FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY

What is an onward ticket requirement?

An onward ticket requirement is an entry condition that asks a traveller to show they will leave the country they are visiting and can pay for their return or onward journey. The United Kingdom sets out this kind of condition for Standard Visitors: a traveller must be able to show they will leave at the end of the visit and can pay for their return or onward journey, or that someone else is funding that journey. [1] Singapore draws a related line between a visa and an immigration pass: an entry visa is a pre-entry permission, and possession of a valid visa does not guarantee entry. [2]

Key takeaways

  • The United Kingdom lists, among its Standard Visitor eligibility conditions, being able to show you will leave at the end of your visit and being able to pay for your return or onward journey. [1]
  • In the United Kingdom the condition applies to visa and visa-free travellers alike, because visitors who do not need a visa must still meet the Standard Visitor eligibility requirements and may be asked questions at the border. [1]
  • An entry visa is a pre-entry permission, not a guarantee of admission: Singapore states that possession of a valid visa does not guarantee entry and that the period of stay is determined by the Visit Pass issued at the checkpoint. [2]
  • United Kingdom guidance treats transit as a distinct purpose: passing through the United Kingdom to another country is listed as a permitted activity, and where transiting is the only reason for coming, a Visitor in Transit visa can be applied for instead at a cost of £74.50. [1]

What counts as proof of onward travel?

United Kingdom, Standard Visitor route. The United Kingdom's Standard Visitor eligibility conditions set out what a visitor must be able to show. To enter as a Standard Visitor, a traveller must be able to show that they will leave the United Kingdom at the end of the visit, and that they are able to pay for their return or onward journey, or that someone else is funding that journey. [1] The same eligibility list adds that the visitor must be able to support themselves and any dependants during the trip, or have funding from someone else to do so. [1] A passport or travel document is required as well, and it should be valid for the whole of the stay. [1]

Those conditions sit alongside the permitted activities of the route, which include tourism, visiting family or friends, certain business activities and study on courses of up to six months. [1] The guidance also states what a Standard Visitor cannot do, including doing paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person outside a permitted paid engagement, claiming public funds, or living in the United Kingdom for long periods through frequent or successive visits. [1]

Singapore. A Singapore entry visa is a pre-entry permission for the holder of a valid visa to travel to, and seek entry into, Singapore; it is not an immigration pass. [2] The grant of an immigration pass is determined by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority officers at the point of entry, and the period of stay is not tied to the validity of the visa. [2] The period of stay is determined by the duration of the Visit Pass issued in the form of an electronic visit pass (e-Pass) at the checkpoint upon entry. [2] Use the entry permission types glossary entry to keep visas, passes and electronic authorisations apart.

Why do border officers ask for it?

The United Kingdom's Standard Visitor eligibility conditions require a visitor to show that they will leave at the end of the visit and can pay for their return or onward journey. [1] The guidance says that travellers who do not need a visa must still meet the Standard Visitor eligibility requirements, and that they may be asked questions at the UK border about their eligibility and the activities they plan to do. [1] Someone who has previously been refused entry to the United Kingdom, or who has a criminal record, may want to apply for a Standard Visitor visa even when one is not required. [1]

In Singapore, a document held in advance does not by itself guarantee entry: possession of a valid visa does not guarantee entry, and the grant of an immigration pass is determined by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority officers at the point of entry. [2] Since 11 March 2022, foreign visitors arriving in Singapore are notified digitally of their Visit Pass by email, with no endorsement in the passport; the notification shows the period of stay granted and the last day of stay allowed. [2] Practical preparation for these checks is covered in passport validity and entry check and in proof of funds and accommodation for entry.

How is it different from a confirmed connection?

United Kingdom guidance treats transit as a distinct purpose. Passing through the United Kingdom to another country, described as travelling in transit, is listed among the permitted activities for a Standard Visitor. [1] Where transiting is the only reason for coming to the United Kingdom, a traveller can apply for a Visitor in Transit visa instead, at a cost of £74.50. [1] That is a separate route from the Standard Visitor conditions requiring the visitor to leave the United Kingdom at the end of the visit. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • Different rules from some places. The United Kingdom guidance notes that the rules on what is needed to enter may be different for travellers coming from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man. [1]
  • Length of stay. A Standard Visitor can usually stay in the United Kingdom for up to six months, and may be able to apply to stay longer in certain circumstances, for example to get medical treatment. [1] A Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for up to six months, and the earliest a traveller can apply is three months before travelling. [1]
  • Arrival cards are not visas. Singapore states that the SG Arrival Card is not a visa. [2] Visa applications are not accepted over the immigration counters, and where a traveller has no local contact with a Singpass/Corppass account, an application may be submitted through an authorised visa agent appointed by the Singapore Overseas Missions or at the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission. [2]
  • Extending a stay. To extend the duration of stay in Singapore, the applicant has to apply for a Short-Term Visit Pass extension. [2] See digital arrival cards and entry forms for the forms side of arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an onward ticket to enter the UK?

Passing through the United Kingdom to another country is listed as a permitted activity, and a Visitor in Transit visa costing £74.50 is available where transiting is the only reason for coming. [1]

How early can I apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa?

The earliest you can apply is three months before you travel, and a visa for up to six months costs £135; a long-term Standard Visitor visa is an option for people who visit the United Kingdom regularly. [1]
