How to Book Hilton Honors Awards

A Hilton Honors award stay is a hotel booking paid with Hilton Honors Points, either as an all-Points Standard Room Reward Stay or as a Points & Money Rewards stay that mixes Points with cash. [2] Hilton's Points page describes the same product more loosely, saying members can book free nights "with any combination of Points and money" and that there are "No blackout dates". [1] This guide sets out what those two documents say about finding, pricing and booking such a stay, and where they leave a question to the individual hotel. [1] [2]

Key takeaways

  • Hilton sells free nights as a booking "with any combination of Points and money" and advertises "No blackout dates". [1]
  • Online redemption for hotel reward stays runs through the "Reward" tab in the member's account. [2]
  • A Standard Room is defined by each hotel and is subject to availability at participating hotels within the Hilton Portfolio. [2]
  • Every fifth night is free on an all-Points Standard Room Reward Stay of five or more nights, capped at four free nights per stay, and the benefit does not extend to Points & Money Rewards stays. [2]
  • The 48-Hour Reservations Guarantee does not cover reservations paid for in part or in full with Points or with Hilton free night certificates. [2]

Finding a stay that takes Points

Hilton's Points page lists "Free nights" first among the ways to use Points, and the same page opens with a hotel search taking a destination, check-in and check-out dates, and a room and guest count. [1] The terms add the route inside a member account: members reach online Point redemption for hotel reward stays by clicking the "Reward" tab. [2]

Two things decide whether a particular night can be booked with Points. The first is participation, since hotels within the Hilton Portfolio are the participating hotels, participation can change at any time without notice, and the terms tell members to consult the individual hotel listing on Hilton.com or HiltonHonors.com. [2] The second is the room type: a Standard Room is defined by each hotel and is subject to availability at participating hotels within the Hilton Portfolio. [2]

"No blackout dates" is Hilton's own wording on its Points page, and it sits alongside the standard-room definition rather than replacing it, so the question on any given date is whether that hotel has a Standard Room available for Points. [1] [2] Neither page checked here publishes a list of excluded dates or excluded hotels. [1] [2]

What the stay costs

Hilton's terms describe two redemption shapes: an all-Points Standard Room Reward Stay, and a Points & Money Rewards stay in which part of the price is paid in cash. [2]

The published pricing rule that matters most on a longer stay is the fifth-night concession. For every Standard Room Reward Stay of five or more nights using all Points, every fifth night is free, with no more than four free nights awarded per stay. [2] It applies to five consecutive nights within the same all-Points Standard Room Reward Stay at the same property, up to twenty nights, and must be confirmed at the time of booking. [2] Once applied, no Points are charged for the fifth, tenth, fifteenth and twentieth nights, and every other night is charged at the applicable full Standard Room Reward price. [2] The terms list this benefit under Silver Elite, Gold Elite, Diamond Elite and Diamond Reserve Elite tier status. [2]

Earning differs between the two shapes. Members may earn Points on the money portion of a Points & Money Rewards stay at all participating hotels, and on incidental charges during an all-Points reward stay where those charges count as Eligible Spend. [2] Reward stays also count toward the stays and nights used for elite tier qualification, elite tier status gifting and milestone bonuses. [2]

Booking, and what survives it

Redemption is worth timing around account activity. Members with no eligible activity in any 24 consecutive month period are subject to forfeiture of all accumulated Points, and the four qualifying actions the terms list are staying at a participating hotel, earning Points through Hilton or a third party, purchasing Points, and donating Points through the Hilton Honors Giving Back Program. [2] A reward already redeemed is protected, though: any reward redeemed before Points are forfeited — the terms give a hotel reservation booked or a car rental voucher obtained as examples — is still valid. [2]

Some costs sit outside the Points price. Hilton's terms state that, unless otherwise stated, quoted rates are per room per night based on single or double occupancy and exclude taxes, gratuities, incidental charges and resort fees where applicable. [2] That sentence appears in the member-discount section of the terms, and the same document tells members to ask the participating hotel what a required resort fee includes. [2] Neither page checked here sets a separate resort-fee rule for award stays, so a fee question is a question for the individual hotel. [1] [2]

Booking channel matters if on-property benefits matter. The terms make qualification for on-property benefits depend on a confirmed reservation made through an official Hilton brand site or Hilton Honors site, Hilton Reservations and Customer Care, the Hilton Honors or Hilton mobile app, the hotel directly, or an IATA-accredited travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or one of the named global distribution systems. [2]

Exceptions and limits

  • No 48-hour guarantee on award stays. The 48-Hour Reservations Guarantee does not apply to reservations paid for in part or in full by Hilton Honors Points, or by free night certificates issued by Hilton. [2]
  • Fifth-night conditions. The free night applies only to all-Points Standard Room Reward Stays, not to paid stays or Points & Money Rewards, and not where the stay is booked as part of a reward-stay offer, package or promotion from Hilton or its partners. [2] If the free night is declined, the reservation is cancelled, or check-out happens before the fifth night, the free night is forfeited, and it has no cash or Points value. [2]
  • Properties with a resort fee. WiFi internet access may not be complimentary in meeting spaces or at properties with a resort fee, and bottled water is not complimentary at participating hotels with a resort fee that includes bottled water. [2]
  • Partner certificates. Stays redeemed with a marketing partner's discount rate or free certificate, such as a frequent flyer award or travel award, do not earn Points unless the certificate states otherwise. [2]
  • Programme changes. Hilton Honors reserves the right to add, modify, delete or change rules, procedures, conditions, benefits and rewards, including changes that affect the value of Points or rewards already accumulated. [2]
