COURSE

Start here: Scene+ — joining, earning and redeeming points, keeping your account open

Scene+ is a loyalty rewards program operated by Scene Limited Partnership, owned by Scotia Loyalty Ltd., Galaxy Entertainment Inc. and Empire Company Limited, in which Scene+ Points are earned on eligible transactions and redeemed for rewards at participating partners [1]. Membership is free and requires no purchase [1].

Facts checked: 19 October 2026

Key takeaways

  • The course runs in six steps: the programme, joining, earning, redeeming, keeping the account open, and a first action.
  • Scene+ is operated by Scene LP, which is solely responsible for conducting and administering the programme [1].
  • Membership is free, open to individuals aged 14 or older who are residents of Canada, and limited to one open account per person [1].
  • Points are issued when your Scene+ number or card, or a Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine product, is presented before the transaction completes, or when you take up an offer or benefit that earns points [1].
  • An account with more than 24 consecutive months without earning, redeeming or other reward activity may be closed, unless you hold an uncancelled Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine product whose underlying account remains open, and closure forfeits all points [1].

What you will be able to do after this course

  • Explain what Scene+ is, who operates it and which documents govern a membership.
  • Open one account with the details the programme requires, and keep it and its card secure.
  • Describe what a transaction has to look like before points are issued, and where the earning rates live.
  • Redeem points within the stated daily limit, and say what would cause an account to be closed.

Step 1: What Scene+ is and who it suits

You will learn: who runs the programme, which documents govern a membership, and which reader the terms are built for.

Scene+ is a loyalty rewards program operated by Scene Limited Partnership ("Scene LP"), owned by Scotia Loyalty Ltd., a subsidiary of The Bank of Nova Scotia, Galaxy Entertainment Inc., a subsidiary of Cineplex Entertainment LP, and Empire Company Limited, and Scene LP is solely responsible for conducting and administering it [1].

Eight sets of Additional Terms and Conditions sit alongside the main terms — for Scotiabank Visa Cardmembers, Scotiabank American Express Cardmembers, Scotiabank Debit Cardmembers, Tangerine Mastercard Credit Cardholders, Scene+ Travel, Empire, Home Hardware and Shell — and they hold the card, travel and partner rules; where an Additional Term is inconsistent with the main terms, the Additional Term prevails [1]. A notice at the top of the page states that updates to the Additional Terms and Conditions for Empire and for Shell take effect on November 3, 2026 [1].

Scene LP may amend, restrict or otherwise change the terms, any aspect of the programme and any feature or benefit, including redemption procedures and rewards partners, and, except for Quebec residents, without notice unless the law requires it [1]. It is under no obligation to continue the programme, and it may sell or transfer all or part of it [1]. Continued participation after a change is treated as agreement, and the stated remedy for a member who does not agree is to cancel the account [1]. The online version of the terms is the governing version [1].

These terms set out no status tiers; Scene LP may offer paid premium tiers to members, which would be subject to additional terms and conditions, and joining such tiers is optional [1]. The programme described here is built for residents of Canada who shop at Scene+ partners — the main terms name Participating Empire Locations and Cineplex theatres — or who hold a Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine product [1].

Step 2: Joining and looking after your account

You will learn: who is eligible to enrol, how an account and card are set up, and the housekeeping that keeps them working.

Membership is free, but it is limited to natural persons unless Scene LP expressly permits otherwise: businesses, corporations, sole proprietorships, trusts, partnerships, charities and other entities are not eligible, and only their individual owners may be members [1]. To enrol you must be a resident of Canada with a valid Canadian address and a valid email address, and be 14 years of age or older, enrolling individually at the Program Site, through the Scene+ mobile app or through other available channels [1]. You may have only one open Scene+ Account in your name at any given time, and you must tell Scene LP promptly about any change to your name, mailing address, email address or other enrolment details [1].

Enrolment requires a password that is not easily guessed; anyone who knows your password and account number has full access, so you must not share it, must notify Scene LP immediately if it is lost, stolen or used without authorisation, and Scene LP is not responsible for points redeemed through unauthorised use of your password unless caused by its gross negligence or wilful misconduct [1].

An Unregistered Card can earn and accumulate points on its linked account, but the holder must enrol and register it using the card's PIN to redeem, and points on an unregistered card that is lost or stolen before registration are forfeited [1]. Every Scene+ Scotiabank credit cardmember and Scene+ Tangerine credit cardholder, including supplementary cardholders and authorised users, is enrolled in the programme [1]. Enrolment is subject to verification and is invalid if the information given is not true and complete, in which case points earned may be forfeited [1]. Report a lost or stolen card or account number, or access by someone else, at 1-866-586-2805 [1]. You may cancel at any time by calling the same number, and all points are cancelled immediately on closure [1].

Step 3: How earning works

You will learn: what a transaction has to look like for points to be issued, and where the earning rates actually live.

Points are earned when you present or make available your Scene+ account number, use your membership card, or use a Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine product before a purchase, redemption or other eligible transaction is completed, or when you take up an offer or benefit that earns points [1]. The rates and any additional conditions are not in the main terms: they are set out on the Program Site, in the Scene+ mobile app, or in the terms of the particular offer provided when it is made available [1].

