How to pool Chase Ultimate Rewards points across cards

Chase Ultimate Rewards is the rewards program attached to eligible Chase credit cards, and pooling means moving points from one Ultimate Rewards card to another so that they sit in a single balance. [1] [2] Under the program agreement published for the Ink Business Preferred card, points can be moved only to another Chase card with Ultimate Rewards belonging to you, one member of your household, or the owner of the company, as applicable. [2]

Key takeaways

  • Ultimate Rewards points can be combined with your other eligible Chase cards that have Ultimate Rewards, under the program agreement published for the Ink Business Preferred card. [2]
  • The receiving card is restricted: it must belong to you, one member of your household, or the owner of the company, as applicable. [2]
  • Pooling points into one card does not by itself unlock airline and hotel transfers, because Chase presents transfer to travel partners as something available with select cards. [1]

How do you combine points across your Chase cards?

The program agreement states that you can combine points with your other eligible Chase cards that have Ultimate Rewards, and narrows where they can go: only to another Chase card with Ultimate Rewards belonging to you, one member of your household, or the owner of the company, as applicable. [2] A move can be started at chase.com/ultimaterewards, by calling the number on the back of your card, or at a Chase branch. [2]

Both accounts have to be in good standing at the moment of the move, because points cannot be moved to another eligible card if either account is prohibited from earning or using points when you attempt it. [2] Chase may temporarily block earning and using points if it suspects misuse or fraudulent activity, and says you can begin again in the next billing cycle after you pay the account current, or once the concern is resolved. [2]

A pooled balance follows the program's ordinary rules: points do not expire while the account is open, and redemptions for cash, gift cards and travel value each point at one cent, so 100 points equals $1, while other options may be worth more or less and special promotions can exceed that rate. [2]

Who can you pool Ultimate Rewards points with?

The list of permitted recipients is short, and moving or transferring points to an ineligible person, third party or account is listed in the agreement as an example of misuse. [2] Points also stay inside the program in a second sense: they are not your property, have no value until redeemed, and cannot be transferred or moved unless the agreement expressly provides for it, including by operation of law such as inheritance, bankruptcy or divorce. [2]

Because the permission is written around ownership of the receiving card, the question worth settling first is whose name is on the card that will hold the pooled points. [2] For how authorised users are treated on a Chase account, see the glossary entry on authorized user.

How do authorized users and business accounts fit in?

An authorized user is anyone you permit to use the account, such as employees. [2] Purchases made with the card by you or an authorized user earn points, and you remain responsible for how the points are used, including when you allow authorized users to access them. [2]

A business account adds a purpose test: points must be used for the company's business purposes only, to benefit only the company and not for the personal benefit of any individual, and in compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, ethics standards and company policies. [2] When a business moves points out to an airline or hotel program, the permitted recipients are narrower than for card-to-card pooling, because the frequent travel program account must belong to you or to an owner of the company who is listed as an authorized user on the Chase account. [2]

Does pooling make points transferable to airline or hotel partners?

Not on its own. Chase presents "Transfer to Travel Partners" as a feature available with select cards, while the program agreement lists transfers to participating frequent travel programs alongside cash, gift cards, travel and pay with points as options the program may offer. [1] [2] Before moving a balance into a particular card, check that the card offers the transfer option you want. [1]

  • Points transfer in 1,000-point increments. [2]
  • A transfer fee may be charged, and Chase says it tells you whether a fee applies and the amount before you transfer. [2]
  • Most requests process by the next business day, but can take up to 7 business days depending on the travel program. [2]
  • The details you give must match the travel program's records, and differences may delay a transfer or prevent it. [2]
  • Transferred points become subject to the travel program's own terms, which Chase does not administer. [2]
  • A completed transfer cannot be refunded or cancelled, and the list of participating programs can change without notice. [2]

Exceptions and limits

  • Blocked accounts. No move between cards is possible if either account is barred from earning or using points at the time you try. [2]
  • Forfeiture. You immediately lose all points if your account status changes or the account is closed for misuse, fraud, failure to comply with other Chase agreements, or because Chase believes you may be unwilling or unable to pay your debts, among other listed reasons, and Chase will not reinstate points unless it made an error. [2]
  • Ordinary closure. If the account is closed for any other reason, you have at least 30 days from the closure date to use your points; unused points are then lost unless the law limits or prohibits that, in which case they are automatically redeemed for cash as a statement credit. [2] The same 30-day window applies if Chase cancels the program. [2]
  • Death of the account holder. If the account is closed as a result of your death, points are automatically redeemed for cash as a statement credit. [2]
  • Returns and refunds. Points are calculated at the close of each billing cycle after returns and refunds, so more refunds than purchases can push the balance negative. [2]
  • Card-specific rules. The combining and transfer rules described here come from the program agreement published for the Ink Business Preferred card, while Chase's card pages set out which features, such as travel partner transfers, each card includes. [1] [2]
