How to qualify for Air Europa SUMA tiers
Air Europa SUMA status is the card level a member holds in Air Europa's frequent flyer programme, which publishes three levels — Silver, Gold and Platinum — and awards a level bonus on base Miles earned with partners. [4] The Miles that establish a member's level, called Level Miles, can only be earned on flights operated by Air Europa and SkyTeam Alliance airlines. [3]

Key takeaways
- Air Europa publishes three SUMA card levels — Silver, Gold and Platinum — with a level bonus of 50%, 75% and 100% on base Miles on the Aerolíneas Argentinas partner page. [4]
- Level Miles, the Miles used to set a member's level, can only be earned on flights operated by Air Europa and SkyTeam Alliance airlines. [3]
- Suma Miles, the redeemable currency, are earned on flights operated by Air Europa or any partner airline of the programme, and on eligible partner products and services. [3]
- An account that neither earns nor redeems Miles for 18 months from its last registered operation loses its entire accumulated Miles balance. [3]
What is Air Europa SUMA and who can join?
Air Europa SUMA is the loyalty programme of Air Europa, and its stated purpose is to reward member loyalty by allocating Miles that can be redeemed for services or products offered by Air Europa, SUMA partner airlines and non-airline partners. [3] Membership is open to any individual regardless of country of residence, provided the person registers through the official membership form; legal entities cannot register, and registration is free. [3]
A valid email address is required to confirm registration, and the account is then activated through a link sent to that address. [3] Each member receives a unique SUMA membership number, which has to be quoted when booking flights or buying eligible products and services. [3] The programme is run mainly online through the SUMA section of the Air Europa website, and members can also resolve queries with SUMA Customer Service. [3]
SUMA benefits are compatible with those of the Air Europa Empresas programme, so a single flight can generate Suma Miles for the member and, where applicable, Points for a company registered with Empresas. [3]
What are the Air Europa SUMA levels and what bonus do they carry?
Air Europa's SUMA partner page for Aerolíneas Argentinas sets out a card-level bonus applied to the base Miles earned on that airline, and it names three levels. [4]
| Card level | Level bonus on base Miles |
|---|---|
| Silver | 50% |
| Gold | 75% |
| Platinum | 100% |
That bonus is calculated by applying the percentage to the number of base Miles only, without including bonuses or promotions. [4] The same page explains that base Miles are the actual Miles flown, and that the percentage applied to them depends on the booking class of the ticket. [4]
The programme conditions direct members to check the Miles table in the SUMA section of the Air Europa website, and Air Europa reserves the right to change that table at any time, with the date of the most recent modification shown in that section. [3]
How do you earn Level Miles toward SUMA status?
The conditions distinguish several kinds of Miles in a SUMA account. Suma Miles are the programme currency earned on eligible flights and partner purchases, Available Miles are the ones sitting in the account that can be redeemed, and Level Miles are the Miles used to establish the level of Air Europa SUMA members. [3]
The definition of Level Miles narrows where status progress can come from: these Miles can only be earned on flights operated by Air Europa and SkyTeam Alliance airlines. [3] Suma Miles more generally are earned on flights operated by Air Europa or any partner airline of the SUMA programme, as well as through affiliated partner companies. [3]
Where Miles are calculated from spend, the total is based on the amount the member paid, with Miles earned for each euro paid exclusively for the published fare and fuel surcharge; fees, taxes, public charges and other charges such as management expenses do not earn Miles. [3]
Members must identify themselves with their SUMA number when booking or buying an eligible service, and Miles are credited only after the flight has actually been taken or the service provided. [3] The conditions also state that Miles are not awarded where the member did not give the number when booking, purchasing a service or claiming non-credited Miles, and that the member is solely responsible for identifying themselves correctly. [3]
How does SkyTeam feature in SUMA earning and redemption?
SkyTeam appears on both sides of the programme. [3] Suma Miles may be redeemed for Air Europa flights, flights operated by SkyTeam Alliance airlines, flights operated by airlines affiliated with the programme, and products or services from non-airline partners. [3] Cash can be combined with accrued Miles when redeeming for Air Europa tickets, and an award ticket is defined in the conditions as a ticket for flights operated by Air Europa or Air Europa Partners paid in Miles or in a combination of Miles and money. [3]
Aerolíneas Argentinas has been part of SkyTeam since 2012, flies to 20 international destinations and operates 38 flights within Argentina, and Air Europa lists it as a valid partner for both earning and redeeming Suma Miles. [4] On its flights, published earning varies by booking class: Business and Club Economy (J, C, D, I, W, S) at 125% of base Miles, Full Flex (Y, B, M) and Economy (U, K, H, L, Q) at 100%, and Promo fares (T, E, N, V, G, plus A and R on international flights only) at 50%. [4] Booking classes O, F, Z, X and P are not valid for earning. [4]
Award tickets obtained with Suma Miles may be issued in the name of a person chosen by the member, and that passenger does not have to be a SUMA member. [3]
Exceptions and limits on SUMA rules
- Charter flights and flights taken in exchange for Miles earn nothing, and flights, services or products obtained with Miles generate neither Suma Miles nor Air Europa Empresas Points. [3]
- A flight suspended for reasons covered by the Contract of Carriage, including force majeure and security reasons, where the passenger travels with another airline, does not earn Miles. [3]
- The level bonus is applied to base Miles only, excluding bonuses and promotions. [4]
- If a member neither earns nor redeems Miles for 18 months from the last registered operation — including allocating or transferring Miles — the whole accumulated balance expires and can no longer be redeemed; Air Europa reserves the right to change that period, giving notice in the SUMA section of its website. [3]
- Members can end their membership in the SUMA section of the website; the termination takes effect within 72 hours of Air Europa receiving the notice, after which Air Europa cancels the account and its Miles. [3]
- Air Europa may block an account and hold the member accountable where it finds wrongful or fraudulent use of the programme. [3]
- Award tickets bought with Suma Miles are non-refundable and allow date and route changes only where the selected fare includes that option, and the member pays airport taxes, duties, public charges and administration fees. [3] For Aerolíneas Argentinas awards, booking is made through the Air Europa SUMA call centre, the ticket is paid in full with Suma Miles, airport taxes are not included and the ticket is non-refundable. What happens if I forget to quote my SUMA number?
Members who did not give the number before the flight can do so in the SUMA section of the Air Europa website or by calling SUMA Customer Service, but the same conditions state that Miles are not awarded where the number was not provided when booking, buying a service or claiming missing Miles. [3]
