How to earn, spend and check GHA DISCOVERY Dollars expiry

GHA DISCOVERY Dollars (D$) are the reward currency of GHA DISCOVERY, the hotel loyalty programme operated by GHA Loyalty FZCO for a list of member hotel brands, earned as a percentage of a member's Net Eligible Spend and redeemed against hotel charges. Base earning runs from 4% for Silver members to 7% for Titanium members, and D$ issued at each tier stay valid for 12 to 24 months. [3]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • D$ are a percentage of Net Eligible Spend, from 4% at Silver to 7% at Titanium, and Base D$ expire 12 to 24 months after issue depending on the tier that earned them. [3]
  • D$ are redeemed against eligible charges on the member's folio during a stay, and they cannot be redeemed against stays booked at ineligible rates such as third-party online travel agency rates. [3]
  • The alliance sets the earning and expiry rules, but individual member hotels decide many on-property details, and brands run their own D$ promotions. [3] [1]

How do you earn GHA DISCOVERY Dollars on a stay?

Base D$ are calculated after checkout as a percentage of the Net Eligible Spend on a member's folio, and the percentage is the one attached to the member's tier at check-in, not the tier held when the booking was made. [3] Net Eligible Spend is spend after promotions and before taxes, tips and fees, and it excludes any D$ redeemed on the transaction. [3]

Silver4%12 months, or 6 months for D$ issued before 1 January 2024 [3]
Gold5%18 months [3]
Platinum6%24 months [3]
Titanium7%24 months [3]

Two small mechanics matter. The D$ figure is rounded down to a whole number after the percentage is applied, and a stay that produces more than zero but less than D$5 is credited at D$5, while dining earns a D$1 floor instead. [3] Base and promotional D$ are credited within 48 hours of the transaction posting. [3]

The booking channel changes the payout. A member booking through GHA DISCOVERY, a brand or hotel website or app, a contact centre or the hotel directly receives the full percentage for their tier, whereas a booking on a non-direct channel can earn up to 100% fewer D$, at GHA's discretion. [3] The room must be in the member's own name with the membership number given at booking, check-in or check-out; up to two rooms under one name count, rooms booked at different hotels for the same dates do not, and two members sharing a reservation under Sharer status each earn on the share of the bill they pay. [3] Day-use rooms booked on an eligible rate also earn. [3]

Dining earns separately. At a Participating Restaurant that is not attached to a hotel, or where the member is not staying, D$ are calculated on Net Eligible Spend settled through a dedicated payment method at the outlet, and the programme lists these venues under "Dine with D$". [3] The programme spans 1,000 hotels, resorts and palaces across more than 60 brands in 100 countries. [1]

How do you spend DISCOVERY Dollars at member hotels?

D$ can be redeemed for eligible transactions a member pays on the folio at any time during a stay at the hotel. [3] There is a general loyalty currency explainer if you want the concept behind this kind of balance. The programme's homepage also advertises booking online with D$. [1]

D$ are earned and redeemed on the same base of member spend, so any D$ applied to a bill reduce the amount of Net Eligible Spend that earns new D$ on that transaction. [3] Promotional D$ sit alongside Base D$: they can be a fixed amount or a different percentage, and any promotion that should have applied but did not can be claimed up to one month after the date it should have been earned. [3] Current brand campaigns include 2X D$ at PURO Hotels in Poland, triple D$ at OUTRIGGER Phi Phi Island Resort and a D$50 reward with Minor Hotels. [1]

Where can't you use GHA DISCOVERY Dollars?

The clearest restriction is the rate you book. D$ may not be redeemed against stays on ineligible rates, which include third-party online travel agency rates such as Expedia, Booking.com or Hotels.com, tour operator and charter rates, airline crew and travel-industry staff rates, other discounted rates, and complimentary, bartered or voucher-based nights. [3] The same list governs earning: a first stay on an ineligible rate may receive D$ as a promotion, but later ineligible stays earn no D$ and collect no tier credit. [3]

The balance is also tied to the account. A member who ends their own membership forfeits all unredeemed D$ immediately, and those D$ cannot be reinstated or transferred. [3] If GHA terminates the programme, members have up to three months from the notification date to redeem what they hold. [3]

When do GHA DISCOVERY Dollars expire?

Base D$ carry the expiry attached to the tier at which they were issued, and they lapse at 11:59 pm Central European Time on that date. [3] A later upgrade or downgrade does not move the expiry date already stamped on a balance, so D$ earned as Silver keep their shorter life even if the member reaches Platinum. [3] Promotional D$ are different: each offer states its own expiry, which may not follow the Base D$ timetable. [3]

GHA can also extend validity at its discretion. It did so once for members whose D$ were due to expire between 28 February 2026 and 30 September 2026, moving them to 30 September 2026 and describing the change as a one-time response to travel disruption rather than an amendment to the rules. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Hotel-level variation. Benefits are "provided at the discretion of GHA and the Member Brand Hotels", and things like the welcome amenity are set by each hotel, so what appears on a folio can differ between brands. [3] The list of member brands can change without notice, and stays after a hotel leaves the programme no longer qualify. [3]
  • Long stays. On an eligible rate, a stay longer than 30 nights earns D$ on eligible room and non-room revenue for the first 30 nights; beyond that, room revenue stops earning while non-room revenue continues to. [3] Guests in residences and apartments may not be eligible to earn D$ at all. [3]
  • Caps and currency. GHA may cap the D$ issued on a very large folio — its terms give the example of treating Net Eligible Spend above US$50,000 as exactly US$50,000. [3] Where a hotel does not use US dollars, spend is converted at a rate GHA selects, which may differ from the rate applied on the folio. [3]
  • No-shows and inactive accounts. A guaranteed reservation that is never checked into earns no D$ even if the card is charged. [3] An account may be treated as inactive if, over the previous 24 months, the member has not stayed an eligible night, recorded no Net Eligible Spend and redeemed no D$; GHA may then close the membership and cancel accrued D$. [3]
  • Rules can move. GHA reserves the right to change earning percentages and the definition of Net Eligible Spend without prior notice. [3]

Frequently asked questions

Do GHA DISCOVERY Dollars expire?

Yes. Base D$ expire 12 months after issue for Silver, 18 months for Gold and 24 months for Platinum and Titanium, at 11:59 pm Central European Time, and promotional D$ follow the expiry stated in each offer. [3]

Can I earn D$ on a stay booked through Booking.com or Expedia?

Those are listed as ineligible rates. A first stay on such a rate may receive D$ on a promotional basis, but later ineligible stays earn nothing and no tier credit, and D$ cannot be redeemed against them. [3]

Is there a minimum amount of D$ I can earn?

A stay that generates more than zero but less than D$5 is credited with D$5, and a restaurant transaction below D$1 is credited with D$1. [3]

What happens to my D$ if I close my GHA DISCOVERY account?

Unredeemed D$ are forfeited or cancelled immediately and cannot be reinstated or transferred. [3] If the programme itself ends, members get up to three months from the notification to redeem their balance. [3]
