How to choose Trenitalia fare types

Trenitalia fare types are the ticket names the operator groups under its prices heading: Base, Economy and Super Economy, listed together with a separate refund option called tiRimborso (Ticket refund). [2] [3] Around those names Trenitalia keeps a second layer of family, group, senior and round-trip offers, some of which are quoted as a percentage off the Base price or the Base offer. [2] [3] [4]

Key takeaways

  • Trenitalia groups Base ticket, Economy ticket, Super Economy ticket and tiRimborso (Ticket refund) under one prices heading, with an All fares entry beneath them. [2] [3]
  • The Italian-language price list repeats the same three names and adds a discount voucher, a young people's discount and the tiRimborso option. [4]
  • Child and youth reductions on national trains are expressed against the Base offer, while some promotions quote their saving against the Base price. [2] [3]
  • CartaFreccia is the loyalty programme whose pages cover earning points on the Frecce and status tiers, and X-GO is described as the programme for Regionale and Intercity journeys. [2] [3] [4]

Which Trenitalia fare types are listed?

The English site keeps Base ticket, Economy ticket, Super Economy ticket and tiRimborso (Ticket refund) together under a single Our prices heading, with All fares as the wider entry underneath. [2] [3] The Italian page presents the same three names in its fare list and adds a discount voucher, a young people's discount and Opzione tiRimborso, the refund option. [4]

The fare names sit next to the train categories rather than inside them: Trenitalia's connections menu names Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity, Intercity Notte and Regionale, each with its own service pages. [2] [3] The operator also links a Terms of use of fares section and a Conditions of Transport section from its Information menu, which is where its fare conditions are published. [2] [3]

Which family, group and senior offers sit beside the fares?

Family, group, senior and round-trip offers are listed in their own blocks, separate from the three fare names. [2] [3]

Two round-trip offers, a same-day return and a weekend return, are grouped separately again. [2] [3] Where a discount voucher is used on a return journey, the Italian site says the voucher is applied automatically to the return leg as well. [4]

Do children pay less on national trains?

On national trains, children from birth up to but not including 4 travel free without a seat of their own, or at a 50% discount when a seat is booked for them. [2] [3] Children from 4 up to but not including 15 receive 50% off the Base offer. [2] [3] The Bimbi gratis promotion is more generous on Intercity trains, where every child under 15 travels free and accompanying adults take 40% off the Base price. [3]

Regional trains run on different age bands, and the reduction for children from 4 up to but not including 12 does not apply in every region. [2] [3]

How does CartaFreccia earning fit with the fare you buy?

CartaFreccia is the programme Trenitalia describes as intended for customers travelling at high speed, and its section of the site covers the programme, earning points on the Frecce, spending points, status tiers and a set of frequently asked questions. [2] [3] [4] A second programme, X-GO, is described as the programme for Regionale and Intercity journeys, with its own pages for earning and spending points. [4] Our CartaFreccia guide covers the programme itself.

Membership also shapes one of the offers sold next to the three fares: FrecciaSENIOR is presented as a CartaFreccia benefit for travellers over 60 on the Frecce, with prices starting at €29. [4] Tickets themselves are sold through the Trenitalia app, ticketless codes, Postoclick and travel agencies in Italy and abroad. [2] [3]

Exceptions and limits

  • Regional travel sits apart. Trenitalia publishes regional offers, a Digital Regional Ticket, regional online tickets and passes, and a regional ticket bought with Tap&Tap under a separate Regional heading. [2] [3] [4] The 50% child reduction on regional trains does not apply in Campania, Abruzzo, Sardinia or Puglia, or in the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano. [2] [3]
  • Regional variations. Campania makes children under 6 free and charges full price above that age; Lombardy gives the 50% reduction from 4 up to 14; Puglia allows free travel under 10; and Trento accepts up to 5 children under 6 per accompanying adult. [2] [3]
  • Airport and urban fares. On the Lazio–Fiumicino airport fare, children from 4 up to 12 travel free, one per paying adult, while on the Sicily–Palermo airport fare that age band pays €3 (Series B) or a €1.50 supplement (Series C). [2] [3] In Bari, Rome, Venice, Palermo and Turin the youth reduction does not apply where the Fare 14 urban fare is in force. [2] [3]
  • International trains. Eurocity, Euronight and Iryo services carry their own child conditions: on Eurocity, children aged 0–5 travel free without a seat, and older children use a CHILD offer of roughly 50% off the adult fare. [2] [3]
  • Return journeys. The same-day return and weekend return offers are separate products from the three fares, and a discount voucher used on a return is applied to both legs. [2] [3] [4]
