Travel eSIM and roaming: a setup checklist

Choose between your home carrier, a local SIM or a travel eSIM after checking device support, coverage, data validity and the calls or texts you still need on your home number.

Compare three ways to connect

You can keep roaming with your home carrier, buy a local SIM or eSIM, or use a regional travel eSIM. Compare the total price, coverage and phone services you need. Many travel eSIMs are data-only and do not provide a local number or SMS.

Check before buying

  • Device: Confirm eSIM support, carrier unlock status, network compatibility and any model or region restrictions.
  • Coverage: Check every country on the trip, remote-area coverage and local network partners.
  • Plan: Compare data allowance, validity period, hotspot use, speed limits, top-ups and when the timer begins.
  • Phone number: If you need bank codes, calls or texts, check whether the home line can stay active and what roaming fees may apply.
  • Activation: Learn whether installation requires Wi-Fi, a QR code, an app or identification. Save setup instructions and support contacts.

Watch for charges on a dual-SIM phone

Apple says supported iPhones can use a home line and travel eSIM while abroad. If both lines stay on, the home line may still incur roaming charges. Ask your home carrier how voice, texts and data are billed, and check which line is selected for mobile data after arrival.

Installing the plan before departure may make setup easier, but some plans start their validity only when they connect in the destination. Follow the provider's activation instructions. When home, check that your primary line is on and disable travel lines you no longer need.

Keep an offline backup

Save boarding passes, hotel addresses, transport directions, booking references and emergency contacts on the device. An eSIM does not guarantee signal in every station, airport or rural area.
