Hotel booking channels: check points, elite nights and benefits
A member number on the reservation does not guarantee points, elite-night credit or status benefits. Check the programme’s definition of an eligible channel and rate before paying.
Know which channel sold the room
- Brand website or app: often a direct channel, but a qualifying rate and participating property may still be required.
- Hotel, reservations centre or official service desk: may count as an official channel under the programme’s definition. Keep the confirmation.
- Travel agency or corporate platform: some agency bookings qualify; negotiated, group, wholesale and contracted rates may not. Ask which rate plan is being issued.
- Online travel agency (OTA): a third-party listing can be cheaper, but programme points, elite nights and benefits may be limited or unavailable.
Four programme examples
Marriott Bonvoy
Marriott defines official channels and qualifying rates in its terms. Book through an official channel and confirm that the property and rate qualify for points, Elite Night Credit and applicable benefits. Marriott’s published guidance limits Elite Night Credit to the member’s personally stayed and individually billed qualifying night; booking several rooms does not automatically multiply a member’s night credit.
Hilton Honors
Hilton says reservations made through third-party websites do not earn Honors points, stay or night credits, or additional Honors member benefits. Check current local terms and property participation.
World of Hyatt
Hyatt’s current terms list third-party online retailers among ineligible rates. Eligibility also depends on the property, rate and membership details. Some partner collections have their own booking-channel terms.
IHG One Rewards
IHG lists most online travel agency and third-party channel bookings as non-qualifying, while its terms describe regional, authorized-agent and rate-specific exceptions. In Greater China and other regions, locally negotiated rates can be treated differently.
Before you pay
- Confirm the hotel participates in the loyalty programme.
- Check the exact channel and rate type against the programme terms; pay attention to package, group, wholesale, corporate and contracted rates.
- Make sure the reservation shows the correct member number, guest name, room type, cancellation deadline and paying party.
- Confirm whether the stay earns points, qualifying nights or qualifying stays, and which elite benefits apply.
- If an OTA is cheaper, compare the cash saving with the value of any points or benefits you will forgo; include cancellation terms and who can service the booking.
- Keep the confirmation and final folio. If credit is missing, contact the hotel and booking channel, then use the programme’s official claim process and deadline.
The channel is not the only test
A hotel website does not make every rate eligible, and third-party bookings are not treated identically by every programme. The property, rate, region, booking channel and member terms all matter. Card rewards or OTA discounts may still make an external booking worthwhile; calculate those separately from hotel programme credit.
