FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a qualifying stay?

A qualifying stay is a hotel stay that meets a loyalty programme's conditions on the rate booked, the booking channel and the property, and therefore counts toward elite status or a promotion. [1] A paid night is not automatically a qualifying stay: the same room at the same hotel may count or may not, depending on how the reservation was made, who is registered and who pays. [1]

Key takeaways

  • A qualifying stay is the unit hotel programmes use to decide which nights count toward status; in Marriott Bonvoy, an Elite Night Credit is earned only on a night during a Qualifying Stay. [1]
  • The conditions attach to the property, the rate and charges on the member's folio, the membership number on the booking, the registered guest and the payer. [1]
  • Completing a Qualifying Stay also counts as Qualifying Activity, which Marriott Bonvoy members need at least once every 24 months to keep accumulated points, awards and other benefits. [1]

What makes a hotel stay count as a qualifying stay?

In general terms, a stay qualifies when three things line up: the property takes part in the programme, the rate and charges are ones the programme recognises, and the booking can be matched back to the member's account. Programme rules then set the exact tests, which is why an identical reservation can count in one programme and mean nothing in another.

The property. Marriott Bonvoy places earning at Participating Properties and publishes the brands that take part, from Courtyard, Four Points and Aloft to The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis and W Hotels. [1] Branded Residences are treated differently: a guest stay at a residence earns no points, miles, Elite Night Credit or programme benefits unless that residence is expressly listed as participating. [1]

The rate and the folio. Marriott Bonvoy describes Qualifying Charges as charges a member incurs during a stay in a guest room at a Participating Property, on their own folio, beginning with Qualifying Rates for Stays; food and beverage (excluding alcoholic beverages or tobacco where prohibited by law), direct-dial in-room telephone and fax, and in-room movies and video games can also qualify. [1] Charges at food and beverage outlets managed or operated by a third party may be ineligible. [1]

The member on the booking. The member must give their membership number at the time of reservation or at check-in, must stay in one of the reserved rooms as the registered guest, and must pay the charges. [1] Up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates can be included. [1]

All-inclusive properties run through a package rather than a room rate: Qualifying Charges there cover the all-inclusive package, premium food and beverage bought on top of the Qualifying Rate, extra-person charges on paid stays, spa, golf and other resort-run activities managed by the property, and taxes, service charges and gratuities that form part of the qualifying room package rate. [1]

How do qualifying stays count toward elite status?

A qualifying stay is the container; the night is the unit that counts. Marriott Bonvoy awards an Elite Night Credit only for a night inside a Qualifying Stay, and calls that night a Qualifying Night. [1] The stay itself is defined in section 2.1.d of the programme rules, and Elite Night Credits are what count toward Elite Status and Lifetime Elite Status. [1]

Status is not the only thing a qualifying stay affects. Marriott Bonvoy lists completing a Qualifying Stay among the Qualifying Activity that keeps an account in good standing: members need Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to retain accumulated points, awards and other benefits, and an account with no Qualifying Activity for 24 consecutive months forfeits them without reinstatement. [1] Gifting, transferring or receiving points from another member does not count as Qualifying Activity. [1] An account left inactive for five consecutive years may be deactivated. [1]

The record is not final until the programme says it is: Marriott may monitor accounts and transaction history for compliance, including points, Qualifying Stays and Qualifying Nights, and may correct, adjust, cancel or reconcile them where a benefit was issued in error, a member was not eligible or fraud is suspected. [1]

Do booking channels and property changes affect a qualifying stay?

Booking channel can decide the answer on its own. At Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas, Marriott Bonvoy members earn points or miles on the room rate only, and points are neither earned nor redeemed for reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com. [1]

Property changes work the same way. If a Participating Property exits the programme, members will not earn Qualifying Nights for Elite Status for stays there, even where the reservation was made before the exit date. [1]

Some properties take part in a limited or unique capacity under supplementary terms: Design Hotels participation is limited and subject to specific earning, redemption and benefit rules, MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy hotels are governed by their own terms of service, and Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy sits under separate terms. [1]

What if a qualifying stay is missing from your account?

Missing credit can be requested for points, miles, Qualifying Nights, Qualifying Stays, Qualifying Events and other Qualifying Charges through Marriott channels or Member Support, subject to timing, documentation and property-specific requirements. [1] Unless the rules or supplemental terms state otherwise, the request must be received within one year of the activity. [1]

New members get a narrow extra window: eligible activity completed in the 30 days before enrolment can be credited if requested within one year, while earlier Qualifying Activity and charges at participating outlets without a stay are not eligible. [1] The missing stay credit checklist walks through what to collect before asking.

When does a stay stop counting as qualifying?

  • Redemptions and complimentary charges. Marriott Bonvoy's list of charges that do not qualify for points includes complimentary services and award redemptions. [1] Free Night Awards, Cash + Points rates, PointSavers rates and Nightly Upgrade Awards are published as separate products with their own terms and conditions. [5]
  • Outlets outside the property. Charges from third-party-operated food and beverage outlets may be ineligible, and charges at outlets not located within the property are not Qualifying Charges. [1]
  • Non-participating properties. The rules list properties outside the programme, including Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, Grand Residences by Marriott in Mayfair, London, the Rotary House Hotel at Marriott Conference Centers in Houston, and The Marriott Ranch Bed and Breakfast. [1]
  • Residences that do participate. Three branded residences are expressly named as participating: Marriott Residences Salgados Resort in the Algarve, The Phoenician Residences in Scottsdale and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach. [1]
  • All-inclusive boundaries. At all-inclusive properties, charges at outlets that are not located within the property fall outside Qualifying Charges. [1]

Frequently asked questions

Is a paid night automatically a qualifying stay?

No. In Marriott Bonvoy the night has to sit inside a stay that satisfies the programme's conditions: a Participating Property, charges on the member's folio that include a Qualifying Rate for the stay, the membership number on the booking, and the member registered as the guest and paying. [1]

How are award nights and redemption rates treated?

Marriott Bonvoy places award redemptions and complimentary services among charges that do not qualify for points, and ties Elite Night Credit to nights inside a Qualifying Stay. [1] Free Night Awards, Cash + Points rates, PointSavers rates and Nightly Upgrade Awards carry their own terms. [5]

Do nights still count if the hotel leaves the programme?

No. When a Participating Property exits Marriott Bonvoy, members will not earn Qualifying Nights for Elite Status for stays there, even if the booking was made before the exit date. [1]

Can one member earn on more than one room?

The Marriott Bonvoy rules allow up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates to be added to the member's Qualifying Charges. [1] Elite Night Credit attaches to nights in a Qualifying Stay, which the rules define separately. [1]

How long do you have to claim a missing qualifying stay?

Missing-credit requests must be received within one year of the applicable activity unless the rules or supplemental terms say otherwise. [1]
