Start here: KrisFlyer — earning, spending and Elite status
KrisFlyer is the frequent flyer programme of Singapore Airlines, in which KrisFlyer miles are the base unit of measurement, earned on eligible flights and partner transactions and spent on award tickets, upgrades and other rewards [5]. Membership is free to join [4].
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- The course runs in six steps: the programme itself, joining, earning, spending, status, and a first award booking.
- Miles are earned on eligible Singapore Airlines, Scoot and partner flights and through ground partners, while Elite miles are a separate counter used only for status [5].
- The thresholds are 25,000 Elite miles within 12 consecutive months for Elite Silver and 50,000 for Elite Gold [3] [6].
- Singapore Airlines may change partners, earning and redemption rules and tier criteria without prior notice, so confirm details against the current terms before relying on them [5].
Steps 1–2: what it is and how to join
The terms describe KrisFlyer as part of a loyalty programme whose objective is to promote the purchase of goods or use of services provided by Singapore Airlines or its partners, and they list award tickets, redemption tickets, upgrades, PPS Value, PPS Rewards and KrisFlyer Milestone Rewards among its features [5]. Miles may not be exchanged for cash or vouchers [5]. A separate PPS Club structure sits alongside KrisFlyer: PPS Value is earned only on eligible Suites, First and Business Class flights and cannot be earned in Premium Economy or Economy [5].
Joining is free [4], and the membership enrolment fee is waived until further notice [5]. Membership is open to individuals aged two or above, with parental or legal guardian consent required for ages 2 to 16, and corporations or other legal entities cannot join [5]. Only one account per member is allowed: joint accounts and pooling are not permitted, and the email address given at enrolment must be personal and must not already be registered with Singapore Airlines [5]. After enrolment, the digital membership card can be downloaded through the SingaporeAir mobile app and must be shown when travelling on Singapore Airlines or Scoot or when transacting with partners [5].
Step 3: how earning works
Members quote their membership number at reservation and present the card when using Singapore Airlines or partner services, and only certain partner transactions are eligible [5]. On Singapore Airlines, miles are awarded in Suites, First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy on participating airlines including Scoot, calculated from the great circle distance travelled plus any booking class bonus [5]. Accrual ranges from 200% of actual miles travelled in Suites and First Class (booking classes A and F) and 150% in Business Class (Z, C, J) down to 50% in Economy booking classes Q, N, V, K and G [5] [6].
Nothing is earned on industry or agency discount tickets, award or redemption tickets, infant fares and other special discounted fares, or charter flights, and no miles are awarded on flights marketed by Singapore Airlines but operated by non-KrisFlyer partner airlines [5]. Scoot-only itineraries booked on FlyScoot.com or the Scoot app earn on the fare value paid, excluding taxes [5], and on tickets part-paid with miles, miles are earned in proportion to the cash paid, excluding items such as airport taxes [5].
On the ground, points from participating credit and charge cards convert at each partner's rate, co-branded card miles are deposited monthly, hotel stays and car rentals earn per qualifying stay or rental, and other partners are governed by their own terms [5]. From 1 September 2025, eligible spend with Kris+, KrisShop and Pelago also earns 1 Elite mile per Singapore dollar, subject to exclusions [5] [6].
Allow two weeks for Singapore Airlines flights and four weeks for partner airline flights before claiming missing miles, and claims are accepted within six months of the transaction date [5]. Account discrepancies should be raised within three months, because Singapore Airlines is not obliged to correct under-crediting reported later, and members may credit only one programme per flight [5].
Step 4: how to use miles
Miles can be used for award tickets, upgrade awards and redemption tickets on Singapore Airlines, Star Alliance and other partner airlines, and for part or all of the airfare, airport taxes and selected ancillaries bought on singaporeair.com [5]. The terms also cover Economy awards on selected Scoot flights, items on krisshop.com, hotel and car rental bookings on krisflyervrooms.com with a minimum of 1,500 miles per transaction, conversion to partner programme points, conversion to KrisPay miles, partner vouchers and service fees [5]. A member may redeem for their own airfare or for any of up to five redemption nominees [5].
Miles cannot pay for tickets bought through travel agents, Singapore Airlines ticket offices or call centres, nor for corporate fares, group fares, or any fare that includes a segment not operated by Singapore Airlines, such as codeshares, interline and round-the-world itineraries [5]. Tickets redeemed fully or partly with miles are non-endorsable whatever the fare conditions [5]. Minimum miles per redemption and the rate at which miles offset spend are published on singaporeair.com and can change, with the rate at the time of ticket issuance applying [5]. The terms also list the extension of expiring KrisFlyer miles among the service fees that can be redeemed with miles [5].
Steps 5–6: status and a first award booking
Status uses Elite miles, a separate counter that cannot be spent on awards or airfares [5]. Elite Silver requires 25,000 Elite miles within 12 consecutive months and Elite Gold requires 50,000, each membership lasts 12 months, and it is renewed by earning the same threshold again during the membership period [3] [6]. Upgrades can take up to one day, and Elite miles earned before the upgrade do not count towards the next renewal [3] [6]. Elite miles reset to zero at the end of the member's individual Elite membership year, a period of 12 consecutive months from the upgrade or renewal date [5]. Non-flight Elite miles count towards no more than 20% of the requirement, capped at 5,000 for Elite Silver and 10,000 for Elite Gold, and tier or promotional bonuses never count [5] [6].
Elite Silver brings a 25% bonus on KrisFlyer miles, discounted service fees and priority reservation waitlisting [3], plus standard seat selection in Singapore Airlines Economy, priority check-in and boarding, and extra baggage allowance [4]. Elite Gold adds access to more than 1,000 lounges worldwide, priority check-in and extra baggage [3], including Star Alliance and KrisFlyer Gold lounges, priority baggage handling, forward-cabin seat selection in Economy and a waiver of the first date or time change fee on each Scoot booking [4].
For a first award booking, start with an itinerary the terms allow: flights operated by Singapore Airlines, booked on singaporeair.com rather than through an agent or ticket office [5]. Decide whether the miles cover the member or one of the five redemption nominees, and check the published minimum miles and rate, which applies as at ticket issuance [5]. Partner awards depend on the partner's continued participation in KrisFlyer [5]. For flight award tickets, the terms publish no refund window; what they do state is that tickets redeemed fully or partly with miles are non-endorsable whatever the fare conditions, and that no miles are refunded if the miles redemption rate changes after the ticket is issued [5]. A different product carries the refund timing and fee rules set out in the terms: for hotel-stay and car-rental bookings made on krisflyervrooms.com, cancellations follow the booking's own conditions, mile refunds can take six to eight weeks, miles that expired before cancellation are not refunded, and any cancellation fee is charged in the same cash-and-miles proportion as the booking [5].
Exceptions and limits
- Rule changes. Singapore Airlines may modify partners, rules for earning or using miles, qualification and renewal criteria, award structure and availability, redemption levels and promotions at its discretion without prior notice, and continued participation counts as acceptance of the current terms [5].
- Inactive accounts. An account with no recorded activity for 45 consecutive months, or for 24 months from the date membership began, may be closed without prior notice, where recorded activity means a transaction in which the member earns KrisFlyer miles [5].
- Personal use. Membership cannot be transferred, sold or bartered, misuse can lead to suspension or termination, and termination or permanent exclusion forfeits miles, status credits and rewards without compensation [5]. Miles cannot move between members except from a minor's account to a linked parent or guardian account, subject to linking requirements and fees [5].
- The terms direct members to singaporeair.com for current minimum miles and conversion rates [5].
