JR regional passes compared: Kansai Area vs WIDE Area
JR regional passes are rail passes that give unlimited rides on a JR company’s lines in one part of Japan for a set number of consecutive days. The two JR West passes compared here are the Kansai Area Pass, whose sales ended on 30 September 2026, and the five-day Kansai WIDE Area Pass, which adds reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. [6] [7] The nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS works the other way round: it is offered jointly by the six JR Group companies and covers JR trains from Hokkaido to Kyushu. [4]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- The Kansai Area Pass covers unlimited rides in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, Himeji, Wakayama and Otsu, including reserved seats on the Kansai-airport Express HARUKA, but JR West says sales ended on 30 September 2026 and passes bought by then stay valid for their stated period. [6]
- The Kansai WIDE Area Pass costs 12,000 yen for adults and 6,000 yen for children for five consecutive days, and adds reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. [7]
- Both JR West passes are sold to travellers who hold a passport issued by a foreign government and enter Japan as a Temporary Visitor. [6] [7]
- The nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS gives unlimited rides on JR trains all over Japan, and reserved seats can be booked in advance only when the pass is bought on the official website. [4]
What does each pass cover?
The three passes sit at different sizes. The JAPAN RAIL PASS is a single ticket offered jointly by the six JR Group companies, covering JR lines that total over 19,000 km from Hokkaido to Kyushu, including Shinkansen bullet trains and limited express trains. [4] Purchasers can also buy a special ticket for the fastest NOZOMI and MIZUHO trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. [4]
| Pass | Where it is valid | Trains included |
|---|---|---|
| JAPAN RAIL PASS | JR lines across Japan, from Hokkaido to Kyushu [4] | Shinkansen and limited express trains, with reserved seats you can book yourself [4] |
| Kansai Area Pass | Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, Himeji, Wakayama and Otsu, plus the Kansai-airport Express HARUKA [6] | Reserved seats on HARUKA; Special Rapid, Rapid and Local trains on JR-West conventional lines; WEST JAPAN JR BUS route buses in the valid area, but not expressway buses [6] |
| Kansai WIDE Area Pass | Kansai and on to Okayama, Takamatsu, Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Tottori and Shirahama [7] | Reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka to Okayama) and on limited expresses such as HARUKA, KUROSHIO, KONOTORI and SUPER HAKUTO; Special Rapid, Rapid and Local trains on JR-West and JR-Shikoku conventional lines [7] |
The Kansai Area Pass excludes the Shinkansen and the reserved and non-reserved seats of express trains other than HARUKA, and it does not cover paid seating services such as A Seat. [6] A Green Car seat needs a separate First Class ticket plus the relevant express ticket. [6] The Kansai WIDE Area Pass stops at Okayama on the Sanyo Shinkansen: the Tokaido Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo, the Sanyo Shinkansen from Okayama to Hakata and the Kyushu Shinkansen from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo are all outside it. [7] On trains that are entirely reserved, the WIDE pass does not offer non-reserved seating. [7] For the nationwide pass in more detail, see the JAPAN RAIL PASS guide.
Who can buy a JR West regional pass?
JR West sets two conditions for both passes: the user must hold a passport issued by a foreign government, and must be entering Japan as a Temporary Visitor, the status of residence defined under Japanese immigration law. [6] [7] The Kansai Area and Kansai WIDE Area Pass pages state that Japanese nationals cannot use the pass, including Japanese nationals who hold permanent residence rights abroad. [6] [7]
An individual cannot buy or exchange more than one of the same ticket for the same period of use, and a passport must be presented to receive the pass. [6] [7] While travelling, the pass is valid only for the person named on it and the passport must be shown if JR staff ask for it. [6] [7] These conditions are JR West’s own; they are not a statement about the eligibility rules of other JR Group passes. [6] [7]
What do the JR West passes cost and how long do they last?
