How to earn AirAsia Rewards points

AirAsia rewards is the loyalty program operated by BIGLIFE Sdn. Bhd. in which members collect AirAsia points from paid AirAsia flights, from spending and Missions on the AirAsia MOVE platform, and from registered partner merchants, with points earned from 1 June 2019 staying valid for 24 months from the date they are credited. [1] On flights, the number of points awarded is set by the fare family purchased and by the member's tier on the day the flight departs. [1]

Key takeaways

  • AirAsia points arrive from three directions: paid AirAsia flights booked on the platform, XP-earning Missions and spending on the platform, and any merchant registered under AirAsia rewards, where every merchant sets its own earn rate. [1]
  • Flight points scale with fare and tier, from up to 1.5X for a Red member on a Low Fare up to 12X for a Black member on Premium Flex or Premium FlatBed. [1]
  • Points credited from 1 June 2019 onward last 24 months from the crediting date, and points issued through a specific promotion can be given a different expiry. [1]
  • Missing points can be claimed up to 60 days after the flight, stay or purchase, and no claim is accepted from someone who was not yet a member when the transaction happened. [1]

How do you earn AirAsia points on AirAsia flights?

Paid travel booked on the platform earns AirAsia points and Qualifying Flown Sectors on all AirAsia flights. [1] The membership agreement applies to every program and initiative under AirAsia rewards, including co-branding arrangements with partners. [1] The tier used for the calculation is the one held when the flight departs, not the one held when the ticket was booked. [1]

Low Fare tickets are described as earning "up to" the multiplier shown, while Premium Flex and Premium FlatBed tickets earn the stated multiplier. [1] The worked examples use a RM100 flight, and points are calculated on transactions in Malaysian Ringgit at the exchange rate BIGLIFE sets. [1] The airlines in scope are the AirAsia branded operators named in the agreement: AirAsia Berhad (Malaysia), Thai AirAsia Co. Ltd, PT Indonesia AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, Inc., AirAsia (Cambodia) Co., Ltd, AirAsia X Berhad (Malaysia) and Thai AirAsia X Co., Ltd. [1] Short-haul flights operated by AK, FD, QZ, Z2 and KT count as one Qualifying Flown Sector, and long-haul flights operated by D7 and XJ count as two regardless of Fly-Thru. [1]

Two long-haul operators earn on a delayed timetable: AirAsia X Berhad (Malaysia) flights earn points only when flown on or after 12 March 2023, and Thai AirAsia X Co., Ltd. flights only when flown on or after 1 January 2026. [1] Sectors feed the tier ladder, which runs from Red at 0–13 sectors through Gold at 14–23 and Platinum at 24–49 to Black at 50 or more; a Fly-Thru connection is computed as two sectors. [1]

How do you earn AirAsia points with merchants, platform missions and co-brand cards?

Beyond flights, an AirAsia member ID earns points at any merchant signed up by BIGLIFE for points issuance, and the earn rate differs from one merchant to another; the full merchant list and earn structure are published on the AirAsia rewards site. [1] BIGLIFE can add, remove, substitute or change merchants and the points issuance, conversion or redemption structure at its discretion. [1]

The platform — the AirAsia website and the AirAsia MOVE app — pays XP for spending on participating products and services, including AirAsia hotels, AirAsia shop, AirAsia ride, AirAsia flights and Fly Beyond, and for Missions that involve no transaction. [1] XP sets the tier thresholds: Gold needs at least 30,000 XP, Platinum at least 80,000 and Black at least 150,000. [1] A member who also holds an AirAsia Co-Brand Card is automatically placed in the Platinum or Gold tier as applicable, and is reviewed for requalification in the anniversary month of the card against criteria published at AirAsiacards.com. [1] Tier upgrades are reflected in the system within five days, with airline sectors reviewed monthly, co-brand activity on card activation and platform activity daily. [1]

When do AirAsia points post, and how do you claim missing points?

Posting speed is set by each merchant under its own terms, so the time it takes for points to appear in an account varies by merchant, and BIGLIFE states it does not control or take responsibility for that timing. [1] Accounts are adjusted when credits or debits are posted, including those from returned goods, and disputed transactions or billings are not credited with points. [1]

A retrospective claim must be made within a maximum of 60 days from the fulfillment date — the flown date, the completion date of a stay or the date of purchase, as the case may be — and the final decision to award points rests with BIGLIFE. [1] No retrospective claim is allowed for a transaction made before the person registered as a member. [1] A valid claim is processed within 14 days of the request, provided all the information and documents BIGLIFE asks for are supplied; the claim is also subject to the merchant's own terms. [1] Disputes about the points statement must be raised within one month of the statement date, otherwise the statement is treated as correct and binding. [1]

Points can also move between members: since 18 January 2021 a member may transfer points to another member for a fee, in predefined denominations offered on the AirAsia rewards site, with the fee taken either in cash or by deducting points. [1]

How long do AirAsia points stay valid?

Points earned from 1 June 2019 remain valid for 24 months from the date they are credited to the account and are automatically deducted at the end of the 24th consecutive month. [1] No extension period is given for unused expired points unless BIGLIFE determines or approves otherwise, and BIGLIFE may configure a different expiry date for points awarded under specific promotions or campaigns. [1] When points are redeemed, the earliest-expiring points are used first, followed by the earliest accumulated. [1] Accumulating points does not give a member a vested right to any particular award, and members are told not to rely on the continued availability of any award or benefit. [1]

Exceptions and limits

  • No-shows. A passenger who does not show for the relevant flight does not earn Qualifying Flown Sectors. [1]
  • Award flights. Flights redeemed with AirAsia points, or with points plus cash, do not earn Qualifying Flown Sectors. [1]
  • Non-revenue fares. Charter flights, staff-related benefits and duty travel are excluded from Qualifying Flown Sectors. [1]
  • Promotional fares. Sectors are awarded on any promotional fare, but selected promotional fares as determined by AirAsia do not earn AirAsia points. [1]
  • Cabin upgrades. A member upgraded to a different class without the ticket being reissued earns points on the fare originally purchased, as reflected on the ticket. [1]
  • Voucher payments. Tickets paid for with travel vouchers issued by AirAsia X Berhad (Malaysia) do not earn AirAsia points. [1]
  • Account standing. Fraudulent or abusive earning, including points earned by travel agents on behalf of unrelated members, can lead to forfeiture of accumulated points and cancellation of the membership and member ID. [1] Voluntarily canceling a membership is irreversible and forfeits the points and Qualifying Flown Sectors left in the account. [1]
