How to earn KrisFlyer miles on Star Alliance partner flights

Earning KrisFlyer miles on Star Alliance partner flights is the part of the KrisFlyer programme that governs miles, and separately Elite miles, for travel on airlines other than Singapore Airlines. Singapore Airlines' terms define programme partners as the companies with which members can earn KrisFlyer miles, and reserve the right to add or remove a partner at the airline's own discretion [6]. Alliance membership alone does not settle whether a flight credits: Star Alliance lists 26 member airlines alongside a separate category of Connecting Partners [2], and the KrisFlyer terms say mileage accrual rates may vary between partner airlines [6].

Key takeaways

  • KrisFlyer miles on partner flights are set by Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer terms, which say accrual rates may vary by partner airline and send members to an online table of accrual levels [6].
  • Award and redemption tickets, infant fares, industry and agency discount tickets, other special discounted tickets and charter flights earn no KrisFlyer miles [6]; redemption tickets earn no Elite miles either [3].
  • The operating carrier matters: no KrisFlyer miles are awarded on codeshares marketed by Singapore Airlines and operated by airlines that are not KrisFlyer partners [6], and individual airlines may exclude accrual on certain flights such as codeshares [6].
  • The distance formula is not the only basis: for itineraries made up only of Scoot-operated flights booked on FlyScoot.com and/or the Scoot mobile app, KrisFlyer miles are awarded on the value of the fare, excluding taxes, and selected ancillaries paid with a credit or debit card, rather than on distance travelled [6].
  • Crediting depends on the member being identified — quoting the membership number at reservation and showing the card when using the airline's services [6].
  • Elite miles are a separate currency, earned on Singapore Airlines, Star Alliance partner airlines and Virgin Australia codeshares, subject to conditions [6].

Where partner accrual comes from

KrisFlyer describes two broad ways of earning: flying Singapore Airlines group carriers, and transactions with partners in everyday spending [5]. For flights, the rules sit in the programme terms rather than in the alliance's own pages. Partners can be added or removed at Singapore Airlines' discretion, only certain transactions with a partner are eligible to earn, and some partners set their own earning or crediting procedures that members are told to follow [6]. The FAQ confirms the principle for airlines, stating that members can earn and redeem KrisFlyer miles on partner airlines and pointing to separate accrual-level pages for those carriers [3].

Where a flight qualifies, the amount is not a flat rate, and the basis of calculation is not the same for every carrier. For travel on Singapore Airlines and on participating airlines other than Scoot, KrisFlyer miles are awarded for tickets in Suites and in First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class and are calculated on the actual distance travelled, as calculated using the great circle distance formula, plus other bonuses when applicable; for connecting flights that require a change to another flight number, each sector within the trip is measured on its own actual distance [6]. Scoot-only itineraries are the exception: for itineraries involving only Scoot-operated flights booked on FlyScoot.com and/or the Scoot mobile app, KrisFlyer miles are awarded on the value of the fare (excluding taxes) and selected ancillaries paid with a credit or debit card, not on distance travelled [6]. For the avoidance of doubt, an itinerary that combines Singapore Airlines-operated flights and Scoot-operated flights is measured on the actual distance travelled under the great circle distance formula from the airport of departure to the airport of arrival, together with fare class and other applicable bonuses [6]. Flight miles go to the member who travels, whoever paid, and are earned once per flight for each person however many seats were bought [6].

Operating carrier and codeshares

The terms address the carrier in two places. KrisFlyer miles are not awarded on codeshare flights that are marketed by Singapore Airlines and operated by airlines that are not KrisFlyer partners [6]. Separately, individual airlines may exclude mileage accrual on certain flights, such as codeshare flights [6]. Both statements turn on who operates the aircraft and on the marketing arrangement rather than on alliance membership [6].

