How to earn Asia Miles on Cathay Pacific and oneworld partner flights
Asia Miles is the mileage currency of the Cathay Membership Programme, which is provided by Asia Miles Limited and governed by programme terms effective on and from 1 January 2026 (time in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China). [3] Those terms give Asia Miles earned through flight transactions a section of their own, while the oneworld alliance presents its member airlines as a network serving more than 900 destinations in 170 territories. [3] [2]

Key takeaways
- Cathay's membership terms, effective 1 January 2026 (time in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China), keep flight earning in a dedicated section, apart from non-flight earning and partner promotions. [3]
- oneworld describes its member airlines in terms of destinations, lounges and network reach; the alliance's member page carries no mileage-earning table and no fare-class rules. [2]
- Whether miles already in an account stay usable is a separate question, answered by the activity rule: earn or redeem at least once every 18 months. [4]
Where the earning rules sit
Cathay's membership terms state that they govern the contractual relationship between Asia Miles Limited and members of the Cathay Membership Programme. [3] The document is organised by topic, with a section headed Asia Miles Earned Through Flight Transactions, a second section for Asia Miles earned from non-flight transactions, and further sections for partner promotions and for missing mileage requests. [3] Flight awards and oneworld multi-carrier awards are handled under redemption, not under earning. [3]
That structure matters when a reader is checking a booking: the flight-earning rules are written for flights, and the conditions attached to shopping, dining, card spend or promotional partners sit in different sections and are not evidence for how a ticket will credit. [3]
What oneworld membership covers
oneworld describes itself as an alliance whose airlines together serve more than 900 destinations in 170 territories, with hundreds of airport lounges. [2] Its member page sets out that grouping in terms of network reach, lounges and counts of member and future member airlines. [2]
That page publishes no mileage-earning rates, fare-class eligibility or minimum credit rules for any member airline's programme. [2] Alliance membership tells a reader that an airline sits in the same grouping as Cathay; on the evidence of that page, it does not say what a ticket on that airline will credit. [2]
The page is also a dated record. It notes that oneworld and S7 Airlines agreed to suspend S7's membership with effect from 19 April 2022, until further notice. [2] Any check of a partner's position should therefore be tied to the date on which it was made. [2]
The 18-month activity condition
Cathay's FAQ on the Asia Miles expiry rule says that, from 1 January 2020 (time in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China), a member can keep Asia Miles active by earning or redeeming miles at least once every 18 months. [4] Under this activity-based system the expiry date is extended automatically by 18 months from the last miles crediting or debiting date, and the FAQ states that this is the crediting or debiting date rather than the date of the activity or transaction itself. [4]
The FAQ also marks the boundary of the change: miles credited on or before 31 December 2019 continue to follow the earlier arrangement, under which miles expired three years after being credited. [4] The change is described as a move from a time-based system to an activity-based one. [4]
This rule concerns how long miles already in an account remain usable. It does not say which flights credit miles, and the FAQ does not address fare classes, marketing carriers or partner eligibility. [4]
Status Points and Asia Miles are separate
Cathay's terms deal with Status Points and membership status in a different section from Asia Miles. [3] The 2026 key-changes page, which addresses status rather than mileage accrual, states that status from 1 January 2027 will be determined by the Status Points earned between 1 January and 31 December 2026, and that membership periods will end at 11.59pm on 31 December 2026. [6]
The same page lists further changes taking effect from 1 January 2027: the Status Points balance will no longer reset each time a member earns a higher status, only at the end of each Status Points earning period; a new Diamond Exec status will require a minimum of 2,400 Status Points in an earning period; and Gold, Diamond and Diamond Exec members will be able to roll over Status Points earned above the requirement, up to 50% of the requirement for the status achieved. [6]
The key-changes page gives no earning rate for flights on Cathay or on partner airlines, and it does not connect Status Points to the rate at which Asia Miles accrue. [6]
Exceptions and limits
- Alliance membership is not an earning rule. oneworld's member page covers network reach and lounges and carries no earning table, so an airline's presence in the alliance is not by itself evidence that a ticket will credit. [2]
- Older balances keep older rules. Asia Miles credited on or before 31 December 2019 remain under the earlier three-year arrangement rather than the 18-month activity rule. [4]
- Crediting date, not travel date. The 18-month extension runs from the last miles crediting or debiting date, not from the date the activity or transaction took place. [4]
- Status is a different measure. Status Points, including the rollover and reset changes due from 1 January 2027, are described apart from Asia Miles, so a status rule should not be read as a mileage-earning rule. [3] [6]
