FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is booking-platform rewards combinability?
Booking-platform rewards combinability is the question of whether reward currency held at an online travel agency — wallet credits, vouchers or member-level discounts — can be used alongside coupons, member rates, add-on purchases or other promotions in the same checkout. It matters because a checkout can display a wallet balance and a reduced rate at once while the rules behind each one still limit how far they stack: Booking.com's Wallet terms, for example, let a member spend Credits and a voucher on the same eligible booking but allow only one voucher per booking. Key takeaways
- Combinability is set by the terms attached to each reward, rate or promotion, so a wallet balance and a discounted rate can both appear at checkout while separate rules still govern how they work together. [5] [6]
- Booking.com allows a member to spend Credits and a voucher on the same eligible booking, but permits only one voucher per booking and does not combine the value of several vouchers. [5]
- Booking.com's Genius page says the Genius discount can, in many cases, be combined with other applicable discounts, offers and deals, with eligibility criteria shown before the member books. [6]
- Hotel programme currency sits outside the wallet: IHG One Rewards Points have no retail value and are not redeemable for cash or any other form of credit [9], and Marriott Bonvoy Points have no cash value and may not be exchanged except as the programme rules permit [8].
What is being combined at a booking-platform checkout?
Several separate things can meet on one checkout page: stored reward currency such as Credits and vouchers, a member-level discount, a promotional code, and add-on purchases attached to the reservation. Each is governed by its own conditions rather than by the single total shown at payment. Booking.com's Wallet terms say the individual criteria attached to a Reward may include time-sensitive restrictions such as offers with expiration dates, platform restrictions such as promotional codes that can only be used in its app, accommodation service restrictions such as offers usable only with specific providers, a minimum spend, and a maximum Reward value. [5]
Rewards are also tied to where the wallet itself is accepted. In general, Booking.com Rewards can only be spent on Travel Experiences that accept Wallet payments; Travel Credits can be spread across different bookings, while a voucher can only be spent on the specific bookings stated in that voucher's terms and conditions. [5]
Some restrictions bite at the level of the reservation type instead of the reward. Booking.com excludes cruises, insurance, public transportation and free options from the Genius programme, and states that additional purchases such as room upgrades for stays, car seats for rental cars and additional luggage for flights do not incur Genius discounts. [5] A Genius option is marked with a blue Genius label on the property or car listing, and the discount is applied automatically without a code. [6]
Which Booking.com Wallet rewards can be combined?
Booking.com's Wallet holds Credits and vouchers, and the rules for spending them together differ by type. [5]
| Combination | Rule |
|---|---|
| Credits plus a voucher, same booking | Both may be spent on the same eligible booking. [5] |
| Travel Credits across bookings | Can be spent across different bookings. [5] |
| A voucher across bookings | Only on the specific bookings stated in the voucher's terms and conditions. [5] |
| Two or more vouchers, same booking | Not allowed; only one voucher per booking and their value cannot be combined. [5] |
| Choosing which reward is spent | Where a member holds several Rewards of a single type, the one with the earliest expiration date is selected by default; later-expiring Credits cannot be chosen first, but the voucher can be chosen. [5] |
If the booking costs less than the Rewards available, the unspent balance stays in the Wallet until expiration unless the individual Reward's terms say otherwise; if it costs more, the remainder must be paid with a different payment method, and failing to do so in time may cancel the booking and return the Rewards to the Wallet under their original terms, including expiry dates. [5] Cash Credits, unlike Travel Credits, can also be transferred to a credit or debit card of certain brands. [5]
Does the Genius discount stack with other offers?
