FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is an e-passport (biometric passport)?

An e-passport (biometric passport) is a passport booklet that carries an embedded electronic chip in addition to its printed data page. The clearance options at a border are a separate matter: Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority lists automated lanes at the passenger halls as one of several clearance options [7], and UK guidance says an identity document is checked on arrival and that, depending on nationality, a visa or electronic travel authorisation may also be needed [2].

Key takeaways

  • An identity document is checked when you arrive at a UK port or airport and should be valid for the whole of your stay, and travellers of some nationalities also need a visa or an electronic travel authorisation. [2]
  • Automated clearance is listed as one option among several: Singapore's border authority sets out automated lanes in the passenger halls, multi-modal biometric clearance, biometric identification of motorbikes, dual-channel baggage clearance and QR code clearance at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints as separate items. [7]
  • Document-validity questions are answered by passport issuers as well as by destinations: Canada's passport service tells holders to check how long their passport must be valid for the country they are visiting. [6]

What an e-passport is

An e-passport is a passport booklet that carries an embedded electronic chip alongside its printed pages. Biometric passport, chip passport and electronic passport are other names for the same kind of document.

Canada's passport service lists a page on the design and security features of the new Canadian passport among its passport services. [6]

Clearance options at the border

Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) sets out its clearance options on a single page: automated lanes at the passenger halls, immigration clearance with multi-modal biometrics, biometric identification of motorbikes (BIKES), baggage clearance under the dual-channel system, and use of a QR code for immigration clearance at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. [7] The page is addressed to travellers arriving at or departing from Singapore and points them to what to expect when they reach an ICA checkpoint; it carries a last-updated date of 1 August 2025. [7]

In the United Kingdom, an identity document such as a passport or identity card is checked on arrival at a UK port or airport to make sure the traveller is allowed to come into the country, and it should be valid for the whole of the stay. [2] Depending on nationality, a visa or an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) may also be needed to come into or travel through the UK. [2] UK guidance also links to the Registered Traveller service, described as faster entry through the UK border. [2]

Where the clearance and entry rules are set out

For Singapore, ICA's clearance-procedure page carries the list of options described above and a last-updated date of 1 August 2025. [7] For the United Kingdom, GOV.UK's entering-the-UK guide sets out the document check and explains visa and ETA requirements by nationality. [2]

Passport validity is answered partly by the destination. Canada's passport service tells travellers to check travel advisories and how long their passport needs to be valid for the country they are visiting [6], while UK guidance, written for people entering the UK, says the document should be valid for the whole of the stay. [2] Check the destination authority's page for the current rules rather than relying on a summary written for another purpose.

Exceptions and limits

  • An e-passport is not an entry permission. Some nationalities need a visa or an ETA to come into or travel through the UK, in addition to an identity document. [2] See entry permission types and the UK ETA travel authorisation.
  • Validity covers the whole stay. The identity document checked on arrival in the UK should be valid for the whole of the stay, not only for the date of arrival. [2]
  • Nationality rules can be stricter. Canada requires a valid Canadian passport to board a flight to Canada for travellers who hold Canadian citizenship alongside another nationality. [6]
  • Different checkpoints, different options. ICA lists automated lanes at the passenger halls and QR code immigration clearance at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints as separate options on the same page, alongside multi-modal biometric clearance and other procedures. [7]
  • Registered Traveller. UK guidance also links to the Registered Traveller service, described as faster entry through the UK border. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Does holding an e-passport mean I can use an automated lane?

Clearance options belong to the border authority. Singapore's ICA lists automated lanes at the passenger halls as one of several options on its checkpoint page. [7]

Does an e-passport change whether I need a visa or ETA?

UK guidance says that, depending on nationality, a visa or electronic travel authorisation may be needed to come into or travel through the UK, alongside the identity document checked on arrival. [2]

How long must my passport be valid for?

It depends on the destination. Canada's passport service tells travellers to check how long their passport must be valid for the country they are visiting, [6] while UK guidance says the document should be valid for the whole of the stay. [2]