Unless the terms state otherwise, points are not issued for the purchase of products or services by anyone other than the member [1]. Earning at Participating Empire Locations, and through Scene+ Scotiabank and Scene+ Tangerine products, is described in the corresponding Additional Terms and Conditions, and travel purchases made with those payment products are described in the Additional Terms and Conditions for Scene+ Travel [1]. If a purchase is returned or exchanged, the points relating to it are deducted from or returned to your account [1].

Go deeper: Earning rate for what an earn rate is and how programmes publish one.

Step 4: Redeeming points

You will learn: how a redemption is made, what the daily cap is, and what points can and cannot be turned into.

To redeem, you present your membership card or Scene+ account number at the time of the transaction, and your balance is reduced by the number of points required for the redemption level you choose; unredeemed points, plus any points earned in that transaction, stay in the account for later use [1]. At Participating Empire Locations, Cineplex theatres and other retail locations where points can be redeemed, the maximum is $500 per day per member [1]. One of two options applies as applicable, and Scene LP may make others available: points for the entire amount of the redemption transaction, or points plus a charge to a payment product for the balance [1].

Points are redeemed at participating Rewards Partner locations or through special offers and promotions, and at Participating Empire Locations [1]. Points may also be redeemed for prepaid cards and gift cards solely at Scene LP's discretion, and those items are not eligible for returns or refunds of points or for credit to a payment product, with the issuer's own terms applying [1].

Points have no monetary value, cannot be converted to cash and cannot form the basis of a monetary claim against Scene LP, an Owner or a Rewards Partner [1]. They are personal: they cannot be sold, exchanged, given, charged, assigned or traded without Scene LP's prior written consent, transfers between members require both accounts to be in Active Status and Scene LP's permission in its sole discretion, a transfer on the death of a member requires the recipients to be existing members or otherwise eligible to open an account, and pooling requires the accounts to be in the same household, in Active Status and permitted by Scene LP [1].

Go deeper: Transferring Scene+ points to Aeroplan for the programme-to-programme side, and the points value calculator for putting a number on a redemption.

Step 5: Keeping your points and your account

You will learn: the behaviour that protects an account, the deadline for disputing a balance, and when Scene LP can close an account.

Only you should use your Scene+ Account or membership card, except where Scene LP expressly permits otherwise, such as through household pooling; unauthorised reproduction or sharing of a card or account number may lead to a deduction or loss of points, exclusion from the programme, closure of the account and additional legal consequences [1].

If you believe your balance is wrong, contact Scene LP at 1-866-586-2805 within 45 days of the transaction date, supplying any documentation it asks for; after that period the balance is deemed correct, except for excess points improperly applied, and lost or stolen points may not be reinstated [1].

Scene LP may close an account whose card was not used to earn, redeem or complete other reward transaction activity in more than 24 consecutive months, unless you hold a Scene+ Scotiabank or Scene+ Tangerine product that has not been cancelled and whose underlying account remains open with Scotiabank or Tangerine [1]. If the account is closed, you forfeit all points in it, and points earned through a Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine product are not treated as earning on your account unless that product has been linked to it [1]. Written notice is provided before closure where applicable law requires it [1].

Quebec residents have their own section of the terms, applying to residents of Quebec only, which also covers changes: written notice of a change is given 60 to 90 days before it takes effect, and a Quebec resident may refuse it and cancel without cost, penalty or indemnification by written notice no later than 30 days after the effective date, after which the account is closed and the points are forfeited [1]. As printed online, that section's first sentence ends after the cross-reference to "Scene+ Account Closure by Scene LP" without a main clause, and the next sentence begins "Scene+ Points structure …" without a subject or verb, so the online text does not state what happens in that passage [1].

Go deeper: Card points expiry for how loyalty balances lapse and what activity resets the clock.

Step 6: Your first concrete action

You will learn: the five things to do first, all taken from the terms themselves.

  1. Enrol at the Program Site, in the Scene+ app or through another available channel — or register any Unregistered Card using the PIN on it — with your full legal name, mailing address, email and other contact information accurate and complete [1].
  2. Present your Scene+ account number or membership card, or use your Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine product, before every eligible transaction completes [1].
  3. Make sure any Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine product you hold is linked to your Scene+ Account, because earning through it is not treated as earning on your account otherwise [1].
  4. Earn, redeem or complete other reward activity at least once within every 24 consecutive months, or keep an uncancelled Scene+ Scotiabank or Tangerine product with an open underlying account, so the account is not closed for inactivity [1].
  5. Check your balance and raise any error with Scene LP at 1-866-586-2805 within 45 days of the transaction date [1].

Next: go back to the Scene+ programme hub for the guides behind each step, and read the Scene+ Program Terms and Conditions for the current wording.

  • Earning rates, redemption values, partner lists and card rules for any bank or retail partner.
  • Programme-to-programme transfers and how points leave Scene+.
  • Paid premium tiers, which would carry their own additional terms.
