COMPARISON

Marriott vs Wyndham: hotel points pooling rules

Hotel points pooling is a loyalty-programme rule that would let several members hold points, awards or free-night certificates in one shared balance. The two programmes compared here go the other way: Marriott Bonvoy says its accounts are individual and may not be shared, jointly held or transferred except as expressly permitted [2], and Wyndham Rewards says members may not maintain more than one account or share accounts [6].

Key takeaways

  • Both programmes tie points and awards to one named member: Marriott Bonvoy accounts are individual and may not be shared, jointly held, sold, bartered or transferred except as expressly permitted [2], and Wyndham Rewards members may not maintain more than one account or share accounts [6].
  • Marriott Bonvoy does allow member-to-member point transfers where its rules permit them, subject to conditions, limits, account-standing, documentation and verification requirements [2].
  • Wyndham Rewards says its points cannot be sold, bartered or transferred by a member or any other party except where explicitly authorised, and lists transferring or commercially distributing points in breach of its terms among the conduct that can end a membership and cancel points [6].
  • Moving points between members does not keep a Bonvoy account active, because gifting, transferring or receiving points is not Qualifying Activity [2]; at Wyndham Rewards, redemption or transfer activity that changes the point balance does count as Account Activity [6].

Do Marriott Bonvoy and Wyndham Rewards allow points pooling?

Marriott Bonvoy's Program Rules, updated October 2026, describe accounts as individual and intended for individual membership only: points, awards, status and other value belong to the member whose name appears on the account and may not be shared, jointly held, sold, bartered or transferred except as expressly permitted in those rules [2]. Wyndham Rewards' Terms and Conditions, effective 30 September 2026 and governing participation worldwide, state that members may not maintain more than one account or share accounts [6].

Where more than one Marriott Bonvoy account has been assigned to or used by the same individual, the company may combine, merge, suspend or cancel the duplicate accounts and adjust the associated points, awards, benefits, activity and transaction history [2]. That provision is aimed at duplicate accounts belonging to one person rather than at a balance shared between two members [2].

Wyndham Rewards points have no cash value and, except where explicitly authorised in its terms, cannot be sold, bartered or transferred by a member or any other party (other than the sponsor or its authorised agents) during or after the member's life, by operation of law or otherwise [6]. The sponsor may terminate or suspend a membership and cancel points where a member transfers, sells, barters, commercially distributes or otherwise misuses points, member-level benefits, free nights, points-and-cash discounted nights or other rewards [6].

Can points move to another person's account?

Marriott Bonvoy permits transfers only where its rules expressly allow them, and every permitted transfer is subject to the applicable conditions, limits, account-standing requirements, documentation and verification procedures, including the member-to-member transfer provision in Section 2.8 [2]. Limited transfers upon death or divorce may be permitted only as expressly authorised by the company, subject to documentation and verification, and its decisions on those transfers are at its sole discretion and final [2]. Points, awards or benefits sold, bartered, transferred, assigned, obtained, issued, redeemed or used in breach of the rules may be void, confiscated, cancelled, refused, reversed or deducted [2]. The transfer rules are examined programme by programme in Marriott Bonvoy points sharing.

Wyndham Rewards sets the default the other way round: points cannot be transferred unless its terms explicitly say so, and that restriction covers transfers after the member's death and transfers by operation of law [6]. Where a member exchanges Wyndham Rewards points for the currency of a partner travel programme, the value, redemption and expiration of that partner currency are governed by that programme's own terms [6].

How do shared rooms and free nights work for a family?

Marriott Bonvoy counts charges on the member's folio and on up to two additional guest rooms with the same check-in and check-out dates as Qualifying Charges, provided the member stays in one of the reserved rooms as the registered guest, gives the membership number at reservation or check-in, and pays for the charges [2]. Rooms can therefore be credited to one account on a family trip without opening a second membership, but the earning stays on the member's own account [2].

Wyndham Rewards defines a Qualified Stay as one or more consecutive nights at the same participating property, and a member who checks out and checks back in to the same property on the same day is treated as having a single stay [6]. Complimentary nights, and nights obtained using any form of free night, are not Qualified Stays and do not earn points or partner currency [6]. Free-night redemption requirements are quoted per bedroom per night, and a member must hold enough points for every bedroom in the accommodation being booked; the requirement varies by property and can be as high as 30,000 points per bedroom [7].

Exceptions and limits

  • Marriott Bonvoy members need Qualifying Activity at least once every 24 months to retain accumulated points, awards and other benefits, and 24 consecutive months without it forfeits everything accumulated, with no reinstatement [2]. An account inactive for five consecutive years may be deactivated [2].
  • Points in Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Elite Status accounts are not currently subject to expiration, although the programme says it may apply an expiration policy to those accounts in future [2].
  • If a Marriott Bonvoy member cancels an account, unredeemed points, awards, free night awards and benefits are cancelled or forfeited immediately and may not be reinstated or transferred, except as expressly permitted by the company or required by law [2].
  • Wyndham Rewards points expire four years after the date they are posted, unless they are forfeited or cancelled earlier for inactivity [6]. All accrued points may be cancelled or forfeited where there is no Account Activity for approximately, but never less than, 18 consecutive months [6], and an account with no Account Activity for 60 consecutive months may be terminated with the remaining points forfeited [6].
  • Points earned by Wyndham Rewards Earner Premier cardmembers do not expire under the inactivity section while the card account is open and in good standing [6]. Rules and definitions explained elsewhere are collected in the frequent flyer glossary.

Frequently asked questions

Can a couple keep their Marriott Bonvoy points in one account?

Bonvoy accounts are individual and may not be shared or jointly held, so points move only where the rules expressly allow, for example through the member-to-member transfer provision in Section 2.8 [2].

Does a points transfer count as account activity?

At Marriott Bonvoy it does not, because gifting, transferring or receiving points is not Qualifying Activity [2]. At Wyndham Rewards, Account Activity includes point earning and redemption or transfer activity that changes the point balance [6].

Can I send Wyndham Rewards points to a family member?

Only where the terms explicitly authorise it; otherwise points cannot be sold, bartered or transferred, and transferring or commercially distributing them in breach of the terms can lead to a terminated account and cancelled points [6].

What happens to points when a member dies?

Marriott Bonvoy may permit limited transfers on death or divorce only as expressly authorised, with documentation, at its sole discretion [2]. Wyndham Rewards points cannot be transferred during or after the member's life, by operation of law or otherwise, except where explicitly authorised [6].
