Booking-platform loyalty programmes compared
Booking-platform loyalty programmes are the reward schemes that travel booking sites run alongside their own search and reservation tools, rather than the programmes of the airlines and hotels being booked. [2] The mechanics set out in detail on this page are those of Booking.com Genius, a free three-level scheme that gives percentage discounts on participating stays and car rentals and keeps unlocked rewards for life. [2]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- Booking.com Genius is free to join and has three levels: a free account unlocks Level 1, five completed bookings within two years unlock Level 2, and fifteen completed bookings within two years unlock Level 3. [2]
- The reward is a percentage discount applied automatically to the price before taxes and fees at participating properties: 10% on stays at Level 1, rising to a 10–20% range at Level 3, with 10–15% on select rental cars from Level 2. [2]
- Once a Genius level is unlocked its rewards are kept for life, and Booking.com says it does not demote members to lower levels. [2]
- Hotel programmes run on a different clock: Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors both require account activity within 24 consecutive months to keep points, while IHG One Rewards Club points expire after 12 months without an earn or redeem transaction. [6] [7] [8]
What Genius rewards
Genius is Booking.com's free loyalty programme, and creating an account is enough to unlock Level 1. [2] At Level 1 members get 10% off participating stays, applied to the price before taxes and fees, and 10% off select rental cars, applied to the cost of the car only; the level also includes flight price alerts for a chosen route and date. [2]
Level 2 raises the stay and rental car discount to a 10–15% range and adds complimentary breakfasts and free room upgrades at select stays, with upgrades applied automatically. [2] Level 3 raises the stay discount to a 10–20% range, leaves the car discount at 10–15%, and adds priority support that gives direct access to a live agent for stays. [2]
Booking.com advertises the discounts at 850,000 participating properties worldwide and on select rental cars, and they are applied automatically at the time of booking with no code needed. [2] Participating options are marked with a blue Genius label in search results. [2]
Tier mechanics: what counts and what is kept
Progress is counted in completed bookings: five bookings within two years for Level 2 and fifteen within two years for Level 3. [2] Each reservation counts as one booking however many nights, rooms, seats or people it covers, and a return flight booked under one reservation also counts as one booking. [2]
Stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction bookings all count toward progress, but ride hail, cruises, insurance, public transit, free options and extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats and additional luggage are excluded. [2] A completed booking appears in the progress total only after it has been updated in Booking.com's system, which the site says can take some time. [2]
Once a level is reached the rewards at that level stay, and Booking.com states that it does not demote members. [2] In many cases the Genius discount can be combined with other discounts and offers, and eligibility is shown before a booking is made. [2]
Expiry and carry-over
Genius is presented as permanent once a level is unlocked, with no annual requalification step stated. [2] Hotel programmes work differently. Marriott Bonvoy members need Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to keep points, awards and other benefits, and points forfeited after 24 consecutive months without such activity cannot be reinstated; gifting, transferring or receiving points from another member does not count as Qualifying Activity. [6] Hilton Honors members are subject to forfeiture of all accumulated points if they have no eligible activity — a stay, earning points, buying points or donating points — in any 24 consecutive months. [7] IHG One Rewards Club-level points expire after 12 months without an earn or redeem transaction, while Elite members' points do not expire for as long as Elite status is maintained. [8]
The practical consequence is that a platform tier and a hotel balance are kept on separate terms: the platform tier responds to how many reservations are completed through that site, while the hotel programme responds to activity credited to its own account. [2] [6]
Booking channels: when a platform booking sits outside hotel rules
Hilton Honors excludes "third party websites bookings (irrespective of rate paid)" from its definition of a Stay, so rooms reserved that way are ineligible stays for earning purposes. [7] IHG One Rewards lists online travel agency or third-party channel bookings, naming Expedia, Travelocity and Priceline as examples, among its non-qualifying rates unless the booking is made through an Authorized Travel Agent. [8] On most non-qualifying rates IHG members do not earn points on the room rate and may not receive member benefits, although other eligible charges on the bill still earn. [8]
For those two programmes, then, a platform discount and hotel programme credit can be alternatives rather than additions on the same stay. [7] [8] Which terms apply depends on the programme and on the channel used, because the platform's discount terms are separate from the hotel's earning rules. [2] [8]
Exceptions and limits
- Genius discounts apply at participating properties and on select rental car options, not on every listing on the site. [2]
- A higher Genius level does not always mean a bigger discount: percentages vary by property, and some participating properties offer the same discount to members at every level. [2]
- Complimentary breakfasts and free room upgrades at Levels 2 and 3 are available on select stays only. [2]
- The rental car discount applies to the cost of the car only, and stay discounts are calculated on the price before taxes and fees. [2]
- Reservations excluded from the programme, such as cruises, insurance and ride hail, do not count toward tier progress even when completed through the site. [2]
- Participation is decided property by property, so the discount appears on Genius-labelled options rather than on every rate returned by a search. [2]
