GUIDE

Start here: Cathay

Start here: Cathay is a six-step beginner course on the Cathay Membership Programme, in which members hold an Asia Miles balance to spend on awards and a Status Points balance tied to membership status. [1] [5] It walks through what the programme is, how to join, how earning works, how Asia Miles are used, how status is decided, and how to approach a first award booking. [1] [5]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • The Cathay Membership Programme is provided by Asia Miles Limited, and members see two figures in their account: an Asia Miles balance for awards and a Status Points balance linked to membership status. [1] [5]
  • Asia Miles have followed an activity-based expiry system since 1 January 2020 (time in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China): earning or redeeming at least once every 18 months keeps them live, and each crediting or debiting date moves the expiry date 18 months forward. [6]
  • Status is mid-transition. Every membership period ends at 11.59pm on 31 December 2026, status from 1 January 2027 depends on Status Points earned during calendar 2026, and a single calendar-year cycle plus a new Diamond Exec status begin on 1 January 2027. [4]

Steps 1–2: the programme and joining

The Cathay Membership Programme is provided by Asia Miles Limited, and the terms in force took effect on and from 1 January 2026 (time in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China). [5] Those terms run from enrolment and membership termination through Status Points and membership status, Asia Miles, redemption groups and the separate categories of flight award. [5]

Cathay presents Asia Miles as a currency to earn and spend with "over 800 travel and lifestyle partners", earned on flights, hotels, shopping, dining and wellness. [1] A signed-in member sees the Asia Miles balance and the Status Points balance side by side, alongside a latest-transactions view. [1]

Joining starts with signing up as a Cathay member. [1]

One setting is worth handling early: who you can redeem for. The terms provide for redemption groups [5], and Cathay offers complimentary transfers of miles from a minor in a member's redemption group to that member's own account, without transfer or service fees. [1]

Step 3: how earning works

Cathay lists earning through flights, hotels and car rentals, Cathay Shop and retail partners, dining and wellness partners, each with its own earning page. [1] Miles can also be bought to top up a balance, and gifted to someone else. [1]

The expiry rule is the part beginners most often misread. Since 1 January 2020 (time in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China) Asia Miles have used an activity-based rather than a time-based system: miles stay active as long as the member earns or redeems at least once every 18 months. [6] Each crediting or debiting date extends the expiry date by 18 months, and the clock runs from that posting date rather than from the activity or transaction date. [6] Miles earned under the new system therefore no longer lapse three years after being credited. [6] Cathay summarises the same idea on its Asia Miles page: as long as you are earning miles regularly, your Asia Miles will never expire. [1]

Miles that never arrive are handled separately, through the missing mileage requests section of the terms. [5] For the same steps across other airlines, see start here: airline miles.

Step 4: how Asia Miles are used

Asia Miles can be spent on flights, holidays, products and experiences, and charity donations. [1] On the flight side, Cathay highlights Miles Plus Cash, which lets a member part-pay Cathay or HK Express airfare with miles. [1]

The terms split flight awards into named categories: standard awards, companion ticket awards, upgrade awards and airport upgrade awards, and oneworld multi-carrier awards, alongside priority redemption for discounted flight awards and lounge pass redemptions. [5] Hotel and experience redemptions, Milesback and Miles Top-Up each have their own sections in the same document. [5]

Cardholders of the Cathay World Elite Mastercard get a 10% discount on miles for hotel stay redemptions on Cathay Holidays. [1]

Step 5: how status works

Status is a separate track from spending. The terms treat Status Points and membership status in a section of their own, next to the Asia Miles section. [5] The status names Cathay uses in its change notice are Green, Silver, Gold and Diamond, with Diamond Exec added above Diamond. [4]

2026 is a handover year. All members' membership periods end at 11.59pm on 31 December 2026, and status starting 1 January 2027 is determined by the Status Points earned between 1 January and 31 December 2026. [4] Status held on 31 December 2026 therefore does not carry into 2027 automatically. [4]

From 1 January 2027 (time in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China) the programme moves to one Status Points earning period running 1 January to 31 December, and one membership period ending 31 January of the following year. [4] Status Points will no longer reset to zero each time a member earns a higher status; they will reset at the end of the earning period, subject to rollover. [4] Rollover is capped at 50% of the Status Points required for the status achieved: 300 for Gold, 600 for Diamond and 1,200 for Diamond Exec. [4] Diamond Exec itself requires at least 2,400 Status Points in an earning period. [4]

Concrete benefits sit inside those tiers. Cathay says Silver members who earn 450 Status Points will still receive two Business class lounge passes for themselves or travel companions travelling together on a Cathay Pacific flight. [4] Cathay also says the version of the terms reflecting the 2027 changes will be provided in 2026. [4] For tier and lounge basics across programmes, see start here: status and lounges.

Step 6: planning a first award booking

Cathay's flight navigation lists two entry points for spending miles: "Redeem with miles" and "Pay with Miles Plus Cash". [3]

Three checks make a first booking easier. First, confirm the balance is live under the 18-month rule, because any crediting or debiting date extends expiry by 18 months. [6] Second, confirm who your redemption group covers, since that governs who the booking can be for. [5] [1] Third, decide which award category you are aiming at, from a standard award or companion ticket award to an upgrade award, an airport upgrade award or a oneworld multi-carrier award. [5]

Read those sections before committing miles, and treat any figure from outside Cathay's own pages as unverified. [5]

Exceptions and limits

  • Miles credited on or before 31 December 2019 keep the earlier time-based expiry arrangement; the 18-month activity rule covers miles earned from 1 January 2020. [6]
  • The 18-month extension is calculated from the last crediting or debiting date, not from the date the flight or transaction took place, so a delayed posting moves the expiry date with it. [6]
  • A Membership Holiday requested during 2026 runs only to 31 December 2026 at the latest, and no Status Points can be earned while a member is on one. [4]
  • From 1 January 2027 Gold and Diamond members lose their mid-status benefits, while mid-status benefits earned during 2026 stay valid for 12 months from the date of issue. [4]
  • Enrolment eligibility is governed by the enrolment section of the terms and is not restated in this course. [5]
  • Everything here is Cathay's own programme and terms; other airlines and hotels set their own earning, expiry and status rules, which this page does not describe. [5]
