How to Redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards

Chase Ultimate Rewards is the rewards programme attached to eligible Chase credit cards, and its points can be used for any available reward option, which Chase says may include cash, gift cards, travel booked through Chase Travel, a transfer of points to participating frequent travel programmes, and paying with points for products or services. [2] [3]

Key takeaways

  • Chase's Ultimate Rewards page lists cash back, travel, gift cards, Pay with Points at Amazon.com and PayPal, Apple purchases through The Shops at Chase, Pay Yourself Back and transfers to travel partners with select cards as ways to use points. [2]
  • In the programme agreement checked here, points redeemed for cash, gift cards and travel are worth one cent each, so 100 points equals $1, while other redemption options may be worth more or less. [3]
  • Transfers to participating frequent travel programmes go in 1,000-point increments and cannot be reversed once completed. [3]
  • Points do not expire while the account is open, but a closed account or a change in account status can remove them. [3]

Where the points can go

Chase's home page describes its cards as offering rewards that can be redeemed for cash back or travel-related perks. [1] The Ultimate Rewards page presents the redemption menu in a few groups. [2] Travel is booked through Chase Travel, which Chase describes as its own websites, phone numbers and service channels that include chasetravel.com and chase.com/ultimaterewards. [3] Chase's consumer page advises booking travel through Chase and says the site gives the flexibility to use points, the card, or both. [2] If a booking costs more points than the account holds, the remainder can be paid with the card, and most travel can also be booked through Chase Travel with no points at all. [3]

Cash can be taken as an account statement credit or as an electronic deposit into an eligible Chase account located in the United States, and Chase says points can also be used to fund select third-party wallets or accounts where that is available. [3] Cash can be requested on chase.com/ultimaterewards, by calling the number on the back of the card, or at a Chase branch, and a statement credit reduces the balance without removing the obligation to pay the minimum payment or remaining statement balance by the due date. [3]

Gift cards are ordered through the same three channels and are valid at participating merchants only, under the issuer's own terms, which can address expiry and non-usage fees. [3] Chase's consumer page says the gift card catalogue covers more than 200 brands. [2]

Pay with Points lets a cardholder use points for all or part of an eligible order at Amazon.com or at PayPal checkout, and Chase's consumer page describes the redemption as instant. [2] Paying directly with a third-party merchant requires enrolment or self-registration with that merchant, may require authorising Chase to share account information, and can be worth less than reward options offered directly through the programme. [3] The consumer page also lists Pay Yourself Back, described as a statement credit on one or more eligible purchases, Apple purchases at The Shops at Chase, and Chase Dining, where points can be redeemed for takeout and culinary experiences. [2]

What a point is worth

Chase states plainly that redemption values for reward options vary. [3] In the agreement checked here, using points for cash, gift cards or travel gives each point a value of $.01, so 100 points equals $1 in redemption value, while other reward options may be worth more or less than that. [3] Chase may also run special promotions with a redemption value above the one-cent cash value, with the offer details, duration and any expiry set out at the time. [3] Because the rate is not fixed across options, the useful comparison is the cents-per-point figure for each redemption, and flexible points programmes are best judged option by option. Minimum and maximum point amounts may apply to a redemption, and Chase says it will disclose any such limits and extra terms before points are used. [3] Minimum point amounts may apply to some travel bookings in particular. [3]

Transfers to travel programmes

Chase's consumer page says points can be transferred to airline and hotel travel partners with select cards, so the feature is not attached to every Ultimate Rewards card. [2] The agreement checked here sets the mechanics: transfers are made in 1,000-point increments, only to participating frequent travel programme accounts belonging to the cardholder or, for a business account, to an owner of the company who is listed as an authorised user. [3] A point transfer fee may be charged, and Chase says it will confirm whether a fee applies and how much before the transfer is made. [3] Most transfer requests process by the next business day, but Chase allows up to seven business days depending on the travel programme, and the details supplied must match the travel programme's records or the transfer may be delayed or blocked. [3] Once points arrive, they are governed by that programme's terms rather than by Chase, and the transfer cannot be refunded or cancelled. [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Once redeemed, it is final. A completed redemption is treated as final and may not be cancelled unless the terms say otherwise. [3] Sales and use taxes, fees, surcharges and shipping are the cardholder's responsibility, and some items cannot be shipped to PO boxes or foreign addresses. [3]
  • Phone bookings. A service fee may be charged for calling Chase Travel to book, and the amount is disclosed before booking. [3]
  • Availability can change without notice. Chase says it will not give prior notice when the selection or availability of items within a redemption option changes, and that future availability of a specific item is not guaranteed. [3] Participating frequent travel programmes are also subject to change without notice. [3]
  • Combining balances. Points can be moved only to another Chase card with Ultimate Rewards belonging to the cardholder, one member of the household, or the company owner, and not if either account is barred from earning or using points. [3]
  • Losing points. Points do not expire while the account is open, but they are lost immediately if the account status changes or the account is closed for misuse, fraud or the other reasons listed in the agreement, and Chase does not reinstate them unless it made an error. [3] If the account is closed for another reason, or Chase cancels the programme, the cardholder gets at least 30 days to use the points. [3] If the account is closed because of death, points are automatically redeemed for cash as a statement credit. [3] Buying or selling points is listed as misuse. [3]
  • Scope of these values. The one-cent values and transfer rules above come from the Ink Business Preferred Ultimate Rewards programme agreement. [3]
