Buying miles for a specific trip: when to consider it

Buy miles only after you know which award you can book, the miles you still need and the cash charges due. A headline bonus is not a trip plan.

Confirm the award first

Search the issuing programme’s own site for the exact date, route, passenger count and cabin. Check that the result can proceed to booking and note the miles required. If the seat is only visible in a third-party search tool, confirm it with the programme before buying or transferring anything.

Compare the full cost

Calculate the miles shortfall, the purchase price shown to your account, the award’s taxes and charges, and any payment or currency-conversion costs. Compare that total with the cash ticket under equivalent dates, cabin, baggage and change conditions. Do not use a generic cents-per-mile value as a substitute for this trip’s real alternatives.

Include the risks

Purchased miles may not be refundable, and an award seat can disappear before you finish. Check the programme’s purchase terms, account eligibility, expiry treatment and refund rules. A bonus offer does not make an unavailable award bookable.

A simple decision rule

If you do not have a specific bookable award, wait. If you do, buy only the amount needed after checking the complete price and the programme’s terms.
