How to check hotel elite benefits on OTA bookings
When a hotel room is reserved through an online travel agency (OTA), hotel elite benefits, points and qualifying nights turn on the loyalty programme's published booking-channel rules, not on the member's tier alone. [2] Hilton Honors excludes third-party website bookings from its definition of a Stay and withholds on-property benefits for non-Hilton-direct channels; Marriott Bonvoy conditions earning on qualifying charges. Key takeaways
- Hilton Honors defines a Stay to exclude third-party website bookings, whatever rate was paid, and opaque channel bookings where the brand or hotel is unknown until purchase. [2]
- Hilton withholds on-property benefits, including WiFi, MyWay benefits and space-available upgrades, unless the reservation is made through an official Hilton channel, a Hilton reservations line, a hotel directly, or an IATA-accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or a designated GDS. [2]
- Marriott Bonvoy ties point earning to Qualifying Charges and requires the member to give the membership number at reservation or check-in, be the registered guest and pay the charges. [1]
- For Hilton Honors, the programme terms and the booking channel have to be checked together. [2]
Why the booking channel controls the answer
Hilton Honors defines the stays, rates and channels that earn credit, and those definitions decide whether an OTA booking counts. [2] A member's elite tier may add bonus points or benefits, but it does not replace the programme's booking-channel definitions. [1] [2]
Marriott Bonvoy awards Elite Night Credit only on a night during a Qualifying Stay. [1] Hilton Honors uses a Stay definition that expressly excludes third-party website bookings. [2]
Hilton Honors: third-party bookings
Hilton Honors states the exclusion directly: its definition of “Stay” excludes third party websites bookings, irrespective of rate paid, and “opaque” channel bookings where the brand may or may not be known at the time of purchase. [2] The exclusion applies irrespective of the rate paid, so the Stay definition does not turn on whether the OTA rate was high or low. [2]
Because points and Stay or night credit cannot be earned during ineligible stays, that definition removes third-party website bookings from Hilton's earning and elite-qualification path. [2] The on-property benefits section uses a separate eligible-channel list: an official Hilton hotel brand or Hilton Honors website, a Hilton reservations line, a Hilton Honors or Hilton mobile app, a hotel directly, or an IATA-accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or Amadeus, Apollo/Galileo, Worldspan or SABRE. [2] Hilton then states that on-property benefits are not awarded for reservations booked through a non-Hilton-direct booking channel, a non-designated GDS, a third-party website or any other channel. [2] It also excludes rates on opaque websites and third-party hotel or travel packages not booked through an eligible channel. [2]
The result is that a Hilton OTA booking can fail both the Stay test for points and nights and the channel test for on-property benefits. [2] An IATA-accredited travel agent using a Hilton channel or designated GDS is an exception to a simple direct-only reading, because that route is on Hilton's eligible list. [2]
Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt: rate and guest tests
Marriott Bonvoy's earning rule begins with Qualifying Charges: charges incurred during a stay in a guest room at a Participating Property by the member as registered guest, on their folio, and up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates. [1] For those charges to count, the member must give the membership number at reservation or check-in, stay in one of the reserved rooms as the registered guest and pay the charges. [1] Elite Night Credit is earned only on a night during a Qualifying Stay. [1] The terms attach earning to those conditions; a member's tier affects bonus points separately once Elite Status is met. [1]
Missing-credit requests for eligible points, nights or stays must be received within one year of the activity, subject to timing, documentation and property-specific requirements. [1]
Exceptions and limits
- Hilton treats an IATA-accredited retail travel agent booking through a Hilton channel or designated GDS as an eligible route for on-property benefits, so agent-assisted bookings are not automatically third-party website bookings. [2]
- Hilton's on-property benefits clause preserves a contract-based exception: ineligible stays do not receive benefits “unless hotel contract has specific benefits included.” [2]
- Hilton gives no points, Eligible Spend, Stay or night credit for a no-show reservation, even where the member's credit card is charged under the hotel's no-show policy. [2]
- Marriott's one-year missing-credit window is a deadline, not a guarantee of credit, and remains subject to documentation and posting timelines. [1]
