GUIDE

Start here: Qantas Frequent Flyer

Qantas Frequent Flyer is Qantas's loyalty programme, built on two currencies: Qantas Points, which members earn with Qantas, Jetstar and more than 500 partners and spend on flights, accommodation, car hire and entertainment, and Status Credits, which are earned on eligible flights and move members up the Bronze to Platinum One tiers. [1] [4] Membership and points are subject to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program Terms and Conditions. [1] [2]

Facts checked: 18 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • You must be a Qantas Frequent Flyer member to earn and use Qantas Points, and a joining fee may apply. [1] [2]
  • Qantas Points and Status Credits are separate: a member can earn both on one flight, but Status Credits reset at the start of each Membership Year. [4]
  • Status Credits are earned on eligible Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld member and partner airline flights, and some fare types and booking classes earn none. [4]
  • Several rules are dated: Status Credits on the ground and Status Credit rollover launch on 8 December 2026, and new retention targets and tier benefits follow in 2027. [3] [5]

Steps 1 and 2: the programme and joining

Step 1: what Qantas Frequent Flyer is

The programme does two jobs. It is a points currency: members collect Qantas Points and use them on flights, accommodation, car hire, entertainment and more. [1] It is also a recognition ladder: Qantas says Status and Clubs give members exclusive benefits in the air and on the ground. [1]

The two currencies behave differently. A member may earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on the same flight, but Status Credits are not spendable, and they reset at the start of each new Membership Year. [4] Qantas Points follow their own rules, covered in step 3. [3]

Step 2: how to join

Joining starts on the Qantas Frequent Flyer site. Qantas states that you must be a Qantas Frequent Flyer to earn and use Qantas Points, and that a joining fee may apply; membership and points sit under the programme Terms and Conditions. [1] [2]

Every member has a Membership Year based on the date they joined, and it can be found in My Account or in the Qantas App under MyQFF. [3] [5] That date matters later, because Status Credits, rollover and the new ground-earning rules are all measured by Membership Year. [3] [4]

Step 3: how earning works

Qantas Points. Qantas describes hundreds of ways to earn, from groceries and credit cards to booking a flight or a hotel, across more than 500 partners. [1] Points calculators on the programme site estimate what a flight would earn and how many points a Classic Flight Reward or an upgrade needs. [1]

Status Credits from flying. Status Credits are earned on eligible Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld member and partner airline flights. [4] The amount depends on where you fly, your choice of airline and the fare purchased: the more flexible the fare and the more premium the cabin, the more you earn. [4] Status Credits may not be earned on some fare types and booking classes. [4] Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One members also receive a Status Bonus on eligible flights, applied to the base rate in the Airline Earning Tables, and on Qantas to the actual Qantas Points earned. [4]

Status Credits on the ground, from 8 December 2026. Qantas will add a second route to Status Credits: collecting Qantas Points across ten categories, listed as credit cards, banking and home loans, insurance, car, home utilities, hotels and accommodation, holidays and experiences, everyday shopping, retail and lifestyle, and sustainability, for up to 140 Status Credits each Membership Year. [3] [5] Status Credits are credited within eight weeks of completing a category, and nothing is awarded before the launch date. [5] Activity from the Membership Year a member is in on 8 December 2026 counts, including activity before that date. [5] Excluded points include credit or charge card rewards transferred or converted into Qantas Points, card bonus points, hotel programme points earned outside Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qantas Wellbeing app points, family transfers, QBR points transfers, top-up points and bonus or milestone rewards. [3] [5] Members who do not live in Australia remain eligible, but Qantas warns that location may limit the points they can earn and so the full 140. [5]

Keeping a balance active. Qantas's guidance is to earn or use Qantas Points within 18 months to keep the points balance active, in line with the programme Terms and Conditions. [3]

Steps 4 and 5: using points and a first award booking

Step 4: how to use Qantas Points

Qantas lists flights, accommodation, car hire and entertainment among the ways to spend points. [1] For flights, the programme's calculators are built around the Classic Flight Reward and points upgrades. [1] A Flight Reward finder is live: Qantas says it locates international Classic Flight Rewards across Qantas, Jetstar and partner airlines, and lets members explore by region, view availability by cabin and search several travel periods at once. [3]

