FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a qualifying rate?
A qualifying rate is a room rate, or a way of booking a room, that a hotel loyalty programme treats as eligible for points, elite night credit or progress toward a higher tier. Programmes write their own eligibility rules, so the same room can earn credit through one rate or channel and earn nothing through another. At Marriott Bonvoy, the loyalty programme of Marriott International, “Qualifying Rates for Stays” form part of Qualifying Charges — the spend on which members earn base points. [1]

Key takeaways
- Eligibility comes from the programme’s rules, not from the price of the room: the rate, the booking channel and the property all feed into the decision, and each programme defines them separately.
- Marriott Bonvoy earns base points on Qualifying Charges, and Qualifying Rates for Stays are one of the charge types inside that definition. [1]
- The booking also has to be attached to the member: Marriott requires the membership number at reservation or check-in, the member as registered guest, and the member to pay. [1]
- Complimentary services and Award Redemptions sit outside Marriott’s qualifying charges, and a property that leaves the programme stops earning points or elite nights altogether. [1]
How does a qualifying rate work in practice?
In most hotel programmes the eligible room rate is the anchor of a wider set of eligible spend: the room charge counts, and certain charges posted to the same bill count alongside it. Marriott’s rules follow that pattern. Qualifying Charges are charges a member incurs during a stay in a guest room at a participating property, as the registered guest, on their folio, together with up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates. [1] The first item in the list of what those charges may include is Qualifying Rates for Stays; food and beverage, direct-dial in-room telephone and fax, and in-room movies and video games are named with it. [1]
Three conditions apply to the whole set: the member gives their membership number at the time of reservation or at check-in, stays in one of the reserved guest rooms as the registered guest, and pays for the charges. [1] A recognised rate therefore only starts earning once the booking is linked to the member and the member settles the bill.
All-inclusive stays work slightly differently. At All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy resorts, and at participating properties that offer all-inclusive packages year-round and are designated as all-inclusive, qualifying charges include qualifying rates for stays, premium food and beverage bought at the property in addition to the qualifying rate (excluding alcohol and tobacco where prohibited by law), extra-person charges on paid stays at a qualifying rate, spa, golf and other resort-run activities managed by the property, and taxes, service charges and gratuities that form part of the qualifying room package rate. [1] Certain incidental charges may qualify in limited cases. [1]
What counts as a qualifying rate at Marriott Bonvoy?
Marriott Bonvoy’s Program Rules were updated in October 2026 and cover the programme’s participating properties and brands. [1] Base points are earned on Qualifying Charges, or currency equivalent, and the rate depends on the brand. [1]
| Where the stay is | Base points |
|---|---|
| Most participating properties | 10 |
| Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, City Express, Element, Four Points Flex, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Executive Apartments, Protea Hotels, Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites | 5 |
| Series by Marriott in the United States, Canada and Greater China | 10 |
| Series by Marriott elsewhere | 5 |

Marriott Executive Apartments is the clearest case of the rate doing the work: members do not earn points on Qualifying Charges there, only on Qualifying Rates. [1]
Points are only half of the picture. Elite progress is assessed separately, because an Elite Night Credit is earned only on a night during a Qualifying Stay. [1]
Which Marriott Bonvoy bookings earn no points or elite nights?
- Award stays and free services. Marriott lists complimentary services and Award Redemptions among the charges that do not qualify for points. [1] Award bookings carry their own rate entries too: when a member searches with points, Cash + Points and PointSavers rates appear as separate rates to select. [4]
- Certain booking channels. At Atlantis, Paradise Island, a non-branded property with limited participation, members may earn points or miles on the room rate only, and points are not earned — and cannot be redeemed — for reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com. [1]
- Properties that leave or never join. If a participating property or brand exits the programme, members no longer earn points or qualifying nights for elite status on stays there, even where the reservation was made before the exit date. [1] Branded residences that are not expressly listed as participating earn no points, miles, elite night credit or programme benefits. [1]
- Limited participation. Design Hotels properties that take part in the programme do so in a limited way, under specific earning, redemption and benefit rules. [1]
Exceptions and limits
- Missing credit has a deadline. Requests for missing credit for eligible points, qualifying nights, qualifying stays or qualifying charges must reach Marriott within one year of the activity, subject to posting timelines, request channels, documentation requirements and property- or programme-specific procedures. [1] New members may request credit for eligible activity completed in the 30 days before enrolment if they ask within one year; earlier activity is not eligible. [1]
- Rate-only earning. At Marriott Executive Apartments the usual charge-based earning does not apply, and credit follows the qualifying rate instead. [1]
- Corrections. Marriott may correct, adjust, cancel or reconcile points, qualifying nights, status or transactions where a benefit was issued in error, the member was not eligible, or fraud is suspected. [1]
- Scope. The rules above belong to Marriott Bonvoy; other hotel programmes publish their own definitions of eligible rates and channels, so check the terms of the programme you intend to credit.
Frequently asked questions
Do award nights earn points?
No. Marriott Bonvoy lists Award Redemptions among the charges that do not qualify for points, alongside complimentary services. [1]
Does a qualifying rate guarantee elite night credit?
Elite Night Credits are earned only on a night during a Qualifying Stay at Marriott Bonvoy, so the rate is one part of the test rather than the whole of it. [1]
How long do I have to claim missing points or nights?
Within one year of the activity, and Marriott applies posting timelines, documentation requirements and property-specific procedures to those requests. [1]
Do stays at every Marriott-branded property earn points?
No. Branded residences that are not expressly listed as participating earn no points, miles, elite night credit or benefits, and Design Hotels participation is limited. [1]
