GUIDE

Start here: your first lounge visit, step by step

A first lounge visit is really decided before you reach the airport: you need to know which card or programme is granting you entry, what conditions that grant carries, and whether the same grant covers the people travelling with you. [3] [5]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Access is granted by a named product or programme, and the conditions sit inside that grant rather than in one general rule. [3] [5]
  • Some grants are counted or time-bound: American Express lists 10 Delta Sky Club visits as part of its Platinum Card lounge benefit, and the airline fee credit on the same card runs per calendar year. [3]
  • Where a benefit reaches you through a partner, the partner's terms control it, and United states it is not responsible for the nature or quality of partner products or services. [5]
  • A companion's benefit can depend on the member still travelling on the same reservation. [5]

Step 1: find the grant

Start by naming the thing that gets you in. On the American Express Platinum Card, the lounge benefit is bundled as the Global Lounge Collection, which Amex describes as over 1,550 airport lounges as of January 2026 and more than any other credit card company on the market. [3] That collection is listed as covering Centurion Lounges, 10 Delta Sky Club visits when flying on an eligible Delta flight, Priority Pass membership with enrollment required, and other select partner lounges. [3]

The other common route is a programme benefit. United's MileagePlus rules refer to lounge access among the benefits a member may receive at booking, check-in or travel, and require the member to keep their MileagePlus number on the reservation and on any later reservation created from it, for the whole of the original and future travel. [5] The rules checked do not describe the entry conditions for any individual United lounge, so name your exact route first and treat everything else as detail to confirm. [5]

Step 2: read the conditions attached to it

Two conditions appear on the face of the Amex grant: Priority Pass requires enrollment, and the Delta Sky Club element applies when you are flying on an eligible Delta flight. [3] The Delta Sky Club element is also expressed as 10 visits; the page checked does not state the period over which those visits are counted. [3]

If your access rides on elite status, check that the status is live for your travel dates rather than the year you earned it. United says members have a full calendar year, 1 January to 31 December, to earn enough Premier qualifying points and flights for Premier status, that status runs from the day you qualify to the end of the next programme year, and that status reached in 2026 will not expire until 31 January 2028. [7] Qualifying also requires at least four paid flight segments operated by United or United Express in the calendar year. [7]

Where the access comes from a partner airline or a partner lounge network, the applicable partner's terms govern that offer. [5]

Step 3: sort out who is with you

Companion access is not automatic and can be tied to your own travel. United's rules say that if a companion obtains benefits by virtue of a member's status and that member is no longer travelling on the original reservation, the companion travelling on that reservation stops being eligible for the benefits obtained through the member's status. [5] The same rules say programme awards and benefits do not constitute property of the member and are not transferable except as the rules allow. [5]

Confirm them with the lounge operator for the specific lounge and date before you build a trip around them.

Step 4: what to confirm before you arrive

  • Which lounge, and where.
  • Whether enrollment is finished. Priority Pass access on the Amex Platinum Card requires enrollment, so complete it before the trip rather than at the door. [3]
  • Whether your flight satisfies the condition. The Delta Sky Club element is written for travel on an eligible Delta flight. [3]
  • Whether you are inside a cap. The Delta Sky Club element is a set number of visits, and the card's airline fee credit and other credits are counted per calendar year, so a visit near a year boundary deserves a second look. [3]
  • How you intend to pay, if you are paying. The Platinum Card's airline fee credit covers up to $200 per calendar year of incidental fees charged by one selected qualifying airline, and airport lounge day-passes are listed among those incidental fees. [3] Amex says it relies on airlines to submit correct information about the transaction and that you should call the number on the back of the card if a qualifying credit has not appeared after eight weeks; qualifying airlines are subject to change. [3]
  • Whether the offer still exists. United states it has no liability for partner withdrawals from the programme, including cancellations caused by partner withdrawals. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • The Amex list is specific to that card: Centurion Lounges, a Delta Sky Club allowance tied to eligible Delta flights, Priority Pass after enrollment, and other select partner lounges. It is not a statement about lounge access on other cards. [3]
  • United's rules bind MileagePlus benefits and expressly leave partner offers to the applicable partner's terms and conditions. [5] They also state that United may change the rules, benefits and conditions of participation at any time, with or without notice, and that accumulated benefits do not create vested rights. [5]
  • Amex attaches limitations and terms to the card's benefits, and states that qualifying airlines for the fee credit are subject to change. [3]
