How to validate a rail ticket

Rail ticket validation is the check that the ticket or pass you hold actually covers the journey you are making, and what counts as a valid ticket is defined by the company that sells it rather than by one rule shared across countries. SNCF Connect keeps tickets, discount and loyalty cards in the customer account and publishes a "Your proof of travel" topic, while Swiss Federal Railways sells route tickets, day passes and multi-day passes on separate terms. [2] [8]

Key takeaways

  • Your ticket sits inside the seller's own system: SNCF Connect holds tickets, discount and loyalty cards in the customer account and lists "Your proof of travel" among its help topics. [2]
  • SBB sells route-based point-to-point tickets, day passes, travelcards and multi-day passes, including a Swiss Travel Pass in 3, 4, 6, 8 and 15 day versions. [8]
  • A pass does not automatically cover every train: JAPAN RAIL PASS holders can buy a separate special ticket for the NOZOMI and MIZUHO trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. [6]
  • Reserved seats on the JAPAN RAIL PASS can be booked in advance only when the pass is bought on the official website. [6]

What does validating a rail ticket involve?

SNCF Connect sells travel across several carriers, including TGV INOUI, Eurostar, TGV Lyria, OUIGO, TER and Intercités, and its help area is organised around the ticket rather than the destination. [2] The topics it publishes include "Your tickets", "Your proof of travel", "Exchange or cancel" and "Manage your delay", which places proof of travel alongside ticket management as a standard part of the journey. [2] SNCF Connect also offers a hold that secures a seat and fare for a limited time with no immediate payment. [2]

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) sells several different things through one shop: point-to-point tickets for outward and return journeys and City-Tickets, supersaver tickets, regional transport tickets, tickets for European travel, day passes, class upgrades, seat reservations and group tickets. [8] Because those are separate products, what a traveller holds at the station may be a route ticket, a day pass, a travelcard or a reservation rather than a single document for a single journey. [8] Some day passes even carry a time condition in their own name, such as the ZVV 9-o'clock Day Pass and the Ostwind Day Pass from 9 o'clock. [8]

Which passes carry their own conditions?

Swiss Travel Pass. The standard version is sold in 3, 4, 6, 8 and 15 day versions, while the Swiss Travel Pass Flex is sold as 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 days in 1 month. [8] SBB also sells travelcards on different cycles: the GA Travelcard is offered with yearly invoicing, with monthly invoicing and as a 1-month version, and the Half Fare Travelcard is listed alongside a Half Fare Travelcard PLUS. [8] For visitors from abroad, the Swiss Half Fare Card is grouped under a "Travel at half price" heading. [8]

JAPAN RAIL PASS. The pass is a ticket offered jointly by the six JR Group companies and allows unlimited rides on JR trains across a network of more than 19,000 km. [6] Two conditions sit alongside it. Reserved seats can be booked in advance only when the pass is purchased on the official website [6], and use of the fastest NOZOMI and MIZUHO services on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines requires a special ticket that pass purchasers can buy separately [6]. Up to 12 NOZOMI trains run between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka each hour. [6]

Where do you check the rule for your ticket?

Both sellers publish their own ticket help. SNCF Connect's help area carries "Your tickets" and "Your proof of travel" and states that its advisers answer seven days a week. [2] SBB's Help & contact area lists "Ticket refunds", "Delay compensation", "Questions on tickets Switzerland/Europe" and "Questions on the SwissPass". [8] Those pages are where the conditions attached to a particular product are set out, which is why the version of the ticket matters as much as the route. [2] [8]

What is not included in the ticket

  • Extra items sold separately. SBB lists Day Pass Children, Day Pass Dogs, Bike Day Pass, group tickets, class upgrades and seat reservations as products in their own right alongside standard tickets. [8]
  • Reservations. Seat reservations in Switzerland are a distinct item from the ticket itself. [8]
  • Where you bought the pass. Advance booking of reserved seats with the JAPAN RAIL PASS is available only to travellers who bought the pass on the official website. [6]
  • Train type. Pass holders need a separate special ticket to use the NOZOMI and MIZUHO trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. [6]
  • Operator and ticket type. The conditions above apply to the named products sold by SNCF Connect, the JR Group and SBB, not to rail travel generally. [2] [6] [8]

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a seat reservation as well as a ticket?

In Switzerland, seat reservations are sold as a separate product from tickets and travelcards. [8] JAPAN RAIL PASS holders can book reserved seats in advance, but only if the pass was bought on the official website. [6]

How long is a Swiss Travel Pass valid?

The standard Swiss Travel Pass is sold in 3, 4, 6, 8 and 15 day versions. [8] The Flex version is sold as 3, 4, 6, 8 or 15 days in 1 month. [8]

Can I use a JAPAN RAIL PASS on the fastest Shinkansen trains?

NOZOMI and MIZUHO services on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines require a special ticket that pass purchasers can buy in addition to the pass. [6]

Where do I find the conditions for my own ticket?

SNCF Connect publishes ticket topics such as "Your tickets" and "Your proof of travel" [2], and SBB lists ticket questions and refunds in its Help & contact area [8].
