How to earn airline miles and status credit on OTA tickets
Miles and status credit on an OTA ticket are the award miles and elite qualifying credits a frequent flyer programme awards for a flight that was booked through an online travel agency instead of with the airline. Under United's published rules for travel on Virgin Australia, an agency-issued ticket can still earn in full, because the deciding factors are the ticket number prefix, the carrier operating the flight and the fare class. [7]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- A ticket bought through a travel agency is not automatically barred from earning: United's MileagePlus rules treat a ticket as bought from United when its number starts with 016, and that definition expressly includes tickets bought from a travel agency or other travel website. [7]
- The ticket number prefix chooses the earning table, and the fare class or fare brand inside that table sets the rate or percentage. [7]
- MileagePlus members can earn award miles and Premier qualifying credits (PQP and PQF) on eligible flights, and the membership number must be on the reservation and on the boarding pass at check-in. [7]
- Credit follows the MileagePlus terms in force when the flight is taken, not the terms in force when the ticket was bought, booked or reserved. [7]
- Some features remain tied to the airline's own channels: American's cash and miles bookings are made on aa.com and in American's digital app. [5]
Why an OTA ticket can still earn
Buying through an intermediary does not by itself remove earning. [7] United's MileagePlus page for Virgin Australia sorts earning by how the ticket was issued, and the test it applies is the first three digits of the ticket number rather than the website where the purchase was completed. [7] A ticket numbered 016 counts as bought from United even when it was bought from a travel agency or other travel website, so an agency ticket on 016 stock earns on the same basis as one bought on united.com. [7] That leaves three inputs that matter: ticket stock, the carrier that operates the flight, and the fare class or fare brand. [7]
Ticket stock decides which table applies
016 stock — revenue based. Tickets issued by United earn from the fare rather than from distance. [7] The fare is the base fare plus carrier-imposed surcharges, excluding government-imposed taxes and surcharges, and a ticket bought in another currency is converted to US dollars at an industry standard exchange rate before miles are worked out. [7] Fare classes A, B, C, D, E, G, H, J, K, L, M, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, Y and Z are eligible for accrual, and all other classes do not accrue. [7] For tickets issued on or after 2 April 2026 a member earns 3 miles per dollar, Premier Silver 5, Premier Gold 6, Premier Platinum 7 and Premier 1K 9, with higher cardmember rates of 6 to 12 that the United MileagePlus Debit Rewards Card and United Gateway Card unlock after $10,000 of spending on the card within a calendar year. [7] Tickets issued before 2 April 2026 earned 5 miles per dollar for a member through 11 for Premier 1K. [7]
795 stock and other stock — distance based. A number beginning 795 means Virgin Australia issued the ticket, again whether it came from Virgin Australia, a travel agency or another travel website; on standalone domestic Australia or short-haul international itineraries those tickets earn on flight distance and the fare brand. [7] A ticket whose number begins with neither 016 nor 795 was issued by another airline and earns on flight distance and the fare class of the ticket. [7]
Fare class and fare brand set the rate
Where distance is the basis, the proportion of the scheduled flight distance that is credited depends on the fare class. [7] For flights on or after 24 June 2026 the fare-class table credits business classes J, C and A at 150% and discount business D at 125%, full-fare economy Y, B and W at 100%, economy H and K at 100%, discount economy L, R and E at 75%, deep-discount O, N, V, P and Q at 50%, deepest-discount T, I, S, F and U at 25%, basic economy M at 25% and group bookings G at 25%, while fare classes Z and X earn no mileage credit. [7]
On Virgin Australia stock for standalone Australian domestic or short-haul international travel, the same idea is applied by fare brand instead of letter: business J, C and A at 150%, discount business D at 125%, full-fare economy Flex at 100%, economy Choice at 50% and discount economy Lite at 25%. [7] Both tables are published in separate versions for flights through 23 June 2026 and from 24 June 2026, and United and Virgin Australia reserve the right to change the eligible fare classes at any time without notice. [7] When a partner or codeshare flight is involved, check the operating carrier's class against the published table rather than the class on the itinerary receipt; the partner flight credit checklist walks through that comparison. [7]
Qualifying credits and status benefits
MileagePlus members can earn award miles and Premier qualifying credits (PQP and PQF) on eligible flights, and the page's instruction is to add the MileagePlus number to the reservation and make sure it is on the boarding pass at check-in. [7] PQP and award miles are calculated on the base fare plus carrier-imposed surcharges, excluding government-imposed taxes and surcharges. [7] On itineraries wholly within the United States, and on certain itineraries between the United States and Canada or Mexico, the price displayed on united.com includes up to a 7.5% US Federal Transportation Tax on the base fare, and that tax earns neither PQP nor miles. [7] No separate rate for agency-issued tickets appears among those conditions: the ticket-stock and fare-class tests decide the credit. [7]
Status benefits sit on top of that. Members with Premier Gold status or higher get priority check-in, boarding and security clearance where available on Virgin Australia, one additional free checked bag, and access to Virgin Australia operated lounges, although the extra bag does not apply on Virgin Australia Economy Lite fares. [7]
Booking features can still be channel-specific. American Airlines announced cash and miles bookings for eligible AAdvantage members on aa.com and in American's digital app: after selecting flights priced in cash, the member is shown an optional trip insurance offer at checkout, then available cash and miles combinations with a slider, and the cost summary updates before payment. [5] The announcement of 2 October 2026 describes the feature as rolling out in the coming weeks, and it does not say how the cash portion of such a booking is treated for mileage or Loyalty Point earning. [5] Where a benefit genuinely depends on buying from the airline, it is described under the direct booking requirement.
Status itself can also arrive without flying. American's Instant Status Pass matches status held with Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus, JetBlue TrueBlue or Southwest Rapid Rewards for four months, with benefits continuing to the next membership year if the member meets all three Loyalty Point goals. [4] The first goal is at least 13,000 Loyalty Points in the first four months to keep AAdvantage Gold benefits, 25,000 for Platinum, 42,000 for Platinum Pro and 67,000 for Executive Platinum, and members who registered for the promotion in the previous two years, or who already hold the equivalent or higher AAdvantage status, are not eligible. [4]
Exceptions and limits
- Codeshares. Award miles on codeshare flights accrue according to the operating carrier and its equivalent fare class, which can differ from the booking class that was purchased and change both the base miles and the Premier qualifying credits. [7]
- Timing. Accrual follows the MileagePlus terms in effect at the time of travel, not at the time the air travel was purchased, booked or reserved, and miles may not be awarded for some tickets or may be awarded in an amount smaller than the tables show. [7]
- Eligible fares can change. United and Virgin Australia reserve the right to alter the eligible fare classes at any time without notice. [7]
- Tier affects the amount. The page notes that MileagePlus award miles earned may vary depending on the Premier status of the customer. [7]
