FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is a direct-booking requirement?

Direct-booking requirement is a loyalty programme rule that makes points, elite credit or member benefits depend on where a reservation was booked, not only on whether the stay or flight took place. It usually names the booking channels a programme accepts and the channels that fall outside its earning or benefit rules.

Key takeaways

  • Hilton Honors makes on-property benefits conditional on a confirmed reservation made through one of its listed channels. Non-Hilton-direct channels, non-designated global distribution systems (GDSs), third-party websites, opaque website rates and third-party packages not booked through an eligible channel fall outside that list. [2]
  • An intermediary can be inside the rule: Hilton includes an IATA accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or Amadeus, Apollo/Galileo, Worldspan or SABRE. [2]
  • For Hilton earning, a Stay excludes third-party website bookings irrespective of rate paid and opaque channel bookings; ineligible stays do not earn Points, Eligible Spend, Stay or night credit. [2]
  • Marriott Bonvoy’s Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas terms exclude reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com from earning Points or Miles and from Points redemption. [1]

How does a direct-booking requirement work?

At its simplest, the rule asks which channel created the booking. A member can pay for the room or flight and still find that the reservation sits outside the programme’s earning or benefit rules if it came through an excluded channel. The rule therefore works as a condition of earning or recognition, not as a condition of travel.

The details are programme-specific. One programme may accept its own website, app, reservation line and a set of distribution systems; another may restrict a single property or booking site. The effect can cover points, elite credit, on-property benefits or a combination of them.

Hilton Honors is one programme that sets out both the channels that qualify for on-property benefits and the channels that do not. [2] Marriott Bonvoy’s programme rules define “Marriott Channels” as Marriott-owned and operated channels, including Marriott Websites, Mobile Apps, Participating Properties and Customer Engagement Centers, including Member Support. [1] A third-party website — often an online travel agency (OTA) — may look identical at check-in, but the programme can treat the booking differently for points, elite credit or benefits.

Which booking channels satisfy a direct-booking requirement?

Hilton Honors lists the following channels and outcomes for on-property benefits. [2]

Third-party hotel package or travel package not booked through an eligible channelNot awarded [2]
Ineligible stayNot awarded unless the hotel contract has specific benefits included [2]

Hilton also states that not all amenities are provided by all participating hotels. [2] Members must be the registered, paying and staying guest to qualify for on-property amenities, and member amenities are not transferable to another individual, including another Hilton Honors member. [2]

Do direct-booking rules affect points and elite credit?

Hilton Honors says Points can be earned for Stays only at Participating Hotels. [2] To earn Points or credit toward Elite Tier Status for hotel stays, a member must be a registered, paying and staying guest at a Participating Hotel and meet the conditions in the terms. [2] Its definition of a Stay excludes third-party website bookings irrespective of the rate paid, and opaque channel bookings. [2] Hilton also says Points or Eligible Spend, Stay or night credit toward Elite Tier Status may not be earned for or during ineligible stays, including folio charges incurred during an ineligible stay. [2]

Corporate billing has its own line. Hilton says a member whose individual hotel folio charges are billed directly to a company, and who is responsible for authorization for settlement at check-out, is eligible for Eligible Spend and Points. [2] Group master-billing arrangements, where charges for multiple rooms are placed on one hotel folio and billed to a company or common address or settled at check-out by one individual, are not eligible for Eligible Spend and Points. [2]

Agent bookings can also sit inside the rules. Hilton includes an IATA accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or one of the named GDSs among the channels that qualify for on-property benefits. [2]

At Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas, Marriott Bonvoy applies a property-specific booking-site restriction. [1] The terms say Points or Miles are not earned, and Points cannot be redeemed, for reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com. [1] The property is a non-branded Participating Property with limited participation in the Marriott Bonvoy programme. [1]

What are the exceptions and limits?

  • A booking made through an eligible channel does not by itself make every benefit available: Hilton says not all amenities are provided by all participating hotels, and members must be the registered, paying and staying guest for on-property amenities. [2]
  • An intermediary can satisfy the rule: Hilton includes an IATA accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or Amadeus, Apollo/Galileo, Worldspan or SABRE. [2]
  • A property’s separate booking site can fall outside the rule: under the Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas terms, bookings made through AtlantisBahamas.com do not earn Points or Miles and cannot use Points. [1]
  • Corporate billing can change the result: an individual folio billed directly to a company is eligible for Hilton Eligible Spend and Points, while group master-billing is not. [2]
  • An ineligible stay remains excluded unless the hotel contract includes specific benefits. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Does booking direct always earn points?

No single rule covers all programmes. Hilton Honors earns Points for Stays only at participating hotels, and its Stay definition excludes third-party website and opaque channel bookings. [2] Marriott’s Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas terms separately exclude bookings made through AtlantisBahamas.com from earning Points or Miles. [1]

Are third-party website bookings eligible for Hilton Honors on-property benefits?

Hilton says they are not: on-property benefits are not awarded for reservations booked through a non-Hilton-direct channel, a third-party website or any other channel, nor for opaque bookings or third-party packages not booked through an eligible channel. [2]

Do travel agent bookings count for Hilton Honors benefits?

An IATA accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or Amadeus, Apollo/Galileo, Worldspan or SABRE is included among the channels that qualify for on-property benefits. [2] A non-designated GDS is not. [2]

Is booking by phone a direct booking?

Hilton lists its Reservations & Customer Care phone line as an eligible channel for on-property benefits, and Marriott includes Customer Engagement Centers in its definition of Marriott Channels. [1] [2]

What is an opaque booking?

Hilton describes opaque websites as rates where the hotel brand and specific hotel are not known until the booking is made; those bookings are not awarded on-property benefits. [2]