Step 5: planning a first award booking

A first booking runs in four moves. Confirm the membership is active, because points can only be earned and used by a member. [1] [2] Then use the points calculator to see how many Qantas Points a Classic Flight Reward requires. [1] Then search the Flight Reward finder by region, cabin and date range to see what is available. [3] Finally, keep the account moving while you plan, by earning or using Qantas Points within 18 months. [3]

Step 6: how status works

The tiers. Qantas Frequent Flyer has five tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One, and Status Credits are what move a member between them. [4]

Attaining. As published on the status page checked, Silver takes 300 Status Credits, Gold 700, Platinum 1,400 and Platinum One 3,600 within a Membership Year; the first three also require at least four eligible flights with a Qantas (QF) or Jetstar (JQ and GK) flight number on the ticket, and Platinum One requires at least 2,700 of its 3,600 on Qantas (QF) flight numbers. [4]

Retaining. The same page lists 250 Status Credits to keep Silver, 600 for Gold, 1,200 for Platinum and 3,600 for Platinum One, with the same flight conditions. [4] Qantas says those retain targets will change to 300, 700 and 1,400 for Silver, Gold and Platinum later in 2027, with no change for Platinum One, and that from 2027 one Status Credit target will serve both to attain and to retain each tier. [3]

What status maps to. Silver corresponds to oneworld Ruby, Gold to oneworld Sapphire, and Platinum and Platinum One to oneworld Emerald. [4] Status Credits also build towards Lifetime status at 7,000 for Lifetime Silver, 14,000 for Lifetime Gold and 75,000 for Lifetime Platinum, and Qantas says Lifetime benefits activate only once a higher current status lapses. [4] [6]

Rollover from 8 December 2026. Eligible members will carry part of their excess Status Credits into the next Membership Year: 25% of the excess above 300 for Silver, capped at 100; 50% of the excess above 700 for Gold, capped at 350; and 50% of the excess above 1,400 for Platinum and above 3,600 for Platinum One, each capped at 500. [3] The rollover is processed automatically, and Qantas describes it as replacing the existing Loyalty Bonus. [3]

Exceptions and timing

  • Members on Status Hold are not eligible for Status Credit rollover, and rolled-over Status Credits do not count towards the Loyalty Bonus, the Platinum and Platinum One Bonus Rewards, Lifetime Status or Status Accelerators. [3]
  • Receiving a rollover does not reset the Qantas Points expiry date; the balance stays active by earning or using points within 18 months. [3]
  • No Status Credits on the ground are awarded before 8 December 2026, and Qantas says it may change which points-earning activity is eligible at any time. [3] [5]
  • Points Club, Points Club Plus and Green Tier are retired on 8 December 2026, and the last day to attain any of them is 7 December 2026. Points Club and Points Club Plus benefits already unlocked continue to the end of the member's next Membership Year. Green Tier benefits conclude on 8 December 2026; a bonus reward that has been earned but not yet selected can still be chosen within 90 days of the qualification date, as either 10,000 Qantas Points or 50 Status Credits. [3]
  • New tier benefits arrive in 2027, including an extra lounge invitation each Membership Year for Silver members plus vouchers and discounts at Qantas Hotels and Holidays, Qantas Marketplace and Qantas Wine for Silver and above; the Loyalty Bonuses earned for every 500 Status Credits on eligible Qantas or Jetstar flights are retired in 2027. [3]
  • Five lifetime milestones are introduced at 25,000, 35,000, 45,000, 55,000 and 65,000 Status Credits, each awarding a bankable year of Platinum status, up to five in total, with no expiry date; banked years are forfeited on reaching Lifetime Platinum and cannot be gifted. [3]
  • The facts here are dated 18 October 2026 and cover the programme terms published by Qantas at that point; later changes to earning, redemption and status rules will not be reflected. [1] [2] [3]
