How to earn KrisFlyer miles without flying

KrisFlyer is the frequent flyer programme of Singapore Airlines, and members can add to their balance without taking a flight by converting credit or charge card points, transacting with partners and shopping through the programme's own channels. [2] [4] Singapore Airlines' own rules restrict what those routes can do: converted card points can only go to the principal cardholder's own account, miles cannot be pooled with another member, and everyday spending on Kris+, KrisShop and Pelago can also build Elite miles for status. [2] [3]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • KrisFlyer is free to join, and Singapore Airlines describes miles as coming from flying as well as from everyday spending with partners. [4]
  • Credit or charge card points converted by a principal cardholder can only be credited to that member's own KrisFlyer or PPS Club account, and members cannot pool miles. [2]
  • Partner credits normally appear two to four weeks after an airline flight and six to eight weeks after using a non-airline partner, with a missing miles claim available after that. [2]
  • Spending on Kris+, KrisShop and Pelago earns Elite miles for status [3], and KrisShop purchases part-paid with miles and cash also earn KrisFlyer miles on the portion paid by credit or debit card, at 1.5 KrisFlyer miles per S$1 of the nett purchase amount [2]; only 20% of the Elite miles needed can come from non-flight activity. [3]

Can credit card points become KrisFlyer miles?

Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer FAQ deals with members who convert credit or charge card points into KrisFlyer miles, and sets a destination rule for them: where the member is the principal credit or charge cardholder, the converted points can only be credited to that member's own KrisFlyer or PPS Club account. [2]

Miles also stay with the individual member. Singapore Airlines does not allow pooling between KrisFlyer or PPS Club members, explaining that its earning and redemption processes are designed to maximise the benefits for individual travellers. [2]

Can you buy miles to top up an award?

When a member redeems online for an award flight or a flight upgrade, someone holding at least half of the KrisFlyer miles required can buy the remainder at US$0.04 per mile, or the equivalent in local currency. [2] Those purchased miles are applied immediately during the online redemption, and the amount paid for them is not refundable. [2]

How do partner transactions earn KrisFlyer miles?

Members should quote their KrisFlyer or PPS Club membership number when booking and present the membership card at check-in or when using a partner's services. [2] Some partners add their own requirements, such as quoting a promotional code, so Singapore Airlines advises checking with the partner before booking. [2]

Partners verify the transaction and the member's status before crediting anything, so miles from airline partners normally post two to four weeks after the flight, while miles from non-airline partners normally post six to eight weeks after the service is used. [2]

If a credit has still not appeared after more than eight weeks, a member can log in, open the Miles section and use Claim Missing Miles, downloading the claim form there. [2] Airline partner claims can also be submitted online by selecting "Other Airlines" and entering the flight details, and an online form covers Singapore Airlines or partner flights taken within the previous six months. [2]

Flights taken before a member joined can still be credited, provided they were taken no earlier than 30 days before the enrolment date. [2]

Do KrisShop and KrisFlyer vRooms purchases earn miles?

On KrisShop.com, a purchase paid partly with miles and partly with a card still earns KrisFlyer miles on the card-paid portion: every S$1 payable by credit or debit card earns 1.5 KrisFlyer miles, and the rate applies to the nett purchase amount only, excluding taxes, delivery charges, import duties and postal clearance. [2] Miles earned on a KrisShop purchase should be credited within six to eight weeks of the transaction. [2]

KrisFlyer vRooms works differently: no KrisFlyer miles are earned on any booking made through krisflyervrooms.com, and hotel rates booked there are generally not eligible for points at most major hotel loyalty programmes. [2]

Does everyday spending count toward KrisFlyer Elite status?

From 1 September 2025, S$1 spent on Kris+, KrisShop and Pelago earns 1 Elite mile, according to Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer Elite qualification page. [3]

For Kris+, eligible spend is the amount paid in person at Kris+ partner outlets by cash, credit or debit card, or a transaction inside the Kris+ app through the payment function where KrisPay miles are earned; KrisShop and Pelago purchases made with that in-app payment function also count. [3] For KrisShop, eligible spend is the nett amount paid by credit or debit card online at KrisShop.com or in the onboard store on Singapore Airlines and Scoot flights, where the KrisFlyer membership number must be given at the time of the transaction, excluding KrisShop purchases made through the Kris+ app, taxes and delivery charges. [3] For Pelago, it is the nett amount paid by card on Pelago.com or the Pelago app, excluding bookings made through the Kris+ app, taxes and delivery charges; bookings completed and used before 1 September 2025 do not qualify. [3]

The Elite miles earned this way are status credit rather than currency: they cannot be used for award flights, upgrade awards or buying tickets. [3] The qualification thresholds, earned within 12 consecutive months, are 25,000 Elite miles for KrisFlyer Elite Silver and 50,000 for KrisFlyer Elite Gold. [3] [4]

Elite miles needed and the non-flight cap [3] [4]
TierElite miles needed in 12 consecutive monthsMost non-flight Elite miles counted
KrisFlyer Elite Silver25,0005,000
KrisFlyer Elite Gold50,00010,000

Non-flight Elite miles may make up at most 20% of the Elite miles required for qualification or renewal, which works out at 5,000 for Elite Silver and 10,000 for Elite Gold. [3] Singapore Airlines' own example: a member with 18,000 flight Elite miles and 6,000 Elite miles from everyday spending can count only 5,000 of the spending miles, leaving 23,000 and short of the 25,000 needed for Elite Silver. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • No transfers between members. Miles cannot be pooled with another KrisFlyer or PPS Club member, and converted card points cannot be routed to someone else's account. [2]
  • Non-flight Elite miles are capped. Kris+, KrisShop and Pelago activity produces Elite miles subject to the 20% cap [3]; KrisShop purchases part-paid with miles and cash can additionally earn KrisFlyer miles on the card-paid portion of the nett purchase amount, at 1.5 KrisFlyer miles per S$1 [2].
  • KrisShop miles are final. KrisFlyer miles used for KrisShop purchases are non-refundable and non-exchangeable, including when a member later wants to change how much of the payment was made in miles. [2]
  • vRooms cancellations. Cancellations are handled on krisflyervrooms.com subject to the booking's terms, with miles refunded after six to eight weeks where applicable; miles that expired before the cancellation are not refunded. [2]
  • Bought miles. A member must already hold at least half the miles needed for the award before buying the rest, and the purchase price is not refundable. [2]
  • Time limits on claims. Pre-enrolment flights count only if flown within 30 days before joining, and partner credits are treated as missing after eight weeks. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Can I send converted credit card points to a family member's KrisFlyer account?

No. Where the member is the principal credit or charge cardholder, converted points can only be credited to that member's own KrisFlyer or PPS Club account. [2]

How long do partner miles take to appear in a KrisFlyer account?

Normally two to four weeks after an airline partner flight, or six to eight weeks after using a non-airline partner's services; after more than eight weeks a missing miles claim can be filed. [2]

Do Kris+ and Pelago purchases earn miles I can redeem?

From 1 September 2025 they earn Elite miles at 1 mile per S$1 spent, and these Elite miles build status; non-flight Elite miles are capped at 20% of the total needed. [3]

Can I earn KrisFlyer miles on a hotel booked through KrisFlyer vRooms?

No KrisFlyer miles are earned on any KrisFlyer vRooms booking, and such stays are generally not eligible for points at most major hotel loyalty programmes. [2]
