Family points sharing: pooling, transfers and award users
A shared household account, a point transfer and a named award beneficiary solve different problems. They are not interchangeable across loyalty programmes.
Three different models
- Pooling: eligible members contribute to or redeem from a shared balance under one programme’s rules.
- Transfer: points move from one individual account to another; limits, fees and expiry treatment can apply.
- Award user or beneficiary: a member uses their own balance to book travel for another person, without moving the balance.
Read the account rules before combining balances
Check who can join, whether members must share a household or address, which countries are supported, how children are handled, how often transfers are allowed and whether pooled points can be moved back. Programme terms can also limit who may travel on an award booked from your account.
Examples are programme-specific
Hilton Honors describes points pooling and one-to-one transfers under its own limits. JAL Mileage Bank generally does not combine member balances for an award, while certain family programmes have separate conditions. Neither example should be assumed to apply to another airline or hotel group.
