FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What are booking-platform rewards redemption fees?
Booking-platform rewards redemption fees are the money charges that a loyalty balance does not absorb when it is spent on a travel booking: taxes, supplier charges and card costs that stay payable, plus the rules that decide the order in which a discount or a reward comes off a price. At Booking.com, the Genius loyalty programme is free to join and its discounts are applied to the price before taxes and fees, so taxes and fees are still calculated on the stay. [6] [7]

Key takeaways
- Booking.com runs a free loyalty programme, Genius, which gives percentage discounts, and a Rewards, Credits & Wallet system that holds Credits and vouchers for spending on eligible bookings. [6] [7]
- Genius discounts on stays are applied to the price before taxes and fees, and on rental cars to the cost of the car only. [7]
- Wallet rewards offset the cost of an eligible booking; any shortfall must be paid with a different payment method, or the booking can be cancelled and the rewards returned to the Wallet. [6]
- Only one voucher can be spent per booking, and the value of several vouchers cannot be combined. [6]
How do Booking.com Wallet rewards come off a booking?
Booking.com issues rewards at its sole discretion, subject to the Rewards, Credits & Wallet section of its customer terms and to any Individual Reward Criteria that apply. [6] Rewards are typically earned by booking and completing accommodation stays with participating Service Providers or by making a certain number of eligible bookings in a set period, and the amount earned depends on each promotional campaign. [6]
Only Credits and vouchers are paid into the Wallet. [6] Travel Credits can be spread across different bookings, vouchers can be spent only on the specific bookings named in each voucher's terms, and Cash Credits can either be spent like Travel Credits or transferred to a credit or debit card of certain brands. [6] A member can spend any amount of Travel Credits and/or Cash Credits to offset the cost of an eligible booking on participating platforms, and rewards can only be spent on travel experiences that accept Wallet payments. [6]
Where a booking costs more than the rewards held, the difference must be paid with a different payment method. [6] Failing to pay in time may result in the booking being cancelled and the rewards returned to the Wallet under their original terms, including expiration dates. [6] Where a booking costs less, unspent rewards stay in the Wallet until they expire, unless an individual reward's terms say otherwise. [6]
For a pay-later accommodation booking paid with Wallet rewards, Booking.com charges the Wallet for the selected rewards at booking confirmation, so the rewards are spent immediately, while the remaining amount is charged under the booking's payment policy. [6]
Which charges does a Genius discount apply to?
Genius is Booking.com's free loyalty programme, and a Genius rate is a discounted rate offered by participating Service Providers or funded by Booking.com for certain products and services. [6] Discounts and rewards are applied automatically to eligible stays and rental cars, with no codes needed. [7]
| Booking type | What the discount applies to |
|---|---|
| Stays | Applied to the price before taxes and fees [7] |
| Rental cars | Applies to the cost of the car only [7] |
| Extra purchases such as room upgrades, car seats for rental cars and additional luggage for flights | No Genius discount [6] [7] |
| Cruises, insurance, public transport and free options (the Genius page also lists ride hail) | Excluded from the Genius programme [6] [7] |
In many cases a Genius discount can be combined with other applicable discounts, offers and deals, so the final price may reflect several discounts working together rather than the Genius discount alone. [7] A higher Genius level does not always mean a bigger discount, because discount percentages can vary by property and some participating properties offer the same discount to members at every level. [7]
Membership and rates are non-transferable, and membership is linked to a specific account and may also be tied to particular campaigns or incentives. [6]
What can still be payable after rewards?
Booking.com describes the guest's payment obligation as the cost of the travel experience, including any charges and taxes that may apply. [6] Booking.com B.V. provides and is responsible for the platform but is not a party to the terms between the guest and the Service Provider, who is solely responsible for the travel experience. [6]
- Cancellation and no-show charges. Any cancellation or no-show fee, and any refund, depends on the Service Provider's own cancellation policy, and that policy also decides whether money and/or rewards are refunded. [6]
- Upfront payments. Some Service Providers require an upfront payment that may be taken or pre-authorised at booking and may be non-refundable, under a policy set out during the booking process. [6]
- Currency costs. Where the currency chosen on the platform differs from the Service Provider's currency, Booking.com may offer to charge in the guest's own currency, any fee for that service is expressed as a percentage over European Central Bank rates, and the card issuer may also charge a foreign transaction fee. [6]
- Reward conditions. Individual Reward Criteria may set a minimum spend, a maximum reward value, time limits and platform or Service Provider restrictions on where a reward can be used. [6]
Limits and exceptions
- Credits and vouchers can be spent together on the same eligible booking, but only one voucher may be used and multiple vouchers cannot be combined. [6]
- If a member holds several rewards of one type, the reward with the earliest expiration date is selected by default at payment; later-expiring Credits cannot be spent first, though the member may choose which voucher to spend first. [6]
- Lost, stolen or expired rewards are not replaced, and a member who believes a reward is missing must contact Customer Service within 12 months of the qualifying action or lose the reward. [6]
- If a travel experience paid with rewards is cancelled, any unspent rewards issued because of that booking are deleted from the Wallet. [6]
- Rewards cannot be sold, encumbered or transferred, and when an account holder dies the account is closed and any pending or available rewards are cancelled. [6]
- Booking.com may cancel rewards obtained through fraud or misuse, suspend or cancel a Wallet for breaking the rules, and change, suspend or end any aspect of the Wallet or rewards programme; if the Wallet service stops, unexpired rewards remain valid for another 12 months. [6]
- Genius membership may be cancelled and earned rewards lost if Booking.com finds fraud, misuse or abuse, and any feature of the programme, including levels and eligible booking types, may change. [6] Once a level is unlocked, members are not demoted to lower levels. [7]
Frequently asked questions
How much of a Booking.com booking can rewards cover?
A member can spend any amount of Travel Credits and/or Cash Credits to offset the cost of an eligible booking; if the booking costs more than the balance, the remainder is paid with a different payment method. [6]
Can two vouchers be used on one booking?
No. Only one voucher can be spent on each booking and the value of multiple vouchers cannot be combined, although Credits and a voucher can be used on the same booking. [6]
Are Genius discounts applied before taxes and fees?
Yes. Genius discounts on stays are applied to the price before taxes and fees, and rental-car discounts apply to the cost of the car only. [7]
What happens to rewards if the booking is cancelled?
The Service Provider's cancellation policy decides whether money and/or rewards are refunded, and unspent rewards issued for a cancelled travel experience are removed from the Wallet. [6]
Is there a fee to join Booking.com Genius?
No. Booking.com says there are no membership fees and the programme is free to join with an account. [6] [7]
