FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is booking-platform rewards account eligibility?

Booking-platform rewards account eligibility is the set of rules that decides who may open a loyalty account on a travel booking site, what details are needed to do so, and what state that account must be in for its discounts and rewards to apply. At Booking.com the programme is called Genius, and the entry condition is a free Booking.com account, which Booking.com says needs only an email address to create. [2]

Key takeaways

  • Booking.com ties Genius levels, discounts and rewards to the account a traveller is signed in to; signed out, the panels that would show a level and progress show a sign-in prompt instead. [2]
  • Joining is free and, in Booking.com's words, all a new member needs to sign up is an email address. [2]
  • Higher levels come from completed bookings — five within two years for Level 2 and 15 within two years for Level 3 — and Booking.com says it does not demote members to lower levels. [2]
  • Some reservation types never count toward progress, and the size of a discount can differ from one property to the next. [2]

What does a rewards account eligibility rule decide?

A rewards account is the record that ties a traveller's discounts, loyalty level and progress to one identity on a booking site. Eligibility is the gate in front of that record: it fixes who is allowed to hold an account, what a person has to provide to open one, and what condition the account must be in for the benefits to land.

The term is usually read as a bundle of separate questions: registration (whether an account is free and what identifiers are needed to create it), account identity (whether the platform treats the traveller as the same member across devices and bookings), standing (whether the account is signed in at the moment a booking is made), and the scope of qualifying activity (which reservations or purchases are allowed to count). Each programme answers these for itself, so one platform's rules cannot be read across to another.

Booking.com's own help text shows how that works in practice. Members are told to sign in before they start searching for an option to book, so that all their available discounts are shown, and to make sure the same account is signed in on every device they use. [2]

How do you open a Booking.com Genius account?

Booking.com's loyalty programme is called Genius, and Booking.com describes it as free. [2] The programme's own explanation is that creating a Booking.com account is the step that unlocks Genius Level 1, and that all a new member needs to sign up is an email address. [2] A visitor who does not yet hold an account is told that creating one now will instantly unlock Level 1 discounts. [2]

Level 1 carries 10% discounts on select stays and on select rental cars worldwide. [2] On stays the discount is applied to the price before taxes and fees, while on rental cars it applies to the cost of the car only. [2] Booking.com also lists flight price alerts as a Level 1 benefit, available by tracking a route and date in the app. [2]

How does being signed in change what your rewards account shows?

Booking.com's programme pages react to whether a visitor is signed in. When signed out, the panels that would show a member's level and progress display a prompt to sign in instead. [2] Booking.com adds that a member may in fact be at a higher level than the page suggests and has to sign in to see the correct one. [2] Where the level shown on a computer differs from the level shown on a phone, Booking.com's guidance is to check that the same account is signed in on all devices. [2]

Signing in is also what triggers the benefit. Genius discounts and rewards are applied automatically to eligible stays and rental cars, with no code to enter, and participating options carry a blue Genius label. [2] Where a Genius discount can be combined with other offers, Booking.com says eligibility criteria are presented before booking so the member can see which discounts apply. [2]

Which bookings count toward Genius levels?

Genius has three levels, and progression between them is measured in completed bookings rather than in nights or spend. [2]

Genius levels and what unlocks them
LevelHow it is unlockedWhat Booking.com lists at that level
Level 1Create a free Booking.com account10% discounts on select stays and select rental cars; flight price alerts
Level 25 completed bookings within 2 years10–15% discounts on select stays and rental cars; free breakfasts and free room upgrades on select stays
Level 315 completed bookings within 2 years10–20% discounts on select stays, 10–15% on rental cars; free breakfasts and free room upgrades on select stays; priority support on all stays

Each reservation counts as one booking, however many nights, rooms, people, seats or flights it covers, so several rooms booked under a single reservation count once and a return flight booked under one reservation counts once. [2] Completed stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction bookings all contribute to progress, and Booking.com notes that a completed booking can take some time to appear while it is updated in its system. [2]

Which reservations are excluded and what limits apply?

  • Excluded reservation types. Ride hail, cruises, insurance, public transit, free options and extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats for rental cars and additional luggage do not count toward Genius progress. [2]
  • No demotion. Booking.com says it does not move members to lower levels, and that once a level is unlocked the rewards at that level are kept for life. [2]
  • Level is not a promise of a bigger discount. Discount percentages can vary by property, and some participating properties give members at every level the same discount, so two members at different levels may see identical prices at those properties. [2]
  • Availability is limited to participating properties. Genius savings apply at properties and rental car options marked with a blue Genius label, which Booking.com puts at 850,000 participating properties worldwide. [2]
