How to use the JR West Setouchi Area Pass
JR West Setouchi Area Pass is a seven-day rail pass sold by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) that gives unlimited travel on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, on limited express and local trains in the Setouchi region, and on the JR West Miyajima Ferry, for 22,000 yen per adult and 11,000 yen per child. [1] [4] It is sold only to travellers who hold a passport issued by a foreign government and enter Japan as a Temporary Visitor. [1]
Facts checked: 18 October 2026
Key takeaways
- The pass is sold in one duration — 7 consecutive days — at 22,000 yen for adults and 11,000 yen for children aged 6 to 11, with age taken on the date the exchange order is issued or the pass is bought. [1] [4]
- It covers ordinary-car reserved and non-reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, ordinary-car seats on limited express trains such as HARUKA, SHIOKAZE and NAMPU, and Special Rapid, Rapid and Local trains on JR West and JR Shikoku conventional lines. [1]
- It cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Tokyo, or the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo. [1]
- A foreign passport and Temporary Visitor entry status are both required, and the passport has to be shown to collect the pass. [1]
What does the JR West Setouchi Area Pass cover?
Within the area shown on JR West's route map, the pass gives unlimited rides. [1] On the shinkansen it covers ordinary-car reserved seats and ordinary-car non-reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. [1] In the valid area it also covers reserved and non-reserved ordinary-car seats on limited express trains, with HARUKA, SHIOKAZE and NAMPU named as examples, and on Special Rapid, Rapid and Local services run by JR West and JR Shikoku. [1] JR West lists Osaka, Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi and Fukuoka among the destinations the pass reaches, and names Kansai, Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Takamatsu, Matsuyama and Fukuoka (Hakata) as areas where it can be used. [1]
Higher classes sit outside the pass. Green Car (first class) and sleeper seats require their own tickets plus separate express tickets, and any additional ticket must be bought at a JR West station before boarding. [1] The paid A Seat service on Special Rapid trains in the Kansai area also carries a separate charge. [1]
Ferry coverage is narrow. Among the ferry services on the pass page, only the JR West Miyajima Ferry is valid, and passengers visiting Miyajima by that ferry pay a 100 yen Miyajima visitation tax on boarding, as stated on the page as of October 2023. [1] [4] The high-speed boat services of the Shodoshima Ferry cannot be used with the pass. [1] Inclusions are not uniform across the JR West range: JR West notes that its All Area Pass additionally covers bus and certain ferries, so bus and ferry coverage has to be checked against the terms of the specific pass rather than carried over from another one. [5]
How do you reserve seats with the Setouchi Area Pass?
Reserved-seat tickets can be booked at a ticket vending machine or a station ticket office, and online for passes that were themselves reserved through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION. [1] JR West asks passengers to book reserved seats before boarding, and notes that non-reserved seating is not offered on trains that are entirely reserved. [1] Where a pass allows unlimited seat reservations, seats must be reserved at a JR ticket office from the seventh booking onwards. [1]
Oversized baggage has a rule of its own. Since 20 May 2020, baggage measuring more than 160 cm but less than 250 cm on three sides must travel in a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area on the Sanyo Shinkansen, and a traveller holding a non-reserved JR West pass needs a separate Unlimited Ride Oversized Baggage Ticket, sold at ticket offices in major JR West stations. [1]
How much does the Setouchi Area Pass cost, and where do you buy it?
| Pass | Adult (12 and over) | Child (6–11) |
|---|---|---|
| 7-day | 22,000 yen | 11,000 yen |
Age is taken at the date the exchange order is issued or the pass is purchased, and prices are subject to change. [1] [4] JR West states that the information displayed, prices included, is current as of 1 August 2024. [1]
Three purchase routes are listed. [1] An exchange order — a paper MCO or an E-TICKET — can be bought at a travel agency outside Japan and must be exchanged within three months of issue, with the passport presented and an application completed on arrival. [1] A pass can also be reserved through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, where payment must be made by credit card, station payment is not accepted, and virtual or numberless credit cards cannot be used. [1] Collection in Japan then needs the reservation number, a four-digit identification number set at booking, the credit card used and the passport, and a passport with an IC chip is required to collect at a ticket vending machine, with other passports handled at the ticket office. [1] Finally, passes are sold at travel agencies in Japan, up to one month before the first day of use. [1]
Bookings through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION open one month before boarding, from 10:00 am Japan Standard Time on the same date of the preceding month. [1] The price is set by the purchase date rather than the exchange or travel date, and a traveller cannot buy or exchange more than one of the same pass for the same period of use. [1]
Can you use the Setouchi Area Pass outside the Setouchi area?
The shinkansen coverage ends where the Sanyo Shinkansen does: Tokaido Shinkansen services between Shin-Osaka and Tokyo and Kyushu Shinkansen services between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo are excluded. [1]
Validity runs in consecutive days, and the pass is sold and used all year round. [1] It is valid from 0:00 on the start date to 24:00 on the last day, all in Japan Standard Time. [1] If the validity period ends while a passenger is still travelling on the last day, the fare remains valid into the following day so long as the passenger does not leave the station, and the ticket remains valid so long as the passenger does not get off the train. [1] Once the exchange order has been exchanged, the start date, duration and pass type cannot be changed, and the validity period is not extended when trains are unavailable or delayed. [1]
Exceptions, children and refunds
- Who cannot use it. The pass is for holders of a passport issued by a foreign government who enter Japan under Temporary Visitor status, and Japanese nationals are excluded, including those holding permanent residence abroad. [1]
- Passport duties. The pass is valid only for its holder, the passport must be carried and shown to JR staff on request, and a lost or stolen pass is not reissued. [1]
- Children. An adult or child pass holder may accompany up to two children aged 1 to 5 free of charge, a third infant and any beyond that each need a child pass, and babies under one year old travel free. [1] A child pass is required where an accompanied infant occupies a reserved seat alone or travels alone. [1]
- Refunds. An exchange order that was never exchanged is refunded by the overseas agency that sold it, subject to a handling fee. [1] An exchanged pass can be refunded only at ticket counters at exchange locations in Japan, for the sale price minus a handling fee of 10%, with a minimum of 220 yen per pass. [1] No refund is given once a pass has started to be used or has expired, or because trains were unavailable or delayed. [1]
- Language of the rules. Where foreign-language versions of JR West's Conditions of Carriage differ from the Japanese version, the Japanese version prevails. [1]
