Status match vs status challenge: what's the difference?

Status match vs status challenge is the choice between two ways an airline can carry your elite tier across from a rival frequent flyer programme: a match converts status you already hold into a comparable tier on proof of that status, while a challenge makes the tier conditional on hitting earning targets before a deadline. Delta Air Lines SkyMiles, United Airlines MileagePlus and American Airlines AAdvantage all run versions that do both — a short complimentary period first, then an earning window that decides whether the tier stays. Key takeaways

  • A match is proof-based and a challenge is activity-based; the three programmes compared here combine the two by granting a short block of complimentary status and then requiring earning activity to extend it. [4] [5] [6]
  • Delta gives 90 days of complimentary Medallion status and asks for Medallion Qualification Dollars earned on Delta flights to extend it [4]; United gives 120 days from an activating flight and asks for Premier qualifying flights plus Premier qualifying points [5]; American gives 4 months and asks for a Loyalty Point goal every 4 months [6].
  • All three require status earned under another airline's published rules, and all three exclude trial, temporary or promotional status. [4] [5] [6]

How does a status match differ from a status challenge?

The rules below come from Delta's 2026 Medallion Status Match Challenge terms, last updated 1 January 2026 [4]; United's 2026 MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge, open to applications submitted between 8 January and 21 December 2026 [5]; and American's limited-time Instant Status Pass promotion, which American may change or end at any time without notice [6].

At Delta, the match part does the heavy lifting: an approved member is matched to Platinum, Gold or Silver Medallion Status based on current elite status with another airline, and that complimentary status lasts 90 days. [4] The challenge part is the extension, which requires earning Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) during the three-month period, from Delta flights, and flying at least one Delta-marketed flight in the same period, excluding Main Basic fares. [4]

United inverts the order slightly: approval alone does not start the clock. A member must first take an activating flight operated by United or United Express, either within 90 days of confirmed approval or within the previous 30 days if that is indicated at the time of application, and the 120-day complimentary Premier period then runs from that flight. [5] Keeping the status for the rest of the programme year requires earning both Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier qualifying points (PQP) inside the challenge period. [5]

American frames the same structure as a ladder: matched status runs for 4 months, a Loyalty Point goal every 4 months moves the member to the next phase, and once all three goals are met the member qualifies for status for the rest of the membership year. [6]

What proof and deadlines do the programmes require?

Delta asks for two pieces of evidence: a valid, current elite membership card or credential in the member's name, and a statement showing the earned elite status together with the activity that produced it. Photos, app screenshots or other files are accepted as long as the status level and name are clear. [4] The member must also have held a SkyMiles account for at least 30 days before enrolling and must have flown at least one Delta-marketed flight above Main Basic within the previous three years. [4] Delta allows up to 15 business days for review. [4]

United asks applicants to complete a request form and upload proof of current airline status, and says approval takes up to 14 business days; United also reserves the right to request supplemental documentation. [5] American accepts four programmes only — Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus, JetBlue TrueBlue and Southwest Rapid Rewards — with screenshot requirements that differ by programme, and asks for at least four weeks to review. [6]

United MileagePlusName, Premier Activity Previous Year and Premier Activity Year to Date, and the current membership card with its expiration date [6]

What activity keeps the matched status?

Complimentary period and what extends it
ProgrammeComplimentary periodWhat extends it
Delta SkyMiles90 days, beginning within 24 hours of the enrollment confirmation email [4]MQDs earned on Delta flights during the three-month period, plus one Delta-marketed flight [4]
United MileagePlus120 days from the activating flight [5]PQF and PQP earned within the challenge period [5]
American AAdvantage4 months [6]A Loyalty Point goal every 4 months, three goals in total [6]

Delta's extension targets are $1,250 MQDs for Silver, $2,500 for Gold and $3,750 for Platinum, and MQDs awarded through MQD Headstart do not count toward them. [4] American's first-phase goals are at least 13,000 Loyalty Points to continue AAdvantage Gold benefits, 25,000 for Platinum, 42,000 for Platinum Pro and 67,000 for Executive Platinum. [6] United says the number of PQF and PQP depends on the matched level and is set out in the programme details. [5] Outside the challenge, United's published 2026 thresholds run from 15 PQF and 5,000 PQP for Premier Silver to 60 PQF and 22,000 PQP for Premier 1K, with at least four paid flight segments on United or United Express, and reaching a published threshold remains a route to a higher tier during the offer. [5] [7]

Exceptions and limits

  • Ceilings. Delta's match covers only Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion, not Diamond, and a member can extend only the tier originally matched or a lower one. [4] United does not allow members to qualify for a higher Premier level than the one matched through the offer, except by reaching published thresholds. [5]
  • Benefits during the trial. Delta issues no physical credentials during or after the complimentary period, and matched Platinum members cannot select Choice Benefits unless they meet the extension requirements. [4] United issues no Premier membership materials during the challenge period and warns that access to some reciprocal partner benefits, including Star Alliance lounges, may not be available. [5]
  • What counts as flying. United counts only flights operated by United or United Express, not United-marketed codeshares operated by other carriers, and Basic Economy and base fare tickets earn PQP but not PQF. [5]
  • Repeat participation. Delta allows enrolment once every three years and excludes members enrolled since 1 January 2023 in a Status Match Challenge, Reclaim My Status or Corporate accelerated Medallion Status offer [4]; United excludes anyone in its Status Match programme within the last three years or with a Premier Status Exception in the last five [5]; American excludes anyone registered for Instant Status Pass in the last two years, and anyone already holding equivalent or higher AAdvantage status [6].
  • Lifetime status. United treats status earned through published criteria or lifetime status awards as eligible [5], while American excludes matched, transferred, lifetime and promotional status holders [6].
  • Discretion and validity. Delta sets eligibility at its sole discretion and matched status expires after 90 days unless extended [4]; American may deny any submission and warns that forged documentation may end the AAdvantage account [6]. Delta members who enrol between 1 January and 31 December 2026 and complete the challenge receive status through 31 January 2028 [4]; United status earned in 2026 is valid through January 2028, and status earned through the offer on or after 1 January 2027 through January 2029 [5]; American matches Delta status with a January 2028 expiration and United status with a January 2027 or 2028 expiration [6].

How long does approval take?

Delta allows up to 15 business days [4], United says it will reply within 14 business days [5], and American asks for at least four weeks [6].
