FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What are booking-platform rewards on guest bookings?

Booking-platform rewards on guest bookings are the loyalty credits a travel booking site gives to the account that makes a reservation, even when a different person is the one who stays in the room, takes the flight or drives the rental car. The rewards follow the booking account rather than the traveller: at Booking.com, Genius membership is linked to a specific account and cannot be transferred, and every completed stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction booking made while signed in counts toward that account's progress. [6] [7]

Key takeaways

  • Booking-platform rewards are credited to the account that completes the reservation, not to the person who travels; Booking.com's Genius membership is linked to one account and is non-transferable. [6] [7]
  • One reservation counts as one booking toward Genius progress, however many nights, rooms, seats or people it covers. [6]
  • Completed stays, flights, rental cars, taxis and attraction bookings all add to progress, while cruises, insurance, public transport, ride hail, free options and extra purchases are excluded. [6] [7]

Who earns the rewards when someone else stays?

The member who completes the reservation is the one who earns. On Booking.com, once a member is signed in, all the stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction bookings they complete count toward their progress in Genius, the company's free loyalty programme. [6] Genius membership and Genius rates are non-transferable, and membership is linked to a specific account. [7] A booking made for a friend, colleague or relative therefore adds to the booker's progress, and the traveller does not have to be the member.

Responsibility for the trip stays with the booker too. Booking.com's customer terms say that, as the person making the booking, you are responsible for the actions and behaviour of everyone in the group in relation to the travel experience, and for obtaining their permission before providing their personal data. [7] The same terms tell members not to let anyone else use their account, because the account holder is responsible for anything that happens with it. [7]

The count is per reservation, not per person. Booking.com says each reservation counts as a booking no matter how many nights, flights or people it includes: several rooms in one hotel booked under a single reservation count as a single booking toward progress, and the same principle applies to multiple seats on one flight or to a return flight booked under one reservation. [6]

Which bookings count toward your level?

Genius has three levels, and a member's level depends on the number of completed bookings made within a set period for any of the travel types the programme offers. [6] [7] As of 18 October 2026 the levels worked as follows:

Booking.com Genius levels as of 18 October 2026 [6] [7]
LevelHow it is unlockedDiscount on staysDiscount on rental carsExtra rewards
Genius Level 1Create a free Booking.com account10%10%Flight price alerts
Genius Level 25 completed bookings within 2 years10–15%10–15%Free breakfasts and free room upgrades at select stays
Genius Level 315 completed bookings within 2 years10–20%10–15%Priority support on all stays

Bookings have to be completed rather than merely made, and completed bookings can take some time to appear in a member's progress before they are updated in Booking.com's system. [6] Members are not demoted: once a level is unlocked, the rewards at that level are theirs for life. [6]

Not every reservation counts. Ride hail, cruises, insurance, public transport, free options and extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats for rental cars and additional luggage are excluded from Genius. [6] The customer terms list cruises, insurance, public transportation and free options, and state that additional purchases such as room upgrades, car seats and extra luggage do not attract Genius discounts. [7] What makes a reservation a qualifying booking in the first place is set out under qualifying booking.

How are the rewards applied to a booking?

Genius rates are discounted rates offered by participating properties or funded by Booking.com for certain products and services. [7] Discounts are applied automatically, with no codes to enter, to eligible stays and rental cars, and eligible options carry a blue Genius label. [6] For stays, the discount is applied to the price before taxes and fees; for rental cars, it applies to the cost of the car only. [6] As of 18 October 2026, Booking.com advertised savings at 850,000 participating properties worldwide and on select rental cars. [6]

A Genius discount can often be combined with other applicable discounts, offers and deals, and the eligibility criteria are shown before a member books. [6] Because the reduction sits on the reservation that the member creates for an eligible property or car, the guest's own accounts play no part in the transaction. [6] [7]

Exceptions and limits

  • Membership is personal. Genius membership is linked to a specific account, membership and rates are non-transferable, and membership can also be tied to specific campaigns or incentives. [7]
  • A higher level does not always mean a bigger discount. Discount percentages vary by property, and some participating properties offer the same discount to members at every level. [6]
  • The programme can change. Booking.com says it may change any feature of Genius, including membership levels, the booking types that count toward progression and the way the programme is structured. [7]
  • Misuse costs the rewards. Booking.com may investigate fraud, misuse or abuse, which can lead to a membership being cancelled and earned rewards being lost. [7]
  • Wallet rewards are separate. Booking.com also runs a Rewards, Credits & Wallet scheme; its terms say rewards cannot be sold, encumbered or transferred to a third party, and that on an account holder's death the account is closed and any pending or available rewards are cancelled. [7]
  • Terms version. The customer terms covering Genius were updated on 25 August 2025. [7]

Frequently asked questions

If I book a hotel for a friend, who gets the Genius progress?

The progress goes to the Booking.com account that completes the booking, because bookings made while signed in count toward that member's progress and membership is linked to a specific account. [6] [7]

Does the guest earn anything from staying on my booking?

Genius membership is non-transferable and linked to one account, so the rewards from the reservation stay with the booking account rather than moving to the traveller. [7] A traveller who wants Genius discounts can create their own free Booking.com account. [6]

Do several rooms for a group count as several bookings?

No. Multiple rooms booked under a single reservation count as one booking toward Genius progress, and multiple seats on one flight or a return flight under one reservation are treated the same way. [6]

Do flights and rental cars booked for someone else count toward my level?

Yes. All stay, flight, rental car, taxi and attraction bookings completed while signed in count toward progress, subject to the listed exclusions. [6]

Is the Genius discount the same at every property?

Not necessarily. Percentages vary by property, and some properties give members at every level the same discount, while higher levels unlock bigger discounts and more rewards where available. [6]
