How to understand how transfers affect mileage and points expiry
Transfer-driven expiry is the question of whether moving miles or points into a frequent flyer account — from a bank, a hotel programme, another airline or another member — counts as the activity that keeps a balance alive. In United's MileagePlus programme, accrued miles stay in the account until they are redeemed or forfeited on a defined list of grounds, and mileage moved between MileagePlus accounts runs through a separate Transfer Miles Program with its own conditions. [7]

Key takeaways
- United's MileagePlus rules keep accrued miles in the account until they are redeemed or forfeited under the programme rules, the contract of carriage or fare rules, prohibited conduct, applicable law, member-requested account closure, the member's death, or repeated failure to respond about the account. [7]
- Account inactivity is not on that list, so dormancy on its own is not a forfeiture event under the MileagePlus rules. [7]
- Miles can be moved to another MileagePlus account only through United's Transfer Miles Program, and members must comply with that programme's terms. [7]
- Offers run with partners are governed by the applicable partner's own terms, so the receiving programme's conditions decide how an inbound transfer is treated. [7]
Does an inbound transfer reset mileage expiry?
In MileagePlus, the answer turns less on the transfer itself than on the forfeiture framework that applies to every mile in the account. The rules say mileage accrued in a member's account is maintained there until it is redeemed for an award or otherwise forfeited for one of the listed reasons: a breach of the programme rules, the contract of carriage or fare rules; prohibited conduct; applicable laws or regulations; a member-requested account closure; the death of the member; or the member failing to respond to repeated communications about the account. [7] Account inactivity is not among those grounds. [7]
That matters for anyone planning to rely on a transfer: under these rules a transferred balance joins an account whose miles are not sitting on an inactivity clock, so the transfer changes the size of the balance rather than the rule that governs whether the miles survive. [7] The framework also gives United room to change programme rules, travel awards and special offers at any time and without notice, even where a change affects the value of mileage already accumulated, and members may not rely on the continued availability of a particular award or award level. [7]
What counts as activity in MileagePlus?
Earning. Miles are accrued in an account only when the member uses a recognised means of accrual, generally through their own use of the service, except where miles are earned on authorised debit or credit card purchases or as expressly allowed under an offer. [7] Except where United expressly permits otherwise, mileage accrues only after the member's official enrolment date and can be applied only to that member's own account. [7]
Moving a balance. Accrued mileage may be transferred to another MileagePlus account through United's Transfer Miles Program, subject to the Transfer Miles Program Terms and Conditions. [7] Outside that route and other programmes United authorises or sponsors, mileage, certificates, PlusPoints, premier qualifying credits, account numbers, status and awards cannot be transferred or assigned except as expressly permitted by United in writing. [7] Selling, bartering or otherwise transferring miles outside authorised channels is expressly prohibited and can lead to termination of membership and removal or cancellation of accrued mileage. [7]
Repairing a gap. Where a member believes credit was earned but not posted, United may require proof such as ticket copies or receipts, and claims must reach United within twelve months of the date the credit was claimed to be earned, though some partners set different retro-credit windows. [7] The wider set of earning routes that count towards keeping a balance usable is set out in the points expiration activity checklist.
Why the receiving programme's terms decide
Most transfers that readers care about cross programme boundaries: a bank or hotel currency converting into airline miles, or miles leaving one airline for another. MileagePlus's rules state that partner offers are governed by the terms and conditions set out by the applicable partner. [7] That makes the receiving programme's own expiry and activity definitions the deciding text, not the rules of the programme the miles came from. [7] Which partners run conversions at all, and under what conditions, is covered in the transfer partner master directory.
A second kind of inbound movement is a refund rather than a transfer: when an award is redeemed and later cancelled or returned in line with the applicable rules, the miles taken are redeposited to the member's account subject to a service charge, and some awards state that miles are not eligible for redeposit. [7] Before treating any transfer as the activity that protects a balance, check the current terms of the programme receiving the miles, since those terms control the point at which a balance expires. [7]
Exceptions and limits
- Closing the account. Member-requested account closure is itself one of the listed grounds on which miles can be forfeited. [7]
- Death or divorce. In the event of a member's death or divorce, United may, at its sole discretion, credit all or part of the accrued mileage to authorised persons once it receives satisfactory documentation and payment of applicable fees. [7]
- Audits and investigations. Where United suspects prohibited conduct it may delay or suspend all activity in an account; while suspended, the member may keep accruing miles and premier qualifying credits, but no redemptions or other transactions are permitted and outstanding redemptions may be cancelled or suspended. [7]
- Terminated accounts. Members whose accounts are terminated are not eligible to take part in any aspect of the programme and cannot enrol again without United's express consent. [7]
- Flights that do not earn. Neither mileage credit nor premier qualifying credits are awarded for flight cancellations, and award miles are not credited for award travel, including tickets paid with a combination of miles and money. [7]
- What miles are not. Awards, benefits and accrued mileage do not constitute property of the member and are not transferable except as the rules allow. [7] The base definition of expiry is set out in the glossary.
Frequently asked questions
Does transferring miles into my account reset the expiry date?
It depends on the programme receiving the miles, because partner offers are governed by the applicable partner's own terms. [7] In MileagePlus, accrued miles are maintained until redeemed or forfeited on the listed grounds, which do not include inactivity. [7]
Are transferred miles treated differently from miles I earn by flying?
United's rules apply a single set of forfeiture grounds to mileage accrued in the account, and they route transfers between MileagePlus accounts through the separate Transfer Miles Program terms. [7]
Can I move miles to another person's MileagePlus account?
Accrued mileage may be transferred to another MileagePlus account through United's Transfer Miles Program, and members must comply with that programme's terms and conditions. [7] Selling or bartering miles outside authorised channels is prohibited. [7]
Do miles come back if I cancel an award ticket?
Where an award is redeemed and later cancelled or returned under the applicable rules, the miles taken are redeposited to the account subject to a service charge, unless the award states that redeposit is not available. [7]
