COMPARISON
Booking-platform rewards vs hotel loyalty: what each gives
Booking-platform rewards are discounts and free extras that an online travel site gives to signed-in members who book through it — Booking.com's Genius programme, for example, runs three levels with 10% to 20% off stays at participating properties, plus breakfast and room upgrades at select hotels on the upper levels [2]. Hotel loyalty is a hotel group's own programme, such as Marriott Bonvoy, which awards points on qualifying hotel spending and one Elite Night Credit per qualifying night toward tiered elite status [7]. The two pay out in different currencies: a booking-platform reward is a reduction on the price of a reservation, while hotel loyalty points and elite credit build up in an account and are spent later [2] [7].

Key takeaways
- Genius is Booking.com's free loyalty programme with three levels: a free account unlocks Level 1, five bookings within two years unlock Level 2, and fifteen bookings within two years unlock Level 3 [2].
- Genius rewards are described as discounts on the booking price plus on-property extras such as free breakfast and room upgrades at select stays, and Booking.com says unlocked rewards are kept for life [2].
- Marriott Bonvoy awards points on qualifying hotel charges and one Elite Night Credit per qualifying night, with six levels running from Member to Ambassador Elite [6] [7].
- Bonvoy points can be spent on free nights from 12,000 points per night, on Cash + Points rates, or moved to 38 airline programmes at a 3-to-1 ratio with most of them [9] [8].
- Neither channel wins on design alone: the outcome depends on the rate, how often and how long you stay, the status you hold and how you would actually use the rewards [2] [7].
How does Booking.com Genius work?
Genius is a free programme. Creating a Booking.com account unlocks Genius Level 1 straight away, and the higher levels are reached through completed bookings rather than through nights or spend: five bookings within two years for Level 2, and fifteen bookings within two years for Level 3 [2]. Discounts are applied automatically to eligible stays and rental cars with no codes needed, and participating options carry a blue Genius label [2].
| Level | How it is unlocked | Stay discount | Other rewards listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Create a free Booking.com account | 10% | 10% off select rental cars; flight price alerts |
| Level 2 | 5 bookings in 2 years | 10–15% | 10–15% off select rental cars; free breakfasts and free room upgrades at select stays |
| Level 3 | 15 bookings in 2 years | 10–20% | 10–15% off select rental cars; free breakfasts, free room upgrades; priority support on all stays |
Stay discounts are calculated on the price before taxes and fees, while rental-car discounts apply to the cost of the car only [2]. The programme covers 850,000 participating properties worldwide along with select rental cars [2]. Each reservation counts as a single booking toward progress, however many nights, rooms, seats or people it covers, and stays, flights, rental cars, taxis and attraction bookings all count once completed [2]. Ride hail, cruises, insurance, public transit, free options and extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats and additional luggage are excluded from progress [2].
Levels are not taken away. Booking.com states that it does not demote members to lower levels, and that once a level is unlocked the rewards at that level are kept for life [2].
How does hotel loyalty work in Marriott Bonvoy?
Marriott Bonvoy is Marriott International's loyalty programme and is free to join for individuals who are at least 18 or have reached the age of majority where they live [7]. Members earn base points on qualifying charges at most participating brands; different rates apply at Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, City Express, Element, Four Points Flex, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Protea Hotels, Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites and StudioRes. At Marriott Executive Apartments members earn points on the Qualifying Rate only and do not earn points on other qualifying charges [7]. A member also earns one Elite Night Credit for each qualifying night of a qualifying stay, and that credit is what moves the account up the tiers [7].
| Level | Nights per year | Bonus points | Other benefits listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Member | 0–9 | — | Free in-room Wi-Fi when booking through Marriott websites or app; member rates; mobile check-in |
| Silver Elite | 10 | 10% more points | Priority late checkout |
| Gold Elite | 25 | 25% more points | Enhanced room upgrade; 2 p.m. late checkout |
| Platinum Elite | 50 | 50% more points | Enhanced room upgrade including select suites; welcome gift choice |
| Titanium Elite | 75 | 75% more bonus points | Enhanced room upgrade; welcome gift choice |
| Ambassador Elite | 100+ plus $23,000+ USD qualifying spend per year | 75% more bonus points | Dedicated Ambassador service; Your24 |
Some listed benefits are tied to booking through Marriott's own channels: complimentary in-room Wi-Fi is described for members who book through Marriott's websites or app, alongside member rates and mobile check-in [6]. The welcome gift choice at Platinum Elite and Titanium Elite lets members pick points, a breakfast offering or an amenity, and what is on offer varies by brand [6]. Late checkout and upgrades are subject to availability [6].