Adult fares apply from age 12 and child fares from 6 to 11, measured when the exchange order is issued or the pass is purchased. [6] [7] The prices below are the published fares, which the JR West pages state are current as of 1 August 2024 and subject to change. [6] [7]
| Pass | Validity | Adult | Child |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kansai Area Pass | 1 day | 2,800 yen | 1,400 yen |
| 2 days | 4,800 yen | 2,400 yen | |
| 3 days | 5,800 yen | 2,900 yen | |
| 4 days | 7,000 yen | 3,500 yen | |
| Kansai WIDE Area Pass | 5 days | 12,000 yen | 6,000 yen |
Both passes are valid for consecutive days and can be used all year round. [6] [7] Validity runs from 0:00 on the start day to 24:00 on the last day, all times Japan Standard Time; if the period ends while you are on a train on the last day, the pass still covers the fare until the following day as long as you do not leave the station, and covers ticket fees as long as you do not leave the train. [6] [7]
A pass bought from a travel agency in Japan can be purchased up to one month before the first day of use, and reservations through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION open one month before boarding, from 10:00 JST on the same day of the preceding month. [6] [7] An exchange order bought outside Japan must be exchanged within three months of issue. [6] [7] For the Kansai WIDE Area Pass, JR West states that sales prices follow the date of purchase rather than the date of exchange or use. [7]
How do seat reservations work on each pass?
On the JAPAN RAIL PASS, reserved seats can be booked in advance only when the pass is purchased on the official website, and holders can book their own reserved seats instead of queueing at a ticket office. [4]
The Kansai Area Pass may be used for reserved seating on the Kansai-airport Express HARUKA up to two times. [6] Seats must be reserved before boarding, since reserved seating cannot be arranged on the train; once the two-use maximum is reached, or to sit in a reserved seat after boarding, a non-discounted limited express reserved seat ticket has to be bought separately. [6] Reserved seat tickets can be booked at a green ticket-vending machine or a station ticket office. [6]
The Kansai WIDE Area Pass covers reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama and on limited expresses such as HARUKA, KUROSHIO, KONOTORI and SUPER HAKUTO, and seats must be reserved before boarding. [7] Seat reservations are available online for passes bought through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, and for passes with unlimited seat reservations the seats from the seventh booking onwards must be reserved at a JR ticket office. [7] Holders of a pass that includes a reserved seat on the Sanyo Shinkansen can use the pass plus a section ticket for a bag with sides totalling more than 160 cm but less than 250 cm, while holders of a non-reserved pass need a separate Unlimited Ride Oversized Baggage Ticket for that baggage. [7] More detail is in the JR pass seat reservation guide.
What are the limits and exceptions?
- Sales status. JR West marks the Kansai Area Pass as having ended sales as of 30 September 2026; passes purchased by that date remain valid throughout the specified validity period. [6]
- No changes after exchange. The starting date, duration and pass type cannot be changed once the exchange order has been exchanged, and validity periods are not extended even when train services are unavailable or delayed. [6] [7]
- Refunds. A refund is the sale price minus a handling fee of 10%, with a minimum of 220 yen per pass; no refund is given after a pass starts to be used or expires, or because of service suspensions or delays. [6] [7] An exchange order that was never exchanged is refunded by the overseas travel agency that sold it, with a separate handling fee. [6] [7]
- Extra requirements for a Kansai Area refund. The pass and the vouchers for Kyoto City Subway, Keihan Railway and Hankyu Railway, four items in all, are needed, and an exchanged pass can only be refunded at the ticket counters of JR West stations. [6] Those three railway vouchers are provided when the Kansai Area Pass is purchased or received. [6]
- Payment and collection. Passes bought through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION must be paid for by credit card, and virtual and numberless credit cards cannot be used; a passport with an IC chip is needed to receive a pass from a ticket vending machine, so travellers without one must collect it at a ticket office. [6] [7]
- Loss and misuse. Lost or stolen passes cannot be reissued. [6] [7]
- Deciding whether a pass pays. Passes are fixed bundles of unlimited travel rather than pay-as-you-go tickets, so the choice depends on how much you ride within the validity period; see rail pass or point-to-point. [6] [7]
