Key takeaways
- The published earning structure pays 5 Points per $1 on prepaid car and hotel bookings in the U.S. Bank Travel Center, 4 Points per $1 on travel and on the first $1,000 of gas and EV charging each quarter, 2 Points per $1 on dining, groceries and qualifying streaming, and 1 Point per $1 everywhere else. [4]
- The welcome offer pays a one-time 20,000 bonus Points after $1,000 or more in eligible Net Purchases within 90 days of account opening, and previous cardholders who took a new account bonus for this product in the last five years are excluded. [4]
- A 0% introductory APR runs for 15 billing cycles on purchases and on balance transfers made in the first 60 days, and each balance transfer costs 5% of the amount with a $5 minimum. [4]
- Points are earned and redeemed only while the account is open and in good standing on the closing date of the billing cycle. [2]
How do you earn Points with the Altitude Connect card?
U.S. Bank publishes the Altitude Connect earning rates by merchant category, and every rate is calculated on Net Purchases, which the issuer defines as Purchases minus credits and returns. [4]
| Where you spend | Points per $1 | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid car and hotel reservations booked in the online Travel Center | 5 | 1 base Point plus 4 bonus Points; these bookings are not classified as travel category transactions [4] |
| Travel category purchases | 4 | Airlines, hotels, car rentals, taxicabs, limousines, passenger trains and cruise line companies [4] |
| Gas stations and electric vehicle charging stations | 4 | First $1,000 of such purchases each quarter [4] |
| Restaurants, fast-food restaurants and bars | 2 | 1 base Point plus 1 bonus Point [4] |
| Grocery stores and supermarkets | 2 | Discount stores, supercenters and wholesale clubs earn 1 Point [4] |
| Qualifying streaming subscription services | 2 | Official merchant list is set out in the Program Rules [4] |
| All other eligible Net Purchases | 1 | Base rate [4] |
The Travel Center rate and the travel category rate are separate. Prepaid car and hotel reservations bought in the online Travel Center are not classified as travel category merchant transactions and cannot also collect the travel bonus, but they earn the higher 5 Points rate instead. [4] Bonus Points can take one to two statement billing cycles to appear on the account. [4]
What does the 20,000-point welcome offer require?
A one-time 20,000 bonus Points is awarded to cardholders approved for a new Altitude Connect Visa Signature card who make $1,000 or more in total eligible Net Purchases within 90 days of account opening. [4] The bonus is credited within one to two billing cycles after the spending requirement is met. [4]
Existing and previous Altitude Connect Visa Signature cardmembers are not eligible if they have received a new account bonus for this product in the last five years, and the offer cannot be combined with any other bonus offer. [4] Use of the card is governed by the cardmember agreement provided at account opening, which may be amended from time to time. [4]
What are the card's rate and fee terms?
New accounts receive a 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 15 billing cycles, and on balance transfers made within 60 days of account opening for the same 15 billing cycles. [4] After the introductory period a variable APR applies, and the introductory rate does not apply to cash advances. [4]
A balance transfer fee of 5% of each transfer amount applies, with a $5 minimum. [4] U.S. Bank states that it may change APRs, fees and other account terms in the future under the cardmember agreement and applicable law. [2]
How do you redeem Altitude Connect Points?
Redemption follows the card's Program Rules, which U.S. Bank points cardholders to in the online Rewards Center after approval. [2] Points can be earned and redeemed only while the account is open and in good standing, meaning not past due and not overlimit, on the closing date of the billing cycle. [2]
U.S. Bank also describes Real-Time Rewards, a redemption method offered on several of its credit cards, in which an enrolled cardholder makes a purchase and receives a text message offering the option to redeem Points toward it by replying "REDEEM". [2] The Points balance must cover the entire purchase for the message to be sent, and redeemed Points are deducted from the balance and issued as a credit to the monthly billing statement. [2]
Exceptions and limits
- Not every transaction counts as a Purchase: convenience cheques, balance transfers, advances such as ATM withdrawals, wire transfers, traveller's cheques, money orders, foreign cash transactions, betting transactions and lottery tickets, interest charges and fees, credit insurance premiums, and transactions used to fund certain prepaid card products, buy currency from the U.S. Mint or buy cash-convertible items are excluded from rewards earning. [2]
- Each merchant's business is identified by a category code set by Visa; a purchase earns no additional rewards where that code falls in an ineligible category, and U.S. Bank reserves the right to decide which purchases qualify for additional rewards. [2]
- Grocery purchases at wholesale clubs and at discount stores or supercenters such as Target and Walmart earn only 1 Point, and gas or EV charging at discount stores, supercenters, wholesale clubs, grocery stores or supermarkets also earns only 1 Point. [4]
- The 4 Points rate at gas stations and EV charging stations applies to the first $1,000 of those purchases each quarter, not to spending above that amount. [4]
- Which streaming services qualify is decided by an official merchant list held in the Program Rules rather than by the card's marketing page. [4]
- The credit card is available to United States residents only. [2]
- U.S. Bank applies Zero Fraud Liability for unauthorised transactions, and the cardholder must notify the bank promptly of any unauthorised use; certain conditions and limitations apply. [2]
