FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is foreign-currency card earning?
Foreign-currency card earning is the bonus rate of points, miles or cashback that a card pays when a purchase is made in a currency other than the card's billing currency, or with a merchant outside the cardholder's home market. The rate is set card by card rather than by a single market-wide rule: on UOB's Singapore card page, the UOB PRVI Miles Card lists 3 miles per S$1 on regional spend in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam against 1.4 miles per S$1 on local spend. Key takeaways
- "Overseas" is defined card by card: on UOB's Singapore page one card tiers by a group of four countries, one by merchant brands, and one by a chosen rewards category. [2]
- A fee waiver and a bonus earning rate are separate benefits, even when one card advertises both. [2]
- Earning often arrives as the bank's own rewards currency — UNI$ at UOB, Reward points at HSBC — which is later turned into airline miles. [2] [3]
How does foreign-currency card earning work?
Every card account has a billing currency. When a purchase is made abroad or in another currency, the issuer has to decide whether that transaction deserves a different earning rate from everyday domestic spending. Issuers pick different markers for the decision: the country where the merchant is located, the currency the transaction is billed in, or the merchant's category or brand. Because the marker varies, "overseas spend" on one card need not cover the same transactions as "overseas spend" on another, and a bonus that applies to one product does not carry across to the rest of the market.
On UOB's Singapore card page the markers plainly differ by product. The UOB PRVI Miles Card puts its top tier on regional spend in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, a middle tier on other overseas spend, and its lowest rate on local spend. [2] The KrisFlyer UOB Debit Card instead pays 1 KrisFlyer mile per S$1 on Singapore Airlines, Scoot, KrisShop and Kris+ purchases and 0.4 KrisFlyer miles per S$1 on all other spend. [2] The UOB Lady's Credit Card pays up to 25X UNI$ for every S$5 spent (10 miles per S$1) on a preferred rewards category and UNI$1 per S$5 spent (0.4 miles per S$1) on other purchases. [2]
The reward itself may be quoted in two units at once. UOB's PRVI Miles listing gives a miles figure and the matching UNI$ figure for each tier. [2] HSBC's Singapore page quotes welcome gifts in both miles and Reward points: up to 20,000 miles in the form of 50,000 Reward points on the HSBC TravelOne Credit Card, and up to 48,500 KrisFlyer miles (145,500 Reward points) on the HSBC Premier Mastercard. [3] HSBC describes TravelOne as offering instant reward redemption with a selection of airline and hotel partners. [3]
How does UOB tier overseas card spending?
UOB's PRVI Miles Card is the clearest published tiering among the cards reviewed here, with the geography of the spend setting the rate. [2]
| Spend type | Miles per S$1 | UNI$ per S$5 |
|---|---|---|
| Regional spend in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam | 3 | 7.5 |
| Other overseas spend | 2.4 | 6 |
| Local spend | 1.4 | 3.5 |
| Agoda and Expedia bookings via the UOB PRVI Miles website | up to 8 | 20 |
The same listing shows that a merchant-category rate can sit above every geographic tier: bookings through the card's own Agoda and Expedia pages are quoted at up to 8 miles per S$1. [2] The card also carries recurring bonuses on the American Express version, with 20,000 loyalty miles every year and 5,000 overseas spend bonus miles every calendar quarter. [2]
Is a foreign-currency earning rate the same as an FX fee?
No. The foreign-transaction fee is a charge connected with converting or processing a transaction in another currency, while the earning rate decides how many points, miles or how much cashback the transaction produces. A card can publish both on the same page. [2]
The UOB EVOL Credit Card advertises 0% FX fees worldwide with no minimum spend and no cap, and separately up to 1% cashback on overseas FX spend with no minimum spend and no cap until 31 December 2027. [2] The UOB FX+ Debit Card is presented around the fee and the currency itself: 0% FX fees on all worldwide spend, no cap and no minimum spend, plus the ability to convert currencies in advance at rates as good as those seen online. [2] DBS lists a multi-currency debit card among its card products. [1]
Because the two features are described separately on the issuer pages, a fee waiver tells a cardholder nothing about the earning rate, and a strong earning rate tells them nothing about the fee. [2]
What are the limits on overseas card earning?
- Named countries only. The top PRVI Miles tier covers regional spend in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam; spending elsewhere abroad falls to the "other overseas" rate. [2]
- End dates. The UOB EVOL overseas cashback rate of up to 1% runs until 31 December 2027. [2]
- Quarterly bonuses. The PRVI Miles American Express overseas bonus of 5,000 miles is paid every calendar quarter, not per transaction. [2]
- Banking conditions. The KrisFlyer UOB Debit Card pays up to 6 bonus KrisFlyer miles per S$1 when the holder spends, saves and credits a salary with the KrisFlyer UOB Account. [2]
- Qualifying criteria. The UOB rates on the page are stated to be subject to qualifying criteria and terms and conditions, and HSBC's welcome gifts are likewise conditional. [2] [3]
- Per-card rules. The UOB Lady's Credit Card rate depends on a chosen rewards category rather than on where the merchant is located, so a cardholder cannot assume a geography-based tier. [2]
Frequently asked questions
Do overseas purchases always earn more than local ones?
On the UOB PRVI Miles Card they do: regional spend earns 3 miles per S$1 and other overseas spend 2.4 miles per S$1, against 1.4 miles per S$1 locally. [2] That comparison belongs to that card; each product publishes its own table.
Which countries count as regional spend?
The UOB PRVI Miles Card lists Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam at its top tier. [2]
Can a debit card earn miles on foreign spend?
Yes, in the case of the KrisFlyer UOB Debit Card, which pays 1 KrisFlyer mile per S$1 on Singapore Airlines, Scoot, KrisShop and Kris+ purchases and 0.4 KrisFlyer miles per S$1 on all other spend, with up to 6 bonus miles per S$1 on top when salary is credited to the KrisFlyer UOB Account. [2]
Does a 0% FX fee card also pay a bonus abroad?
The UOB EVOL Credit Card advertises 0% FX fees worldwide and, on the same page and as separate benefits, up to 1% cashback on overseas FX spend until 31 December 2027. [2]
What happens to the points once they are earned?
They usually sit in a bank rewards currency: UOB UNI$ can be redeemed for miles, cash rebate or vouchers, and HSBC Reward points are quoted alongside KrisFlyer miles and can be redeemed with airline and hotel partners. [2] [3]
