GUIDE

OTA vs direct booking total cost

Total cost in this comparison means the cash a guest actually pays after the quoted rate, taxes, fees, any member discount and any platform credit, plus the loyalty value that is lost when a stay does not count with the hotel programme. The two routes can produce different totals because they publish different price components and different eligibility rules, so this guide uses the online travel agency terms of Booking.com and the loyalty rules of Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors to show what to compare; it does not claim that either route is always cheaper. Key takeaways

  • Under the Hilton Honors terms effective 15 July 2026, third-party website bookings are excluded from the definition of a Stay irrespective of the rate paid, and on-property benefits are not awarded on non-Hilton-direct channels. [4]
  • Booking.com says a guest agrees to pay the cost of the travel experience including any charges and taxes that apply, while Hilton quotes rates that exclude taxes, gratuities, incidental charges and resort fees unless stated otherwise. [2] [4]
  • Both routes offer a member price, but on different conditions: the Hilton Honors Discount runs from 2% off the eligible rate and varies by booking window, region and day of the week, while Booking.com Genius levels depend on completed bookings over two years. [4] [2]
  • Cancellation, prepayment and no-show terms come from the supplier, and Booking.com describes itself as not a party to the terms between guest and provider. [2]

Member rates and price components

The Booking.com customer terms of service were updated on 25 August 2025. [2] On that platform the guest agrees to pay the cost of the travel experience, including any charges and taxes that may apply. [2] Some prices are rounded to the nearest whole number, and the amount paid is based on the original, non-rounded price. [2] A crossed-out price marks the price of a like-for-like booking without the reduction, meaning the same dates, same policies and the same quality of accommodation or class of travel. [2] For how platforms order these figures on screen, see booking platform price display and fees.

Hilton publishes its rates the other way round: unless otherwise stated, quoted rates are per room per night, based on single or double occupancy, and do not include taxes, gratuities, incidental charges and resort fees where those apply. [4] A Hilton quote and a platform quote for the same night can therefore describe different baskets of money, and the two figures only become comparable once both are grossed up to what the guest will actually pay. [2] [4]

Currency adds a component that is easy to miss. If the currency selected on Booking.com is not the same as the service provider's currency, the platform may show prices in the guest's own currency or offer a Pay In Your Own Currency option, and any fee for that service is expressed as a percentage over European Central Bank rates; the card issuer may also charge a foreign transaction fee. [2]

Each route also has a member price. Hilton Honors members receive a discount from 2% off the eligible rate under the Hilton Honors Discount, with the size depending on booking window, region or country, day of the week and other circumstances determined by Hilton Honors; the discount does not apply to all available rates, is limited to four rooms per member per stay, cannot be combined with other promotions, offers or discounts, and is not valid for existing reservations or groups. [4] On Booking.com, Genius rates are discounted rates offered by participating service providers or funded by the platform for members; membership has no fee and is opened by creating an account, and both membership and rates are non-transferable. [2] Genius levels depend on completed bookings within a given period, with Level 2 requiring five bookings within two years and Level 3 fifteen within two years, and cruises, insurance, public transportation and free options are excluded. [2] Additional purchases such as room upgrades, car seats and extra flight luggage do not receive Genius discounts. [2]

Points and elite benefits by channel

Hilton's definition of a Stay expressly excludes third-party website bookings, irrespective of the rate paid, and opaque channel bookings where the brand or specific hotel is not known until the booking is made. [4] Points and credit toward Elite tier status are earned for Stays only at participating hotels, on eligible spend charged to the member's folio. [4] At most brands members earn ten base points per US dollar, while taxes, including city occupancy tax, are not eligible spend. [4] Elite members add a bonus on base points during a qualifying stay: 20% at Silver, 80% at Gold, 100% at Diamond and 120% at Diamond Reserve. [4]

On-property benefits follow the same line. Hilton lists complimentary standard WiFi, MyWay benefits such as complimentary snacks and beverages or a continental breakfast or daily food and beverage credit, and space-available upgrades as requiring a confirmed reservation made through an official Hilton brand or Hilton Honors website, the reservations phone line, the Hilton Honors or Hilton app, the hotel directly, or an IATA-accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or the Amadeus, Apollo/Galileo, Worldspan or Sabre systems. [4] Benefits are not awarded on a non-Hilton-direct booking channel, a non-designated GDS, a third-party website, an opaque site, or a third-party package not booked through an eligible channel. [4] The channel rules behind this sit in the general direct booking requirement, and the elite-benefit side is covered in hotel OTA booking and elite benefits.

