tiers also list complimentary upgrades among their published benefits. [3]

Systemwide upgrades sit apart from the complimentary track because they are subject to their own additional terms and conditions, and where those additional rules and requirements conflict with the general AAdvantage terms, the additional rules take precedence for that upgrade. [6] In practice that means the conditions attached to systemwide upgrades, rather than the general upgrade language alone, set out how one may be used. [6]

How do you use a Systemwide Upgrade?

Begin with the reservation itself. To use any AAdvantage Rewards and Benefits, a member must include their AAdvantage number in the reservation record, and the information on the AAdvantage account — such as name, date of birth and address — must match the information in the reservation. [6] Travel connected with the AAdvantage programme, including travel in connection with systemwide upgrades, is subject to the tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms and re-accommodation policies of the carrier operating the flight; for flights operated by American Airlines that means the American Airlines Conditions of Carriage, and the Warsaw Convention or Montreal Convention may also apply. [6]

Systemwide upgrades are transferable and assignable, so a member can direct one to another person rather than only using it on their own travel. [6] They may not be sold or bartered, and a systemwide upgrade is void if it is sold, purchased or expired. [6]

One combination is closed off by default. Unless American Airlines permits it, members may not combine AAdvantage flight awards with systemwide upgrades. [6]

How do miles and Loyalty Points accrue when you use a Systemwide Upgrade?

An upgrade does not lift the earning rate. If travel is upgraded using complimentary upgrades, Instant Upgrades or systemwide upgrades, AAdvantage mileage and Loyalty Points accrue based on the usual rules prior to the upgrade, not on the upgraded class of service flown. [6] AAdvantage separates miles into Base Miles, which also earn Loyalty Points, and Bonus Miles, which do not. [6]

Exceptions and limits

  • Sale voids the upgrade. AAdvantage Rewards and Benefits are for a member's personal use through their own AAdvantage account and cannot be sold, advertised for sale or bartered or used by anyone else except as American Airlines expressly permits, and systemwide upgrades are void if sold, purchased or expired. [6]
  • The upgrade's own terms win. Where the additional rules and requirements for systemwide upgrades conflict with the general AAdvantage terms, the additional rules and requirements override those general terms. [6]
  • Award tickets stay separate. Unless American Airlines otherwise permits, a flight award booking cannot be combined with a systemwide upgrade. [6]
  • Closing an account does not cancel an issued upgrade. If a member voluntarily terminates their AAdvantage account, American Airlines will honour upgrades already issued at the time of termination, but those upgrades cannot be modified or transferred. [6]
  • Irregular operations. Where a cancellation or irregular operation requires the passenger to be reseated or rebooked, American Airlines will attempt to honour the upgrade on another flight operated by American Airlines or one of its regional carriers; if the passenger is accommodated on another carrier, they will be given travel options that include travelling in the class of service purchased on the American Airlines ticket. [6]
  • Rules can change. American Airlines may modify its fare rules, fare classes, upgrade rules and ancillaries, may withdraw, limit, modify or cancel any AAdvantage Rewards and Benefits, and the accumulation of those rewards does not entitle a member to vested rights in them. [6]

Frequently asked questions

Can I give my Systemwide Upgrade to someone else?

Yes. Systemwide upgrades are transferable and assignable, but they may not be sold or bartered, and an upgrade is void if it is sold or purchased. [6]

Can I use a Systemwide Upgrade on an AAdvantage award ticket?

Not unless American Airlines permits it, because members may not combine AAdvantage flight awards with systemwide upgrades. [6]

Do I earn miles for the upgraded cabin?

No. AAdvantage mileage and Loyalty Points accrue on the usual rules that applied before the upgrade, not on the upgraded class of service flown. [6]

What happens to my upgrade if my flight is cancelled?

American Airlines will attempt to honour the upgrade on another flight it operates or one operated by a regional carrier; if you are accommodated on another carrier, your options include travelling in the class of service you purchased. [6]

What happens to an issued upgrade if I close my account?

If you voluntarily terminate your AAdvantage account, upgrades already issued at that time will be honoured, but they cannot be modified or transferred. [6]
