FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What are booking-platform rewards on activities?

Booking-platform rewards on activities are the credits, vouchers or discounted member rates that an online travel agency offers on tours, attraction tickets and other experiences booked through its site. Whether a particular activity booking earns anything is decided by the individual programme and, at Booking.com, by the criteria attached to each reward offer rather than by one platform-wide rule. [4]

Key takeaways

  • Booking.com says it may issue Rewards at its sole discretion, subject to its Rewards & Wallet terms and to any Individual Reward Criteria that apply to a given offer. [4]
  • The earning examples the terms give are booking and completing accommodation stays with participating providers, or making a certain number of eligible bookings within a given period; the amount earned depends on each promotional campaign. [4]
  • Genius levels are reached through completed bookings counted for any vertical offered by the programme, and Booking.com may change which booking types count for progression. [4]
  • The reservation types excluded from Genius are named as cruises, insurance, public transportation and free options. [4]

How do rewards on tours and attraction tickets work in general?

A booking-platform reward on an activity is a loyalty benefit — a credit balance, a voucher, a discounted member rate or a points currency — attached to an experience booked through an online travel agency (OTA), such as a guided tour, a museum ticket or a theme-park pass. It matters because two identical tickets at the same headline price can return different value depending on where they are bought and which programme the buyer belongs to.

The platform, not the operator of the attraction, usually writes the rules. It decides which products are eligible, whether earning is measured in money spent or in a number of completed bookings, and whether the benefit arrives as a spendable balance, a discount or a status tier. Because those rules are drafted around product categories, the same traveller can earn on a hotel night and earn nothing on a museum ticket bought in the same session — the category, not the amount spent, is often what decides. Rewards of this kind can also be discretionary: a platform may reserve the right to change earning criteria, let balances expire, or withdraw a reward obtained outside the rules.

Booking.com runs two separate reward mechanisms on the same platform, and its customer terms of service, updated 25 August 2025, describe each in its own section. [4]

How does Booking.com's Rewards & Wallet treat activity bookings?

Booking.com's terms cover accommodation, flights, attractions, car rentals, transport and cruises in one document, with a general section for all travel experiences and a specific section for attractions that applies where the two are inconsistent. [4] When a traveller books an accommodation, flight or attraction, Booking.com B.V. is responsible for the platform but not for the travel experience itself, which stays the provider's responsibility. [4]

Rewards are dealt with in a section headed "Rewards, Credits & Wallet". Booking.com states that it may issue Rewards at its sole discretion, subject to those terms and to any Individual Reward Criteria that apply. [4] The earning routes it gives as examples are booking and completing accommodation stays with participating providers, or making a certain number of eligible bookings within a given time period, and it notes that the amount or quantity of Rewards earned depends on each promotional campaign. [4]

The Individual Reward Criteria are where product-level limits sit. Booking.com says those criteria may include, but are not limited to, time-sensitive restrictions such as offers with expiry dates, platform restrictions such as promotional codes usable only in the app, accommodation service restrictions such as offers usable only with specific providers, a minimum spend, and a maximum reward value. [4] Eligibility for an activity or attraction booking is therefore settled by the criteria attached to that particular offer. [4]

Do activity bookings count towards Booking.com Genius levels?

Genius is a separate programme. A Genius rate is a discounted rate offered by participating service providers or funded by Booking.com for certain products and services, available to members of the Booking.com Genius programme, which has no membership fee and is joined by creating an account. [4] Membership and rates are non-transferable, and membership is linked to a specific account. [4]

Genius levels are based on the number of completed bookings made within a given period for any vertical offered by the programme, and each level provides different travel rewards. [4]

Genius levels as stated in the customer terms of service
Genius levelRequirement
Level 2Complete 5 bookings within 2 years [4]
Level 3Complete 15 bookings within 2 years [4]

Two limits are spelled out. First, certain reservation types are excluded from Genius: cruises, insurance, public transportation and free options; and additional purchases — room upgrades for stays, car seats for rental cars and additional luggage for flights — do not incur Genius discounts. [4] Second, Booking.com may change any feature of the Genius programme, including membership levels, eligible booking types for progression and the way the programme is structured. [4]

How are activity rewards spent, and what happens on cancellation?

Rewards sit in a Wallet created with a verified account, and the Wallet shows when Rewards were earned, when they were awarded and when they will expire. [4] Spending is limited by product: in general all Rewards can only be spent on travel experiences that accept Wallet payments. [4] Travel Credits can be spent across different bookings, but a voucher can only be used on the bookings named in its own terms, and only one voucher can be spent per booking. [4] If a booking costs less than the Rewards available, the unspent balance stays in the Wallet until it expires, unless the individual Reward's terms say otherwise. [4]

Cancellation affects activity rewards in two ways. If a travel experience paid for with Rewards is cancelled, the service provider's cancellation policy determines whether money and Rewards are refunded, and Booking.com's customer service team can refund any Rewards the traveller is entitled to. [4] Where a Reward was issued because of a booking, any associated Rewards that have not been spent are deleted from the Wallet if that travel experience is cancelled. [4]

Exceptions and limits

  • Programme change. Booking.com may change, suspend or end any aspect of the Wallet or Rewards programme, including its terms, eligibility criteria and which Rewards it provides, with reasonable efforts to give prior notice. [4] If it stops providing the Wallet, Rewards that have not expired stay valid for another 12 months. [4]
  • No transfers. Rewards cannot be sold, encumbered or transferred to a third party, and on the death of an account holder the account is closed and any pending or available Rewards are cancelled. [4]
  • Missing, lost and expired Rewards. A Reward that should have been received must be claimed within 12 months of the qualifying act, with supporting documentation, or the member becomes ineligible automatically; lost, stolen or expired Rewards are not replaced. [4]
  • Abuse. Booking.com may cancel any Reward obtained by fraud or misuse, and may investigate suspected fraud, misuse or abuse of Genius, which may result in a cancelled membership and lost rewards. [4]
  • Category-specific terms. The specific terms for attractions apply alongside the general terms and take precedence where they differ. [4]

Frequently asked questions

Do Booking.com Rewards on activities follow the same rules as rewards on stays?

Both sit under the same Rewards & Wallet section, but eligibility is governed by the Individual Reward Criteria for each offer, and the earning example Booking.com gives is completing accommodation stays with participating providers. [4]

Which bookings are excluded from Booking.com Genius?

The terms name cruises, insurance, public transportation and free options as excluded reservation types, and additional purchases such as room upgrades, car seats and additional luggage do not incur Genius discounts. [4]

Can Booking.com change which bookings count towards Genius levels?

Yes. Booking.com may change any feature of the programme, expressly including membership levels and eligible booking types for progression. [4]

What happens to my rewards if an activity booking is cancelled?

The service provider's cancellation policy decides whether money and Rewards are returned, and unspent Rewards issued because of that booking are deleted from the Wallet. [4]

Do Booking.com Rewards expire?

The Wallet shows when each Reward will expire, Booking.com may notify members of Rewards expiring soon by email or push notification, and expired Rewards are not replaced. [4]