Marriott Bonvoy sets out earning from a different direction. Its programme rules, updated October 2026, provide ten base points per US dollar on qualifying charges at most brands, five at a named list of brands and four at StudioRes, where the member is the registered guest, gives the membership number at reservation or check-in and pays the charges, and charges may cover up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates. [3]

Neither programme offers a cash figure to subtract. Marriott states that points, awards and other member benefits have no cash value [3], and Hilton states that accrued points and reward confirmations do not constitute property of the member [4]. Loyalty value in a total-cost comparison therefore has to be argued from the rules of the specific stay rather than read off a published rate. [3] [4]

Cancellation, prepayment and card charges

Cancellation terms on the platform come from the supplier. Booking.com says that if a guest cancels or does not show up, any cancellation or no-show fee and any refund depend on the service provider's policy, that some bookings cannot be cancelled free while others can only be cancelled free before a deadline, and that policies on damage deposits, extra beds, breakfast, pets and accepted cards appear on the provider pages, in the booking process, in the fine print and in the confirmation. [2]

Prepayment matters as much as the headline rate. A provider may require an upfront payment, which can be taken or pre-authorised when the booking is made and may be non-refundable [2]; where a booking is paid in advance, the provider may cancel it without notice if it cannot collect the balance on the specified date, and any non-refundable amount is then refunded at the provider's discretion. [2] Booking.com describes itself as responsible for the platform but not the travel experience, and as not a party to the terms between guest and provider, with its liability for a booking limited to the cost of that booking as set out in the confirmation email. [2] The platform may help a guest communicate with the provider but cannot guarantee that the provider will read the message or act on it, and contact alone does not create grounds for legal action. [2] On the direct side, Hilton says early departure fees, deposit and cancellation restrictions may apply and vary by hotel, and that stated booking terms such as cancellation, advance purchase and payment terms will apply. [4]

Card-linked offers are the gap in this picture. The terms checked do not publish credit-card statement credits or card-linked offers for these bookings; Booking.com notes only that the card issuer may charge a foreign transaction fee. [2] Booking.com's own Rewards and Wallet scheme is discretionary, pays credits and vouchers into a wallet, lets Travel Credits be spent across bookings but allows only one voucher per booking with no combining of vouchers, and stops rewards being sold or transferred. [2] If a stay paid partly with rewards is cancelled, the provider's cancellation policy decides whether money and rewards are refunded, and rewards issued for a cancelled booking are deleted from the wallet. [2] Claims for a reward that was never received must be made within 12 months, and lost, stolen or expired rewards are not replaced. [2]

Running the comparison

  1. Price identical terms on both sides: same dates, room type, occupancy and cancellation policy, because Booking.com defines its crossed-out comparison as like-for-like on dates, policies and quality. [2]
  2. Gross up the direct quote for the items Hilton excludes — taxes, gratuities, incidental charges and resort fees — before setting it against a platform price that already includes charges and taxes. [4] [2]
  3. Apply only the member price you actually qualify for: the Hilton Honors Discount depends on booking window, region and day of the week, and the Genius level depends on completed bookings. [4] [2]
  4. Subtract loyalty value only where the stay would count: for Hilton Honors a third-party booking falls outside the Stay definition and outside the benefits list [4], and for Marriott Bonvoy the earning conditions have to be checked against the individual booking [3]. For airline-side credit in the same situation, see airline OTA booking and status credit.
  5. Add the cost of risk: a prepaid, non-refundable platform rate against a flexible direct rate is not a like-for-like comparison. [2] [4]
  6. Add currency and card costs if you pay in a currency other than the provider's. [2]
  7. Count platform credit at its rules rather than its face value, since one voucher per booking and deleted rewards on cancellation reduce what a wallet balance is worth. [2]

Exceptions and limits

  • Broken prices. Booking.com says obvious errors and misprints are not binding, so a mistaken rate may be cancelled with anything paid refunded. [2]
  • Direct is not automatically eligible. Marriott states that points or miles are not earned, and points cannot be redeemed, for reservations booked through AtlantisBahamas.com, a brand's own site for one participating property. [3]
  • Direct-only guarantees. Hilton's 48-hour reservations guarantee for Diamond members does not apply to reservations paid in part or in full with points or with free night certificates, and it covers reservations made online at a hotel official website, through Hilton Reservations and Customer Care, through Diamond Special Services or directly with the hotel; it is excluded at named properties and periodically restricted at some extended-stay brands. [4]
  • Rules can move. Booking.com may change any feature of Genius, including membership levels, eligible booking types and programme structure [2]; Hilton reserves the right to modify or delete programme rules with or without notice even where changes affect the value of points or rewards [4]; Marriott may amend its rules and redemption structures even where that affects the value of points or the ability to obtain awards [3].
