FREQUENT FLYER GLOSSARY
What is a baggage on-time guarantee?
Baggage on-time guarantees are commitments that an airline publishes in its own conditions of carriage, promising a stated consequence when a checked bag is delivered to the arrivals area later than a stated time. The definition is the airline's to write: the deadline, the consequence and the conditions come from the operating carrier's own text.

Key takeaways
- A baggage on-time guarantee is an airline's own published promise about checked-bag delivery, with a stated consequence if the bag arrives late.
- Delta's SkyMiles Program Rules list checked baggage fees among the ancillary purchases and fees that earn no miles or Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs), and state that eCredits are not accepted as payment for them [4].
- Tickets bought to carry excess baggage, or to provide extra space for the primary passenger, do not earn SkyMiles mileage credit [4].
- The SkyMiles overview and the Medallion Status Match Challenge page present waived baggage fees and a free first checked bag as Medallion status benefits [5] [6].
What does a baggage on-time guarantee actually promise?
The term describes a promise with three parts: a starting moment, a delivery deadline, and a consequence. Because the promise is written by the airline, the carrier decides which airports and flights it covers, how delivery time is recorded, and what is paid.
Delta's SkyMiles Program Rules set out how the programme treats checked bags. Checked baggage fees appear in the list of ancillary purchases and fees that do not count toward earning miles or Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) [4]. eCredits are valid only for payment of tickets and government-imposed taxes and fees, and are not accepted as a form of payment for other types of fees, such as checked baggage and change fees [4]. Tickets purchased to carry excess baggage, such as musical instruments and pets, or to provide extra space for the primary passenger, are on the list of items for which SkyMiles mileage credit is not given [4].
On the benefit side, the SkyMiles overview lists a free first checked bag for the member and companions among the benefits of Medallion Status [5], and the Medallion Status Match Challenge page lists "Waived Baggage Fees" among the Medallion benefits it sets out [6]. The Status Match Challenge page adds that the offer is subject to change without notice and that it was last updated on 1 January 2026 [6].
How do you claim a baggage on-time guarantee?
The rules that apply to a checked bag in the SkyMiles programme are set out in the Program Rules, which cover earning and the forms of payment accepted for bag fees [4].
- Checked baggage fees earn nothing. Checked baggage fees are named in the Program Rules among the fees that do not count toward miles or MQDs [4].
- eCredits will not pay them. eCredits are valid for tickets and government-imposed taxes and fees, and are not accepted as payment for other fees such as checked baggage fees [4].
- Excess baggage tickets earn nothing. Tickets purchased to carry excess baggage, or to provide extra space for the primary passenger, are on the list of items for which SkyMiles mileage credit is not given [4].
- Free bags come with status. A free first checked bag for the member and companions is listed as a Medallion benefit in the SkyMiles overview [5], and waived baggage fees appear in the benefit list on the Status Match Challenge page [6].
- Paperwork for a late bag. See the delayed and damaged baggage claim checklist.
Exceptions and limits
- Checked bags under the SkyMiles Program Rules. The Program Rules govern membership, earning and redemption; on bags they exclude checked baggage fees from earning and bar eCredits as payment for them [4].
- Status benefits are fee waivers. The free first checked bag and the waived baggage fees described on the programme pages are benefits of Medallion status [5] [6].
- Terms change. Delta reserves the sole right to interpret and apply the Membership Guide and Program Rules and invites members to check back for updates and rule changes [4]; the Status Match Challenge terms state that the offer is subject to change without notice [6].
