FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What are elite-qualifying nights?

Elite-qualifying nights are the nights of hotel stays that a hotel loyalty programme counts towards its elite status tiers, as distinct from nights that are simply booked or paid for. Marriott Bonvoy names the unit an Elite Night Credit and says it is earned only on a night during a Qualifying Stay [1], while Hilton Honors qualifies members for Elite Tier Status on Stays, nights or Eligible Spend in a calendar year [2].

Key takeaways

  • Elite status progress is counted in nights, and the two programmes here describe the unit differently: Marriott Bonvoy awards an Elite Night Credit only on a night during a Qualifying Stay [1], while Hilton Honors defines a night as a night that is part of a qualifying Stay [2].
  • Nights count towards status partly because of the rate and booking channel used: Hilton Honors defines a Stay to exclude a named list of rates and channels, and awards no Stay or night credit for a no-show [2].
  • Room count is treated differently: Hilton Honors gives Stay and night credit for one room only for Elite Tier Status purposes [2], and Marriott Bonvoy states its extra-room allowance inside the definition of Qualifying Charges rather than inside the night credit [1].

What the night count is used for

At Marriott Bonvoy, Elite Night Credits are the credits towards achieving the requirements for Elite Status and Lifetime Elite Status [1]. The programme rules state that an Elite Night Credit is only earned on a night during a Qualifying Stay, and call that night a Qualifying Night [1]. The tier requirements themselves sit elsewhere in the rules, so the numbers are collected on the elite qualification thresholds page.

Hilton Honors qualifies members for Elite Tier Status on Stays, nights or Eligible Spend in any calendar year, and members must re-qualify each calendar year [2]. The night route sits alongside two alternatives, which the terms set out as: Silver at 4 Stays, 10 nights or US$2,500 of Eligible Spend; Gold at 15 Stays, 25 nights or US$6,000; Diamond at 25 Stays, 50 nights or US$11,500 [2]. Diamond Reserve is the exception to that "or" pattern, requiring either 40 Stays and US$18,000 of Eligible Spend, or 80 nights and US$18,000 of Eligible Spend [2]. Hilton Honors adds that Points earned do not count towards Elite Tier Status qualification [2], so they are not a substitute for nights, Stays or qualifying spend.

What counts as a qualifying night

Hilton Honors defines a "night" as a night that is part of a qualifying Stay [2]. A Stay is the total number of consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, whether or not a guest checks out and checks back in again [2]. Two things follow from that wording: consecutive nights at one property roll into a single Stay, and a night only counts once it belongs to a Stay that meets the programme's conditions [2].

Hilton Honors also says credit towards Elite Tier Status requires the member to be the registered, paying and staying guest at a Participating Hotel who meets the conditions in the terms [2], and separately that Reward Stays count towards the overall Stays and nights used for Elite Tier Status qualification [2]. Because the qualification year matters, the way a calendar year is defined is covered on the qualification period page.

Marriott Bonvoy ties its unit to the same idea from the other direction: the credit exists only for a night inside a Qualifying Stay [1]. Neither set of terms reviewed here publishes a rule that nights credited in one programme count towards status in another, so cross-programme night counting should not be assumed.

Rooms, credit and corrections

Hilton Honors is explicit about quantity: for the purpose of obtaining Elite Tier Status, a member receives Stay and night credit for one room only [2]. Earning of Base Points is wider than that, since a member may earn Base Points for up to four rooms per Stay when all Eligible Spend for those rooms is paid on one folio [2]. The two rules are therefore not the same: more rooms can mean more Points without meaning more elite nights [2].

Marriott Bonvoy's extra-room language appears in the Qualifying Charges definition, which can include the member's own guest room plus up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates, provided the member supplies the membership number at reservation or check-in, stays in one of the reserved rooms as the registered guest, and pays for the charges [1]. Elite Night Credits are described separately, as credits earned on a night during a Qualifying Stay [1]. How extra rooms are treated across programmes is set out in the guide to multiple rooms, points and night credit.

Corrections run on the programme's side. Marriott Bonvoy may correct, adjust, cancel or reconcile Points, Qualifying Nights, status, benefits or transactions at any time, including where a benefit was issued in error, the member was not eligible, or fraud is suspected, and it may monitor accounts and transaction history for compliance, naming Qualifying Nights among the activity it reviews [1]. Elite Night Credits are the property of the company and are not transferable except as the rules expressly permit [1].

Exceptions and limits

  • Booking types Hilton Honors excludes. The definition of a Stay carves out wholesale and tour operator packages, contracted crew rates, travel agency discount rates, packages exclusively for casino player card holders, unauthorised member use of Go Hilton Team Member or Family & Friends travel rates, stays secured through Hilton Grand Vacations Club and Hilton Club timeshare programmes, Hilton Grand Vacations marketing packages with a sales presentation requirement, bookings made on HiltonGetaways.com, complimentary or barter rooms, NET Group Tour and Group Tour Series rates, NET contracted Entertainment or Encore rates, third-party website bookings whatever rate was paid, and opaque channel bookings where the brand may not be known when the booking is made [2].
  • No-shows. Hilton Honors awards no Points, Eligible Spend, Stay or night credit towards Elite Tier Status where a member holds a reservation guaranteed with a credit card but does not check in, whether or not the card is charged [2].
  • Properties that leave. Marriott Bonvoy says that if a Participating Property or Participating Brand exits the programme, a member will not earn Points or Qualifying Nights for Elite Status for stays there, even where the reservation was made before the exit date [1].
  • Accommodation outside the programme. Marriott Bonvoy's Branded Residences do not participate, so a guest stay at one earns no Elite Night Credit, unless the residence is expressly identified as participating; the rules list three that do, including Marriott Residences Salgados Resort in the Algarve and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach [1]. Non-participating properties named in the rules include Bulgari Hotels and Resorts at all locations and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore [1].
  • Limited participation. Even where a Design Hotels property participates in Marriott Bonvoy, participation is limited and subject to the specific earning, redemption and benefit rules for that collection [1].
