How to check Hong Kong visa and entry requirements

Hong Kong visa and entry requirements are the rules the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic of China applies to people arriving for a visit: many nationalities may enter without a visa for a fixed period, from 7 days for nationalities not otherwise listed up to 180 days for British citizens, while others must hold a visit visa or entry permit obtained before travel. [1] Hong Kong is part of the People's Republic of China but is a Special Administrative Region with its own immigration controls. [5]

Key takeaways

  • Whether you need a visa or entry permit for a visit depends on your nationality and the type of travel document you hold. [1]
  • The Immigration Department's nationality table lists visa-free visit periods from 7 days for nationalities not otherwise listed to 180 days for British citizens. [1]
  • Visitors must hold adequate funds for their stay and, unless in transit to the Chinese Mainland or Macao, onward or return tickets. [1]
  • Meeting every published requirement does not guarantee admission: the HKSAR immigration authorities may refuse permission to land. [1]

Who needs a Hong Kong visa or entry permit?

No visa or entry permit is required for any purpose if you hold a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport, a Hong Kong Re-entry Permit (for entry from the Chinese Mainland and the Macao Special Administrative Region only), a Hong Kong Seaman's Identity Book, or a Hong Kong Document of Identity for Visa Purposes that is valid or whose holder's limit of stay has not expired. [1] The same applies to a Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card and to a travel document carrying an endorsement that the holder's eligibility for a permanent identity card has been verified or that the holder has the right to land in Hong Kong. [1]

Everyone else falls under the visitor rules, and whether a trip needs a visa or entry permit depends on nationality and on the type of travel document held. [1] A visa or entry permit is required to work, study, establish or join in any business, or take up residence in Hong Kong; arriving for those purposes without one means risking refusal of admission on arrival. [1] Visitors are not allowed by law to take up employment, paid or unpaid, to establish or join in a business, or to enter school as a student, and except in the most unusual circumstances they cannot change their immigration status after arrival. [1]

How long can I stay in Hong Kong without a visa?

The length of a visa-free visit is set by nationality and travel document, and the Immigration Department publishes the period for each country or territory it lists. [1] The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, writing for people travelling on a full British citizen passport from the UK, says such visitors can visit Hong Kong for up to 6 months without a visa. [5] The examples below show how wide the range is. [1]

Anyone who wants to stay longer than the visa-free period allowed must apply for a visa or entry permit before travelling to Hong Kong. [1]

How do you apply for a visit visa or entry permit?

Applications can be made at the nearest Chinese diplomatic and consular mission, except that visit visa applications from Indian nationals must be submitted to the HKSAR Immigration Department directly. [1] Applications may also go to the Immigration Department by post or through a local sponsor. [1] To shorten processing, the application form and supporting documents can be sent by fax first to (852) 2824 1133, but the original completed form and the required photographs must follow by air mail immediately, because a visa or entry permit is issued only on receipt of an original, properly completed application form. [1] Chinese residents of Taiwan submit entry permit applications through one of the authorised airlines. [1] Some Chinese diplomatic and consular missions handle Hong Kong visa applications from holders of foreign ordinary passports through a "Chinese Visa Application Service Center", and applicants can confirm the arrangement with the nearest mission. [1]

What are the transit rules and arrival conditions?

Visitors must have adequate funds to cover the duration of their stay without working and, unless they are in transit to the Chinese Mainland or the Macao Special Administrative Region, must hold onward or return tickets. [1] Transit is not visa-free for every nationality: the Immigration Department marks certain countries so that all their nationals need a valid HKSAR visa for any purpose, including remaining on the airside, and that group includes Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria and Syria. [1] A second group, apart from holders of diplomatic and official passports, needs a visa for any purpose too, including airside transit; Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda and Sri Lanka appear in that group. [1] For arrivals covered by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office guidance, the passport must be valid for at least one month after the date the traveller plans to leave Hong Kong. [5] Entry is refused to anyone without a valid travel document or anyone trying to use a passport reported lost or stolen. [5] Connections by air are covered in more detail in the airport transit visa guide and the China 240-hour visa-free transit guide.

Exceptions and limits

  • No automatic right to enter. The Immigration Department states that travellers should not assume automatic entry even when every requirement is met, and that the authorities may refuse any person permission to land except those covered by the no-visa document list. [1]
  • Not a full statement of the law. The published requirements cannot be taken as a full statement of the law governing immigration, and individual cases should be raised with a Chinese diplomatic or consular mission or the Immigration Department. [1]
  • Dates can move. The Immigration Department says its information on visitor requirements was updated in August 2026 and that there may be subsequent changes. [1]
  • British National (Overseas) passports. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says the Hong Kong authorities no longer accept BN(O) passports for immigration clearance and do not recognise them as valid proof of identity. [5]
  • Health and customs conditions. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk, and e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products and related devices may not be brought in; from 30 April 2026 possession of such products in a public place is illegal, although travellers transiting without passing through immigration control are exempt from those restrictions. [5]
  • Outside this page. Mainland China visa rules, Macao entry rules and Hong Kong residence permission are not covered here; passport checks are summarised in passport validity and entry check. [1]