The alliance's own structure adds a layer. Star Alliance describes itself as uniting 26 airlines with access to more than 1,150 airports in 190 countries, and it presents Connecting Partners — Juneyao Air is named — as a category distinct from member airlines [2]. On the tier side, the KrisFlyer elite qualification page says Elite miles can be earned by flying Singapore Airlines, Scoot or other designated airlines, and also through Star Alliance airlines, the Star Alliance Connecting Partner Juneyao Air and other designated airline partners [4]. A footnote to that statement sets out the arrangements it covers: Virgin Atlantic-operated routes other than transatlantic ones; Singapore Airlines codeshares operated by Virgin Australia within Australia, across the Tasman and between Australia and the Pacific Islands; and Singapore Airlines codeshares with Vistara within India. The same footnote states that it does not apply to Alaska Airlines, JetBlue and Olympic Air flights [4].

Fare classes and exclusions

Some ticket types are excluded outright. The terms name industry discount, agency discount, award tickets or redemption tickets, infant fares and other special discounted tickets specified by Singapore Airlines or airline partners as earning no KrisFlyer miles, and charter flights earn none either [6]. Redemption travel is excluded on the Elite side too: members do not earn KrisFlyer miles, Elite miles or PPS Value when they redeem for an award ticket, the upgraded cabin on a redemption upgrade earns nothing while the original booking class continues to earn [3].

For Singapore Airlines' own flights the terms publish accrual levels by booking class, running from 200% of miles flown in Suites and First (A, F) down to 50% in Economy for Q, N, V, K and G [6], and the FAQ puts it more simply, saying miles can be earned on most booking classes on Singapore Airlines flights [3]. The terms say accrual rates may vary for partner airlines and direct members to the online table of accrual levels or to KrisFlyer Membership Services [6], and the FAQ links to separate accrual-level pages for partner carriers [3]. A reader therefore cannot confirm from these sources whether a particular booking class on a particular Star Alliance carrier earns, or at what percentage.

Elite miles are also class-sensitive: by default no Elite miles are earned for tickets booked in G class on Singapore Airlines [6].

Crediting and missing miles

Crediting depends on the member being identified at the time of travel. A member must quote the membership number when making the reservation and show the membership card when using the services of Singapore Airlines or a programme partner, and missing-mile requests are only entertained where that was done [6]. Members must also actually travel: unused tickets, unconsumed products and returned products and services earn nothing [6].

Partner transactions take longer to post than Singapore Airlines' own. The FAQ says miles from partners normally appear two to four weeks after the flight, or six to eight weeks after using a non-airline partner, and that members should contact KrisFlyer if nothing has appeared after eight weeks [3]. The terms set an earlier marker for claims, asking members to allow two weeks for Singapore Airlines flights and four weeks for partner airline flights before raising a missing-mile claim [6].

Claims must be submitted within six months of the transaction date [6], and for airline partners can be made online by selecting "Other Airlines" and supplying the flight details [3]. Members are also asked to notify KrisFlyer of any discrepancy in a transaction within three months, and Singapore Airlines says it is not obliged to correct under-crediting that is not brought to its notice within that period [6].

Exceptions and limits

  • Codeshares marketed by Singapore Airlines but operated by airlines that are not KrisFlyer partners are excluded from both currencies: the terms say no KrisFlyer miles and no Elite miles are awarded on them [6].
  • Elite miles depend on the flight being credited to KrisFlyer. The elite qualification page says no Elite miles are earned if the member credits the miles elsewhere or if the fare is not eligible for mileage accrual, and that tier bonus and promotional bonus miles do not count towards Elite miles [4] [6].
  • On a ticket paid partly with KrisFlyer miles, Elite miles are earned only on the cash portion actually paid, excluding taxes, and a ticket paid entirely in miles earns no Elite miles [4]. The terms apply the same cash-proportion principle to KrisFlyer miles on tickets paid with miles [6].
  • Accounts are personal: pooling of KrisFlyer miles or status credits is not permitted, and miles cannot be transferred between members' accounts except for accounts held by minors, subject to account linking and service fees [6].
  • Termination or permanent exclusion revokes accrued KrisFlyer miles and status credits without compensation [6].
