How to understand Qatar Airways Privilege Club status

Qatar Airways Privilege Club is the frequent flyer programme of Qatar Airways, and its published terms name four member tiers: Burgundy, Silver, Gold and Platinum [3]. A member's tier and points sit in their own Privilege Club account, and the programme rules govern how that account is opened, linked and shared [3] [5].

Key takeaways

  • Privilege Club status is recorded in four tiers — Burgundy, Silver, Gold and Platinum — and the tier names appear directly in the programme's published terms [3].
  • Members deal in two things: Avios, which are pooled and redeemed, and Qpoints, which a member earns in their own right rather than through a Family & Friends group [4].
  • A member who separates from a Family & Friends group keeps their membership number but begins again at Burgundy [4].
  • A Privilege Club account can be linked to a British Airways Executive Club account from 30 days after the Privilege Club account is created, and a maximum of twice in any 50-year period [5].

What are the Privilege Club tiers?

The programme's terms name four tiers: Burgundy, Silver, Gold and Platinum [3]. The tier names are used as eligibility conditions elsewhere in the rules: a Burgundy, Silver, Gold or Platinum member may create a My List only if their Privilege Club account was created at least thirty days earlier [3]. Gold and Platinum members get a wider redemption allowance, because they may book award flights both for people on their My List and for any additional individual of their choice [3].

Burgundy is the tier a member returns to after leaving a Family & Friends group: the separated member's new account keeps the existing membership number and begins at the Burgundy membership tier [4].

Who earns Qpoints in Privilege Club?

The programme's terms refer to members earning Avios and Qpoints, and an adult who leaves a Family & Friends group is described as starting to earn Avios and Qpoints as a main member outside the group [4]. Inside a group the position is different: flights and non-flight activity by group members do not earn Qpoints [4].

Avios do accrue, but only into the main member's account, and only after travel is completed [4]. Group members earn base Avios for eligible activity and do not receive the additional or bonus Avios that depend on the main member's tier [4]. Only the main member can redeem Avios, for any member of the group [4].

How does linking a British Airways Executive Club account work?

These rules are effective as at 29 January 2025 and cover the linking of British Airways Executive Club and Qatar Airways Privilege Club accounts [5]. To become a linked member, a person must be at least 18 years old and a member of both programmes, and the personal details on the two accounts — first name, last name, date of birth and email address — must match [5]. Linking is done through ba.com, qatarairways.com or the Qatar Airways app, and the feature becomes available 30 days after the account creation date [5].

Only one Privilege Club account and one British Airways Executive Club account can be linked at any time, and a Privilege Club account can be linked to a British Airways Executive Club account a maximum of twice in any 50-year period [5]. Once linked, Avios move in either direction without a fee, at a rate of 1:1, with no minimum or maximum number and no limit on the number of transfers apart from cases of suspected fraud [5]. Linked members may also redeem from either or both accounts without moving Avios first, choosing at checkout whether to draw on both proportionally, on Privilege Club first, or on British Airways Executive Club first [5]. Accounts can be unlinked at any time [5].

Exceptions and limits

  • Group lock-in. Every member who joins a Family & Friends group is subject to a six-month lock-in period during which they cannot leave or be removed, and only the main member can remove group members afterwards [4].
  • Children in a group. Children under 18 can join a Family & Friends group only if a parent or guardian is the main member or a group member, and infants are not permitted at all [4]. All Avios earned by child members go directly to the main member's account [4].
  • My List restrictions. Only adults aged 18 or above may be invited to a My List, a member may belong to only one list at a time, and members of an existing Family & Friends group cannot be added [3]. Added members must stay for at least six months [3].
  • Linked-account servicing. Changes and refunds of award tickets and Cash + Avios tickets are handled offline, and refunded Avios are credited to the linked member's Privilege Club account [5].
  • Scope. These rules apply to Qatar Airways Privilege Club accounts and, where stated, to linked British Airways Executive Club accounts; the tier rules of other airlines' programmes are set by those programmes [5].
