COMPARISON
Avios Programs Compared
Avios is the points name used in British Airways Club, Iberia Club and Qatar Airways Privilege Club. [1] [3] [4] Earning rates and award prices vary by programme, route, cabin and ticket type, and some terms apply only to a specific market or booking channel. [1] [2] This comparison is limited to those three programmes and their published rules as at 18 October 2026. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- British Airways Club earning on British Airways-marketed flights is based on ticket price and eligible add-ons, multiplied by tier: 6 Avios per pound for Blue, 7 for Bronze, 8 for Silver and 9 for Gold. [1]
- The same programme uses a different basis for some partners: Iberia flights credited to British Airways Club earn 5–8 Avios per euro by tier, while Qatar Airways flights earn a percentage of miles flown with a 300-Avio minimum that may vary in discount economy. [1]
- British Airways Reward Flights pair Avios with a fixed cash amount on British Airways flights, but the cash amount is variable on Iberia, American Airlines and oneworld partner flights. [2]
- British Airways Club and Qatar Airways Privilege Club let linked members move Avios between accounts at 1:1 with no fee, subject to eligibility and linking limits. [3]
Earning
On British Airways-marketed flights, a British Airways Club member earns on the fare and eligible add-ons bought as part of the trip, including carrier charges, cabin upgrades, pre-booked paid seats and additional baggage; non-airline taxes and fees such as airport charges and government taxes do not earn. [1]
The rate is applied to “total eligible spend” in pounds, with 6 Avios per pound for Blue members, 7 for Bronze, 8 for Silver and 9 for Gold; payments in another currency are converted to GBP using the IATA five-day exchange rate on the purchase date. [1]
Some bookings do not use the fare paid: British Airways Holidays packages, some partner flights and some travel-agent bookings earn on a percentage of miles flown and cabin, with tier bonuses of 15% for Bronze, 30% for Silver and 50% for Gold. [1] Some UK point-of-sale negotiated fares booked through travel management companies use the equivalent ba.com fare for bookings flown from 21 December 2025. [1]
Partner earning is not uniform. Iberia flights credited to British Airways Club earn on ticket price at 5 Avios per euro for Blue, 6 for Bronze, 7 for Silver and 8 for Gold, with extra Avios on Madrid–Barcelona Air Shuttle and on Iberia flights between Spain and Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean excluding Puerto Rico, and South America; where an Iberia fare is unavailable, a fixed amount based on origin and destination applies. [1]
Qatar Airways flights credited to British Airways Club earn a percentage of miles flown, with no tier bonus and a minimum of 300 Avios that may vary in discount economy; the published rates date from 1 October 2021. [1]
Redemption
British Airways calls an Avios booking a Reward Flight, and on British Airways flights the price is a fixed Avios amount plus a fixed cash amount covering taxes, fees and carrier charges; the Avios and cash price depend on date, destination and class. [2] On flights with Iberia, American Airlines and oneworld partners, the cash amount is variable rather than fixed, and partner Avios prices may vary by route and distance. [2]
The programme guarantees at least eight economy, two premium economy and four business reward seats on British Airways flights to and from Heathrow and Gatwick, and two business and two economy seats on flights to and from London City. [2] Dates are priced as peak or off-peak, and a booking can mix the two; Avios part payment starts at 1,000 Avios. [2]
Examples published as correct in May 2026 put travel to Europe, the UK and Ireland from 10,000 Avios plus £2.50 each way, a return further afield from 55,000 Avios plus £150, and a Club World return from 154,000 Avios plus £350. [2]
Qatar Airways Privilege Club linked members can redeem Avios from either or both linked accounts for award tickets or Cash + Avios without moving Avios first, and Cash + Avios can save up to 50% of the cash amount on Qatar Airways tickets. [3] At checkout, linked members choose proportional deduction, Privilege Club first or British Airways Club first; changes and refunds are handled offline, and refunded Avios go to the Privilege Club account before any move back. [3]
Transfers and pooling
British Airways Club and Qatar Airways Privilege Club members can link one account each if they are at least 18 and their personal details match; linking is available from 30 days after account creation, is not available offline, and only one Privilege Club account and one British Airways Club account can be linked at a time. [3] A Privilege Club account can be linked to a British Airways Club account at most twice in any 50-year period, and members can unlink at any time. [3]
Once linked, Avios can move in either direction with no fee, at 1:1, with no published minimum or maximum and no limit on the number of moves except in suspected fraud; Avios are credited immediately unless there is a problem, in which case members are told to contact the programmes if the move has not completed within 24 hours. [3] After a move, the receiving programme’s terms apply, including its expiry rules. [3]
Household and family pooling has separate limits: a British Airways household account can include up to seven members, including at most six under 18, and earns and redeems for any one person in the household and no other; an Iberia Club family account combines Avios from up to seven people into one balance. [3] [4] The Qatar Airways Family Programme can include up to 10 members, a main member plus up to nine family members, pooling Avios in the main member’s account. [3]
Only the main member of a Qatar Airways Family Programme can move Avios to a British Airways account, while a British Airways household member over 18 can link an individual membership and move only that individual balance. [3]
Exceptions and limits
- British Airways codeshare earning depends on the flight number: a British Airways code earns Avios whoever operates the flight, a oneworld code earns only if a oneworld airline also operates it, and other codes do not earn; the airline code booked determines the amount. [1]
- Using Avios to part-pay a cash ticket does not reduce earning: Avios are collected on the full ticket price before the Avios discount, while a discount or voucher code reduces the price on which Avios are calculated. [1]
- British Airways Avios-only flights are direct journeys sold only as Reward Flights to British Airways Club members; a traveller can pair one Avios-only leg with another Reward Flight leg but cannot put an Avios-only or other Reward Flight on the same booking as a commercial flight. [2]
- An Avios-only flight can be cancelled up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund less a £35 service fee; within 24 hours, taxes, fees and charges paid are refunded to the original payment method, but Avios and the cash portion of an Avios & Money booking are not refunded. [2]
- Linking and moving Avios is not available offline, and British Airways and Qatar Airways may require both authentication steps for linking, movement or redemption; either programme may suspend an account, remove Avios or close an account for breach of the linking terms. [3]
- Avios under those linking terms have no fixed or par value and cannot be redeemed for cash. [3]
