Children and infants on award tickets
Children and infant award rules vary by programme and operating carrier. Confirm the child’s age, seat, passenger name, award price and required documents before ticketing.
Does the child occupy a seat?
Programmes can price an award differently for a child using a seat and an infant travelling on an adult’s lap. A separate infant ticket may also be issued by the operating airline. Do not assume a child’s cash fare equals the miles required for an award.
Check both sides of a partner booking
The programme that issues the award may have one set of rules; the airline that operates the flight may set the infant, bassinet, document and seating procedures. Confirm that the passenger name and age information are correct before the ticket is issued.
Confirm travel documents and assistance
Check passport, visa, consent and custody documentation with the relevant government and airline. If you need a bassinet, family seating or other help, contact the operating airline early and confirm the request on every segment.
Use airline examples carefully
JAL and ANA publish their own child and infant award conditions. Their rules illustrate why the age, seat and operating-carrier details matter; they do not set a universal mileage rule.