Booking.com answers this directly: in many cases the Genius discount can be combined with other applicable discounts, offers and deals, and eligibility criteria are presented before the member books, so the final price for a booking may reflect several discounts working together rather than the Genius discount alone. [6] Genius discounts are applied to eligible stays and rental cars automatically, with no code required, and they are applied to the price before taxes and fees. [6]
Stacking is therefore conditional rather than guaranteed. Booking.com says a higher Genius level does not necessarily mean a bigger discount, because discount percentages can vary by property and some participating properties may offer the same discount to members at every level, although higher levels still unlock bigger discounts where available and more rewards on select options. [6] Level 1 is unlocked by creating a free account, Level 2 requires five completed bookings within two years, and Level 3 requires fifteen within two years. [6] Where Genius is excluded altogether — cruises, insurance, public transportation, free options and extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats and additional luggage — there is no programme discount to combine. [5] [6]
Can hotel loyalty points be spent at a booking-platform checkout?
Hotel currency is not a payment method inside a travel agency's wallet. IHG One Rewards says Points have no retail value, are not redeemable for cash or any other form of credit, have no value until presented for redemption under its terms, and that members have no ownership interest in accrued Points. [9] Marriott Bonvoy similarly states that Points, Awards and other member benefits have no cash value and may not be sold, bartered, transferred, assigned, exchanged, purchased or otherwise conveyed except as expressly permitted in its Program Rules. [8]
The same separation shapes earning. IHG awards Points for Qualifying Stays booked through IHG channels, directly at the hotel or through Authorized Travel Agents, which it defines as travel booking platforms operating under direct distribution agreements that specifically provide for nights booked through them to be Qualifying Stays; its examples of excluded online travel agents include Expedia.com and booking.com. [9] IHG's list of Non-Qualifying Rates includes online travel agency and third-party channel bookings that are not made through an Authorized Travel Agent, while Qualifying Rates include IHG Member Rates provided on Authorized Travel Agent Platforms. [9]
Where a partner programme is involved, Marriott Bonvoy says members may earn Points or Miles and redeem Points, Awards or other benefits only in accordance with its Program Rules and any applicable Partner Program terms. [8] Marriott also states that specific benefits, amenities, offers, Awards and services may not be available at properties or experiences that participate in the programme in a limited or unique capacity. [8]
Exceptions and limits
- One voucher per booking. Only a single voucher can be spent on each booking, and multiple vouchers cannot be pooled. [5]
- Vouchers are booking-specific. Travel Credits travel across bookings; a voucher is confined to the bookings named in its own terms. [5]
- Expiry and no replacements. The validity of Credits appears in the Rewards & Wallet activity, and lost, stolen or expired Rewards are not replaced. [5]
- Cancellation pulls in the provider's policy. If a Travel Experience paid with Rewards is cancelled, the Service Provider's cancellation policy determines whether money and Rewards are refunded, and unspent Rewards linked to that cancelled booking are deleted from the Wallet. [5]
- Rewards are personal. They cannot be sold, encumbered or transferred, and on an account holder's death the account is closed and pending or available Rewards are cancelled. [5]
- Programme-level exclusions. Genius does not cover cruises, insurance, public transportation or free options, and extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats and additional luggage do not attract Genius discounts. [5] [6]
- Rate eligibility on the hotel side. IHG treats online travel agency and third-party channel bookings as Non-Qualifying Rates unless they come through an Authorized Travel Agent. [9]
Frequently asked questions
Can I use more than one Booking.com voucher on the same booking?
No. Only one voucher can be spent on each booking, and the value of multiple vouchers cannot be combined for spending on any booking. [5]
Can Booking.com Credits and a voucher be used together?
Yes. Both Credits and vouchers may be spent at the same time on any eligible booking. [5]
Can I choose which Credits are spent first?
Not freely. If you hold several Rewards of a single type, the Reward with the earliest expiration date is selected by default at payment confirmation, and later-expiring Credits cannot be chosen first, though you can choose which voucher to spend. [5]
Does a higher Genius level always mean a bigger discount?
No. Booking.com says discount percentages can vary by property and some participating properties may offer the same discount to members at every level, even though higher levels unlock bigger discounts where available. [6]
Can I earn IHG One Rewards points on a booking made through Booking.com?
IHG names booking.com and Expedia.com among the online travel agents excluded from Qualifying Stays, and lists online travel agency and third-party channel bookings as Non-Qualifying Rates unless made through an Authorized Travel Agent. [9]
