PROGRAMME PROFILE

Booking.com Genius: levels, discounts and travel benefits

Booking.com Genius is Booking.com's free loyalty programme: creating an account unlocks a first level of discounts on participating stays and rental cars, and completing further bookings within two years moves a member to levels with wider discounts and extra travel rewards. [1] Booking.com's customer terms describe the Genius rate as a discounted rate offered by participating service providers or funded by Booking.com for certain products and services. [2]

Key takeaways

  • Genius has three levels: Level 1 comes with a free Booking.com account, Level 2 requires five completed bookings within two years and Level 3 requires fifteen completed bookings within two years. [1] [2]
  • Stay discounts run from 10% at Level 1 to 10–20% at Level 3 and are applied to the price before taxes and fees; rental car discounts of 10–15% apply to the cost of the car only. [1]
  • Levels are not lost: Booking.com says it does not demote members and that the rewards unlocked at a level are kept for life. [1]
  • One reservation counts as one booking, however many nights, rooms, seats or travellers it covers. [1]
  • Genius discounts are applied automatically, with no promotion codes. [1]

How the levels and progress work

Level 1 gives 10% off stays and 10% off select rental cars, plus flight price alerts. [1] Level 2, reached after five bookings in two years, gives 10–15% off stays and rental cars, complimentary breakfast at select stays and free room upgrades at select stays. [1] Level 3, reached after fifteen bookings in two years, gives 10–20% off stays, 10–15% off rental cars, the same breakfast and upgrade rewards at select stays, and priority support for stays, described as direct access to a live agent to discuss or modify a stay. [1]

The customer terms say the levels are based on the number of completed bookings made within a given period for any booking type offered by the programme, and they repeat the same five-booking and fifteen-booking thresholds. [2] The programme page adds that completed stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction bookings count toward progress once the member is signed in, and that a booking can take some time to appear because it has to be updated in Booking.com's system first. [1] Each reservation counts once: several rooms booked under a single reservation count as one booking, and several seats on one flight, or a return trip booked under one reservation, count as one booking. [1]

A higher level does not automatically mean a bigger percentage off. Booking.com says discount percentages can vary by property, that some participating properties offer the same discount to members at every level, and that two members at different levels could therefore see the same discount at certain properties. [1] Flight price alerts, a Level 1 feature, track prices for a preferred route and date in the app and notify the member whether the price has fallen, risen or stayed the same; alerts are switched on with a toggle at the top of the flight search results and managed or deleted from the saved list. [1]

Discounts, rewards and how they are applied

Booking.com states that Genius discounts are available at 850,000 participating properties worldwide and on select rental cars. [1] Discounts are calculated on the price before taxes and fees, while the rental car discount applies to the cost of the car only. [1] Eligible options carry a blue Genius label and are also called out for assistive technology such as screen readers, and the discount is applied automatically without a code. [1]

A Genius discount is not exclusive of everything else on the page. Booking.com says that in many cases it can be combined with other applicable discounts, offers and deals, that eligibility criteria are presented before booking, and that the final price shown may reflect several discounts working together rather than the Genius discount alone. [1] The terms explain that a crossed-out price indicates the price of a like-for-like booking without the price reduction applied. [2]

Membership itself carries no fee, is non-transferable and is linked to a specific Booking.com account, and Booking.com says membership can also be linked to specific campaigns or incentives. [2]

Genius, free cancellation and prepayment

A Genius booking is still a booking with a specific property, and the terms that sit around the discount come from that property. Booking.com says each service provider's cancellation policy and other policies are shown on the provider information pages, during the booking process, in the fine print and in the confirmation email; if a guest cancels or does not show up, any cancellation or no-show fee and any refund depend on that provider's policy. [2] The terms add that some bookings cannot be cancelled free of charge at all, while others can only be cancelled free of charge before a deadline. [2]

Payment timing is likewise set by the provider. Where a provider requires an upfront payment, it may be taken or pre-authorized when the booking is made and may be non-refundable, and Booking.com says it does not influence the provider's upfront payment policy and is not responsible for it. [2] For the general pattern of cancellation windows and prepayment on booking platforms, see the cancellation and refund guide and the note on how prices and fees are displayed.

Exceptions and limits

  • Booking types that do not count. The customer terms exclude cruises, insurance, public transportation and free options from the Genius programme, and state that additional purchases such as room upgrades for stays, car seats for rental cars and additional luggage for flights do not attract Genius discounts. [2] The programme page's FAQ list also names ride hail, which the customer terms do not mention. [1] [2]
  • Rewards marked "select". Complimentary breakfast and free room upgrades are described as available at select stays, so they are not a general entitlement of Level 2 or Level 3. [1]
  • Programme changes. Booking.com reserves the right to change any feature of the Genius programme, including the membership levels, the booking types eligible for progression and the way the programme is structured. [2]
  • Fraud and misuse. Booking.com may investigate fraud, misuse or abuse, and says this may result in a membership being cancelled and earned rewards being lost. [2]