Points can be spent on free nights starting at 12,000 points per night, on Cash + Points rates at participating hotels, and on PointSavers rates advertised at up to 20% off at participating hotels; Gold Elite members and above can also request Nightly Upgrade Awards after booking [9]. Points move to 38 airlines at a 3-to-1 ratio with most programmes, in transfers of 3,000 to 240,000 points a day, and Marriott adds 5,000 bonus miles for every 60,000 points transferred except with American Airlines AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles and Delta SkyMiles; transfers to United MileagePlus earn 10,000 bonus miles per 60,000 points [8].
How do the two compare on one stay?
Side by side, the channels hand back different things. Genius returns a percentage off a booking, plus on-property extras at select stays on Levels 2 and 3; Bonvoy returns points on qualifying charges and elite credit toward status [2] [7].
| Question | Booking.com Genius | Marriott Bonvoy |
|---|---|---|
| What is earned | A discount on the booking price plus select extras [2] | Points on qualifying charges plus Elite Night Credits [7] |
| What drives progress | Completed bookings, not nights or spend [2] | Qualifying nights for status; qualifying charges for points [7] |
| When it is applied | Automatically on eligible stays and rental cars when signed in [2] | Credited to the account after a qualifying stay [7] |
| How long rewards last | Unlocked rewards are kept for life, with no demotion [2] | Points are forfeited after 24 consecutive months without Qualifying Activity [7] |
| How rewards are used | On Booking.com stays and select rental cars [2] | Free nights from 12,000 points, Cash + Points, PointSavers, upgrades, airline transfers [9] [8] |
Two structural differences matter more than the headline percentages. Bonvoy points are forfeited after 24 consecutive months without qualifying activity and cannot be reinstated, whereas Booking.com says an unlocked Genius level is kept for life [7] [2]. And Bonvoy points have no cash value and may not be sold, bartered or transferred except as the rules allow, so what they are worth to a member depends on the redemption chosen: a free night, a Cash + Points stay or a transfer to an airline [7] [9] [8].
Which side comes out ahead is not settled by programme design alone. Genius discount percentages vary by property, and Booking.com notes that a higher Genius level does not necessarily mean a bigger discount, because some participating properties offer the same discount to members at every level [2]. On the hotel side, the return depends on the rate paid, how many qualifying nights the stay is credited with under the rules above, and which redemption the member eventually chooses [7] [9].
Exceptions and limits
- Bookings that do not count. On Booking.com, ride hail, cruises, insurance, public transit, free options and extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats and additional luggage are excluded from Genius progress, and several rooms or nights under one reservation still count as one booking [2].
- Combining discounts. Booking.com says the Genius discount can in many cases be combined with other applicable discounts, offers and deals, with eligibility criteria shown before booking; the stay discount is applied to the price before taxes and fees [2].
- Brand-level earning differences. The standard earning rate applies at most brands, while several brands have a lower rate and StudioRes lower still; Marriott Executive Apartments is narrower still, since members earn points there on the Qualifying Rate only and do not earn points on other qualifying charges [7].
- Account inactivity. Bonvoy members must have Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to keep points, awards and other benefits; qualifying activity includes earning or redeeming points or miles, purchasing points, completing a qualifying stay, or converting points or miles with designated partners, while gifting, transferring or receiving points from another member does not count [7].
- Expiry exceptions. Points in Lifetime Elite Status accounts are not currently subject to expiration, although Marriott says it may apply an expiration policy to those accounts in future; an award redeemed before point forfeiture stays valid unless it is cancelled after the points expiration date [7].
- Missing credit and rule changes. Missing-credit requests must generally be received within one year of the activity, and Marriott may change earning and redemption structures with or without notice [7]. Members may buy up to 100,000 points per calendar year for themselves or another member [8].
- Airline transfers. For most airline partners the name on the frequent flyer account must match the Bonvoy first and last name, the 5,000 bonus-mile offer excludes AAdvantage, LifeMiles and SkyMiles, and Air New Zealand Koru transfers at 200:1 with 75 bonus miles [8].
